Title: Boath family, Arbroath
Post by: peedielass on Sunday 27 December 20 15:47 GMT (UK)
Hoping that someone out there can help. I am researching my husband's family and have David Boath born 1875 (illegitimate) at 11 Applegate, Arbroath to Margaret Boath. I can't find either of them in 1881 or 1891 census but do have David in 1901 when he is married to Annie Cowe at Monikie. They married in 1897. His mother Margaret however is elusive. I have her death reg from SP - she died in 1933 age 94, father's name John Boath and mother's name only given as ? Carr.

I'd like to confirm Margaret Boath's parents and also find out if she had any siblings.

Hi peedielass

Who reported Margaret's death in 1933? Did she show as single or married?

Keep in mind that sometimes mistakes were made with parents' names of the deceased. It may be that father was not John and you have a question mark on the name of David's mother for now I would suggest.

Did David marry under the surname of Boath and used it all his life? Just thinking he might have used the surname of his reputed father in the early censuses and this would explain why he is hard to find.

The most obvious possible entry for Margaret using the info you have and assuming she had family roots to Arbroath is one family headed up by David Boath and wife Jean (maiden name possibly Lowe) and family, including a 1 yr old Margaret in 1841.

Was there any occupation given on the death reg for Margaret's father?

Working around Margaret being born c. 1840 in Angus, there is this possible 1871 census entry:

Margret Boath 30 flax dresser b. Arbroath
Maria Connoly 37 boarder b. Dunfermline, fifeshire
Isabella Boath 30 boarder flax dresser b. Arbroath
Georgana Christer 7 boarder b. Arbroath

Address: Lawton Mill Private House, Inverkeillor Angus

Although showing as a boarder in the household, 7 yr old Georgina looks to be daughter of Margaret, see FX index entry www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY5J-JZR (original image on SP).

There is also a Margaret Booth, aged 18 and born in Arbroath on the 1861 census in Inverkeillor. She is showing as a servant and millworker at 4 Boysack Mills Bothy.

There is a John Boath and wife Janet Fyfe in the Angus area who had a daughter Margaret c. 1844 www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Boath-Descendants-27 I think this might be too late a birth. David's mother Margaret showed on her death as 94 yrs old in 1933. This would mean an approx. birth year of c. 1839 or so.

ADDED: Certainly not this Margaret. She died in 1874 www.findagrave.com/memorial/126350520/margaret-j-boath

The 1901 entry you have with mother Margaret in the household:

David Boath 25 milk salesman b. Arbroath
Annie Boath 26
Davitt Boath 4
William Boath 1
Margaret Boath 55 mother jute spinner b. artwath, Forfarshire...have you seen the original to confirm place name. Is it Arbroath? I have taken this entry from one of the transcripts.

Address: Saddlestone, Monikie Angus

Have you ruled out the family with a Margaret as head, at 49, Larch Street in 1881? The David in same is noted as born Dundee, but some other siblings are noted as born Arbroath.

Not made headway with confirmation of Margaret's origins and parents but...we have half siblings for David I think. Quite a few  ::)

I mentioned above in the 1871 census entry that the Margaret we were looking at seemed to have a daughter Georgina b. 1864 in Abroath. There were more children showing for her I think. From Family Search and its index:

1861 Isabella www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY5J-HJL
1864 Georgina from before www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY5J-JZR
1866 Ann www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY5V-PBG
1869 Alexander www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY1D-DPT
1871 James www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY1D-SLB

So, 1871 we had above with only daughter Georgina in the household (where were the others? Last one James still to be born after the census).

Have found them now all together including David for 1881 on SP/LDS census:

Margret Boath 49, head, unmarried, Low Mill Hand, b. Arbroath
Georgina Boath 17 jute spinner b. Arbroath
Alexander Boath 13 half timer b. Arbroath
James Boath 11 half timer b. Arbroath
David Boath 6 b Dundee
Duncan Boath 3 b. Dundee

Addres: 49 Larch St, Liff & Benvie, Forfar

There are some errors along the way such as ages and birth place for David, but do think it is likely him with mother and half siblings.

Hi Scotmum  :)

Just came across the entry you have found. Ancestry did not have anything at all but found them on SP for 1881. Added: Nope, A/try do have them under BOUTH and BOATH in the household. I just couldn't find them!

As mentioned earlier, I would consider that Margaret's parents may not be as showing on her death reg  :-\

This is the family I saw in Arbroath that I thought might be Margaret's:

1851 (can't see it on FreeCen)

Jean Boath 45 Pauper Yarn Winder b. Mains, Aberdeenshire
Mary Ann Boath 19
James Boath 16
Jean Boath 14
Isobel Boath 12
Margaret Borth 10
George Boath 8
