Title: help 'translating' a census
Post by: lizzielawton13 on Tuesday 29 December 20 16:44 GMT (UK)
hello all, I am looking at an ancestors census return for 1851, and it seems v confusing.

Im looking at the census for 1851 for william stevens and his family at the Hurst, dudley woodside. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/8860/images/STSHO107_2032_2033-0547?pId=8798327 There seems to be two children listed as his, but born 2 months apart, and two women one is wife the other ? Any suggestions as to what the census taker was trying to record?

Rhona is the wife, and Ann is the widow.

Patience has mother's maiden name of Bayley.  I can't readily find Mary Anne.

I think that William's wife is actually Rhoda - marriage 1851 March quarter - William Stevens and Rhoda Westwood appear on the same page.

Ann Stevens widow remarried 1853 Joseph Bissell 1810 in Sedgley, Stafford, his father's name Benjamin her father Robert Skelden.

I havent found a marriage between Ann Skelden and a Stevens in Dudley.

1861 census they are living in Dudley and Mary Ann Stevens is with them
