Welcome to Rootschat.
We have a Wellington member who probably will be able to help you with Wellington requests.
Likewise I offer to do Auckland lookups when there, undertaking my own research.
Archway must be down for maintenance as I'm unable to check out your requests at this time, but will try again in the morning.
I plan on being back before Christmas, but last time I offered, it was several months before I finally got back.
Do you have kinship with the Waikato HOPA'S at Tauhei? If so I can arrange an introduction.
Alan.
PS Can now get in. Will add R25285554, R25285517 & R25285555, into my little black book.

Hi Puha_Muncher and welcome,
Have you looked on this website?
https://www.maorilandonline.govt.nz/gis/home.htm
There are Hopa families in HB & Gisborne.
Also some of the CT names 'seem' to be listed surname then first name while others may be first name then surname.
Do you think Hopa may have been a transliteration of Hope and therefore could be either first name or surname.

I am sure you will have seen Papers Past or will have it on your list to look at......
Obituary of Job Toamia from Northland born 105 years back from 1929.

So Job is a biblical name and perhaps Hopa may have been too?

Hopa was translated to Job (biblical), and Toamia translated to Thomas.
Thanks for link, will check them out.

Ngā mihi Shanreagh for all the links.
I did find that paper past articles, but hadn;t searched wider under toamia. Thank you!!!
I always thought the death notice was odd, as it is from the March 2 1929 edition, whereas he is said to have passed away in early 1928 (as per his head stone)

Hello again.
Maori land court and other civil records are usually indexed either way, [Christian/Given & Family Surnames] as in the early years there were no standard naming patterns. If you are lucky aka's will also be included.
Around the time of legislation making it compulsory for Maori to register their civil records, it was not uncommon for siblings to go forth with different registered surnames.
Alan.

Hi Puha_Muncher,
I see that two of the five files you requested are held at Archives NZ's Auckland office.
https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=18421941

I will get the three files held in Wellington for you.
Fresh Fields might be able to get the others for you. ;)

Toamia is Thomas......of course. Dredges up an ancient memory of my aunt calling my cousin Tommy, Toamia.
Thanks and you have another name to look for your ancestor under.
The surname Job is listed on the Maori Landonline site.

#1 & # 2 OOPS in my late night hurry to check out the references I did not spot that the last after thought request, was a Wellington one, so was in error when I added it to my list. Would have been another miss-fire, waiting for me at Wellington, while I was expecting it to be at Auckland waiting for me.
Have not managed to get up this week but I am hoping to next week.

Seasons greetings.
I to have visited the archives and will require an address for service once I return home. I have photographed a large sensitive file for you, but the photos will first require some editing upon my return home. Involves a leased parcel of land that was originally set aside for a school. One very detailed statement sets out relationships, occupation, and where domiciled/farming & income at time of writing.

P_M this is so exciting........(I guess only a genealogist would say this!) hopefully you may be able to come back and report some progress/conclusions being made in your search. :)

Ho Ho Ho !!
Seasons Greetings.
Getting late again, and I'm making mistakes. 62 photo's from the two files in the Auckland Archives branch have been forwarded.
Possibly third time I will get it right. The three page declaration by Nicholas SIEMENOFF re Toamia HOPA; and Federick HOLDER, the leasee, and then purchaser of the block of land in question; is, in my opinion, a genealogists gem.
Nine parties are mentioned with a brief current time (18/10/1917) bio on each.
Enjoy.
