HI
I'm looking for Cornelius Coffee but have no idea which part of Ireland he may have lived in. I would also like to find his son, Michael's, birth record and any other family.
Cornelius's son, Michael Coffee (born approx 1842) left Ireland to work at the Tredegar Ironworks in Sirhowy, near Tredegar, South Wales. In December 1866 Michael married Honora Murphy in the Catholic church at Dukestown. His father was Cornelius Coffee, deceased, a Husbandman. Honora's father was Thomas Murphy, also a deceased Husbandman.
Thomas died in Wales after the 1851 census but before 1866.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Susan

The name Coffee is often spelt Coffey.

On this site
https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/
there are several Michael Coffee/y Cornelius combinations.
Do you happen to know what Michael Coffee's Mother's name was? It should be on the marriage certificate.
it is also useful to note the names of the children of Michael & Honora Coffee as often, they would still be influenced by Irish naming patterns and if you know the children you can often work back to find the most likely father/mother combo.

As there are significant numbers of Coffee/Coffey in Co Kerry and Cork & Ross it would probably be a good idea for you to have a look on this site yourself. Happy to look if you are able to provide the names of the children (Michael & Honora) and the name of Michael Coffee's mother.

Mother’s names are not shown on civil certificates. It is often shown on parish records though.

Thank you all for your replies.
I don't know Michael's mother's name, but his childrens' names were Mary, Thomas, Margaret, Joseph and John. They were all born in Tredegar.
One of the witnesses to his marriage was a Daniel Crowley. According to the census in 1861 and 1871 a Daniel Crowley from Cork, Ireland was living in Tredegar. This would suggest that Michael could be from Cork.

Or Daniel Crowley may just have been from Ireland and a fellow countryman.
or may have been a relation?

On the site i mentioned before I have found a marriage on 10/5/1831 between Cornelius Coffee and Mary Crowley at RC Church at CARRIGALINE & TEMPLEBRIGID Co Cork.
The witnesses were John Murphy (for husband) and Margaret Crowley (for wife)
Then children 18/4//1832 Cornelius (sponsors John Crowley and Ellen Collins) and Norry 12/2/1834 (sponsors Michael Crowley and Mary Gerald) both baptised at Tracton Abbey and Ellen Coffee 5/10/1842 also at Tracton Abbey. The sponsors were John (Johannes) and Mary Foot.
There was another Cornelius Coffee and Mary (Holland) with family being born at that time John Coffee 7/11/1841 and
Michael 3/7/1844 and baptised at Tracton Abbey
NB the 1871 Census has Michael Coffee (with Honorah) born about 1845 so this birth could possibly fit.

What are the ages of Michael Coffee and Daniel Crowley in the various censuses you have seen. When did Michael Coffee die?
-
Thank you Shanreagh. Interesting information about Cornelius and Mary Crowley.
In the 1871 census Michael's age was recorded as 26. I haven't been able to find a census for Michael for 1861 so assume he was still in Ireland then.
In the 1861 census Daniel Crowley was 29, wife Mary 27, son Charles 10, daughter Honora 7.
In 1871 his age was recorded as 50. Mary was 40, Charles 17. Norah (Honora) 15 and they had Elizabeth 9, Daniel 7, John 5 and Bridget 3. They were living at the same address in both censuses.
In 1881 Daniel Crowley was 52, Mary 57, Elizabeth 18, Daniel 17, John 14, Bridget 13. They have moved to a different address.
Michael died tragically in August 1876 at the age of 34. His body was pulled from the Monmouthshire Canal in the parish of Llanocchora (Cwmbran). According to his death certificate there was an inquest (8 & 12 August) but Gwent Archives say there is no record of it and there doesn't appear to be a report in the local newspapers.

There is this entry in 1861 4003/9/21
Transcribed as
Michel Coffer 21 yrs b Ireland (looks like Coffee)
He is boarding at no. 6, Row 21 Bedwellty
The householder is transcribed as John ‘Dynaho’ .
I wonder if that could be Dennahy or similar.

Thanks. This definitely looks like it could be Michael.
