Hello does anyone have access to old copies of the Deal local paper "The East Kent Mercury"? I'm trying to find a photo I've lost which was of a lady named Leslie.... who was a beauty queen in the early 1970s or late 1960s.
The photo was head and shoulders and she was wearing a coat with a fur collar.
Rather vague I'm afraid, but a lost love who I would dearly like to have the photo of again.
I know she went on to marry and her surname became "Preece".

Leslie is usually the male version of the name.
You will find the female version is spelt Lesley.
:D
-
If she married in Kent - only one marriage to that surname and that was 1984 which suggests she was either an older bride or it's the wrong marriage.

You could send a message via the contact us on this website. I know the compilers are very active in their local groups so May know someone who is prepared to look, or even knows to whom you refer.

The electoral roll still has a couple with those names in Deal, so the link suggested by McKha seems like a good idea.
Or is it just the picture you're after, not contact?

There is an article with a picture in this paper - Kent & Sussex Courier 15 September 1961 page 12.
This Lesley was chosen as a Beauty Queen by stock car racers.
Whether it is the one you are looking for.........?

Many thanks everyone. I hadn't realised that the name spelling could be wrong.
I don't think the marriage is the right one.
Does anyone know how I can look at the photo in the Kent & Sussex Courier?
I will also try the link suggested by Mckha489.
The only other information I have is that her father was a customs officer, she did spend some time in Venezuela before 1985 and that she had a son who was probably born in the mid 1970s.

The girl in the photo that GG has found came from Hill Farm, Broad Oak - a 50 acre farm which she looked after when her parents were away. She worked for Collins & Gray in Uckfield

Hello rosie99. A shame but it's not the right girl.
I'm wondering if there's anyone who has access the the Mercury archive or if past copies are held in Deal library?
Unfortunately I'm not able to come down to Deal to go to the library.

Some of the years are available on British Newspaper online.

Thanks. I'll try it.

This from East kent History . org .UK
The East Kent Mercury was established in 1865 and complete microfilm copy exists currently in Sandwich Library but returning to Deal Library in January 2011. It has always been a weekly edition.

Years ago a friend of the family used to post the East Kent Mercury to my father after they had read it. It used to arrive each week folded up with string holding it together ;D.
I must look at that link, thanks Carol.
