Title: John Edward Boshell
Post by: kooky on Sunday 13 December 20 10:29 GMT (UK)
Have my gt gr father John Edward Boshell in Ancestry Thru lines. B about 1841.

Also have his father my 2x gt gr father, same name.
However there is no mention of my 2x gt gr mother.
All born Dublin
Any ideas on finding the first John's mother and the older John's wife?

Kooky -- may I ask the name of the ancestor who led you back to John Edward Boshell please?

I am asking simply because there was a John Boshill from Blanchardstown, Dublin, baptised on 13 May 1841 -- but his father was James and mother was Mary Mills.

Carole, yes Susan Dowzard married John E Boshell.
They were my gt gr parents. Their daughter Annie was my grandmother.
She married Robert Henry Kane in 1907.
They had my father Herbert Boshell Kane in 1910.
They are found on the 1911 census in Bray.

Pennines, My explanation as above!

OK -- thank you Kooky.

I'm having no success at the moment finding his baptism. Don't worry though - whenever I say that, a hawkeye Rootschatter normally finds something!

If it helps, my Boshell ancestors were usually not Roman Catholic!

This isn't a baptism -- but MAY be the parents' marriage - however it is RC.

A John Boshell married a Margaret Fogarty at St Pauls Arran Quay, Dublin on 30 Nov 1843 -no parents names but witnesses Thomas Smyth and Anna Bond.

In addition there is a register of marriages (alphabetical order) on Ancestry which I have never seen before - showing a list from St Paul's from 1837 to 1857. Included in this list are both a John Bushell and a Christopher Bushell. (I just wondered if he might be a brother -- OR a red herring!)

There is only a reference number against their names and this shows 2203 for John Bushell.

Ah, now we all have it!
It is quite an interesting picture.

Not to be taken too seriously, honestly ;D but we are desperate, I just mention a plain Mary Boshell, widow, who married James Kelly, at St Thomas Dublin in 1850 (same church as JE married Susan in 1874)

I may have gone down a blind alley?

Well done JonW on all you have found. So he was definitely born in 1841.

In case he wasn't born in Ireland, I have checked the British Army births, England and Wales Civil Reg - and Scotland Parish Registers. Sadly no trace of John Edward in any of those.

Irish research can be so frustrating I'm afraid.

While there is no entry for  a Kelly at 96 North Strand for 1877 in The Irish Times ,I notice that some years later lodgings were offered there. This could have been caused by the international economic recession of the mid 1870s.
Perhaps of greater interest to you is an entry in The Calendar of Ancient Records of Dublin Vol.14 Page 76 where a John Boshell made an unsuccessful bid for the letting of tolls and customs for 1 year from Michaelmas 1788.

Thanks Pennines.
Not looking so good for the Kelly - Boshell marriage, if James the father of the Kelly girls was a clerk, he would have had to have been able to write!

Any more contributions?

Susan’s death in 1882 perhaps?

Thanks, heywood.
Susan died at 6 Charlemont Parade
I wonder who the informant was? Mary Jane Kelly of the same address!
I thought she was supposed to have married William Gerald Milligan in 1876!

To clarify.
The death of Edward aged 22. He was John and Susan's son.
I have no idea if the family lived at Cork St. with the Dowzards.

Edward Boshell died in the workhouse, 22 August 1897. From 28 Cork Street.
Link to cert on an old thread, "Elizabeth Maud Boshell b. 1880"
Thom's 1897 Dublin street directory has a Mrs. Dowzard listed at 28 Cork Street.
Elizabeth Dowzard is there in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Merchants_Quay/Cork_Street/1298328/

Edward Dowzard junior gave it as his address on marriage in 1888.
https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/display-pdf.jsp?pdfName=d-117-3-7-047

Edward Boshell's workhouse admission on 14 August 1897 (there may be an earlier one). He is number 2225. Labourer.

Yes! Thank you all for your interest!
Susan Boshell nee Dowzard, died shortly after the birth of daughter Susan in 1882.
Edward Dowzard, her father, died in 1889.
I have been busy with a family tree for a friend. I think I need to get back to my own family ::)
