Title: Mary Ann Amelia CRUSE or DUCK or CARTER or FURZE?
Post by: manukarik on Friday 01 January 21 12:01 GMT (UK)
In my family tree, I have Mary Ann Amelia CRUSE (widow, born about 1828 and died 27 May 1889 in Plumstead, Kent) marrying James John DUCK on 4 June 1854 in Bethnal Green. Her father is given as William CARTER (Coachman). Yet almost all the sources, I can find (including others' family trees) suggest that her father was Thomas FURZE (born about 1793 in Carrington, Somerset and died about 1870 in Richmond, Surrey and married to Elizabeth HOLLOWAY). Mary Ann Amelia had a son Edward Thomas CRUSE, who was one of the executors of her Will.

She possibly married Thomas CRUSE in Shoreditch in 1845. He died in 1854, which is when she married James John DUCK. Her father on the marriage entry is given as John Goode FURZE.

I'm going round in circles!

Does anyone have any advice on how to get to the bottom of who Mary Ann Amelia's parents actually were or have her in their family tree?

Ignore the trees, and work from the records.
A tree is never a source, It's a hint, and not necessarily an ounce of sense to it.

"Mary Ann Amelia had a son Edward Thomas CRUSE, who was one of the executors of her Will."
Ok, so when/where was he born, and what was his MMN?

Thanks, Pauline! What you say makes a great deal of sense. Thank you!

I've asked for a copy of M A A Duck's Will to see if that gives me any pointers.

I hope 2021 is kind to you and yours!

Hmmm looks a little funny as some of the records do say William Carter !

Have a look at Mary Ann Amelia Furxe
1827 - 1889 MML1-VD5 on LDS family search see what they are thinking, may or may not help.

Mary Ann Amelia FURZES born 19 Aug 1827 and baptised 3 Feb 1828 at St Pancras.  Illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth of Battle Bridge.  The surname HAWKINS was originally written then crosssed out and FURZES written above,

On the same day, James son of James (dead) and Elizabeth FURZES.  Father a Smith, abode Battle Bridge.  The child was said to be born 26 Nov 1822.

That is wrong.  The daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth of Richmond was born 28 May 1826, abode George Street, and was buried on 22 May 1827, infant, abode George Street.

Thanks Debra, much appreciated!

I saw a reference card showing illeg. against the birth. Where did you find the info? I've been scratching my head over this for a while. Hopefully getting closer now! I believe Battle Bridge is now known as Kings Cross.

Thanks Chris! I'd looked at that and thought it was her, but there was a lot that didn't add up.

Debra thanks for clarifying the infant death.
