I appreciate this isn't the ideal time to be requesting look ups but in case anyone has access to anything that might help please...........
David Forsythe married Mary Ann Magnay on 23 July 1870 at St.James Church, Carlisle and I am desperate to know who the father of David was. I've found the father of Mary Ann from a newspaper but unfortunately it didn't give the father of David.
Many thanks.

Thank you but I have all the above details. The problem is that there were two David Forsythe's and I think the Ancestry trees have got confused. There is a David born 1848 in Ireland and a David born 1848 in Carlisle bith living in Carlisle at the same time, I know the Ancestry trees show the details of the one born in Carlisle but he went to America so the trees are incorrect somewhere along the line. The trees have the 1870 marriage as a David Forsythe marrying a Mary Ann Magnay but I need to know who the father of David was on this marriage to know which David it was. I know I can send for a marriage cert but it will take forever!

The David who married Mary Ann Magnay is on the 1881 census b Carlisle & you can easily check details by using GRO online to check for Forsyth births with mmn Magnay then compare with 1881 entry.
All following b Carlisle mmn Magnay as per https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
Ellen b 1873
William 1875
Sarah Jane 1877
Joseph 1879
1881 entry from Family Search

From the info above & on other replies you have your answer - his parents were David Rankin Forsyth & Mary Morrison
The David Forsyth b Ireland only appears on the 1861 census - parents William & Ellen. Can't find him on later censuses
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7LK-8TP
His parents William & Ellen are still in Cumberland in 1871

Yes I have all that too.I still suspect that the David on the census returns is actually the one born in Ireland though, he came to England as a very small child so may not have known that he was born in Ireland. The Ancestry trees all follow the Carlisle born David through till his death but this is incorrect as the Carlisle born David, the son of David Rankin Forsythe actually went to America and died there which leads me to believe that the one on the census is actually the Irish one, son of William and Ellen.I am going to have to send for the marriage certificate I think, I just had the hope that someone on here might just have had a faster solution. Thanks anyway.

If you are so certain that the David b Carlisle went to America - do you have him on censuses there confirming his birthplace was England?
The David born Ireland is not found after 1861 so I think it’s more likely he is the one who went to America.

Yes I think you need the M/C.
But you may be right.

Mary Forsyth 50 Scotland
James Forsyth 28 England
Robert Forsyth 26 England

The details for the David Forsythe 1848-1933 on Find a Grave clearly state that he is the son of David Rankin Forsythe and so not the David born in Ireland whose father was William, therefore the one who is in Carlisle all his life seems likely to be the David who was born in Ireland and the marriage certificate would clarify this. I just hoped that someone might just have had some paper records for St.James Church in Carlisle that would have given a quick answer.
I think the replies that have come in today from Sandra and trish1120 confirm my theory but I'll send for the marriage cert just to make sure. Many thanks indeed for all the information.
-
To be totally sure I would invest in the M/C but I am pretty sure you are right that his parents were William/Ellen.
Please let us know the outcome :)
-
I will but it will probably be months before the marriage cert arrives, such a pity they can't be downloaded.
-
Just to put an end to the saga.....the marriage certificate arrived yesterday and showed that David's father was indeed William Forsyth and not David Rankin Forsyth so all the Ancestry trres are incorrect. It just shows how careful you have to be when using other peoples 'research'.
Have a lovely Christmas everyone and thank you for all your help.
