I am looking for any background information for Samuel Martin living on Lot 2, Concession 4E (1861) and Lot 3, Concession 4E (1878) in North York (Wexford/Scarborough). He was born March 24, 1830 in Ontario. I do not know the name of his parents at this time. ??? He married Elizabeth Reid (born in 1832 in Ireland) sometime prior to 1857. I do not know the name of her parents or when she emigrated. ???. I would be interested if there are any land records for him. Samuel died in 1906. I do not know when his wife, Elizabeth died ??? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Thank you so much for the information you have given me. :)I tend to agree with you that this Samuel Reid and wife, Sarah, might be the parents of Elizabeth Reid. Is there a 1851 census for this family in which a John or Rachel are mentioned in the household as other children? Are there any documents that give the name of Samuel Reid's parents?

I didn't look any further, it was late here. But since you mentioned a John and Rachel, I had found this record but didn't post it because it was not Samuel and Elizabeth:
Marriage
[Samu]el Martin, bachelor, 20, of York
Rachel Reid, spinster, 21, of Toronto
January 14, 1850
by license
witnesses: John Reid, Elizabeth Reid
married by John Barclay AM, minister of St Andrew's Church, Toronto
-----------
ancestry transcribed the groom's given name as Samuel. the page is burned or worn. I can see the "el" of the name.

If I get a chance I will go back and look in 1851 for Reid and Martin. I doubt you will find Samuel Reid's parents in the Canadian records, since they must have married in Ireland. - Unless they lived long enough to get a full death record. I don't know when that started in Canada.

The censuses are free at
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx
by the way. They are not just on paid sites. They might be at familysearch also, I forget.

edit to add: Now that I look at that record again, the witness Elizabeth could be the woman who married her own Samuel Martin by 1857, then died in 1913.
But were there more than one Martin and Reid family in the area? I would guess there were, but I don't know.
-
Yes there were 2 Samuel Martins with Reid wives in the area and that is the confusion. Their farms also abutted each other. One Samuel Martin b. 1830 in Ontario was married to Elizabeth Reid. The other Samuel Martin was born about 1826 in Ireland and he was married to Rachel Reid. The witnesses to the latter marriage was a John Reid and Elizabeth Reid. I do believe that Elizabeth and Rachel were possibly sisters. It is the 2 Samuel Martins that have me puzzled.

Rachel Martin's death record did not ask for parents' names.
