Title: Any ideas which school late sister may have attended?
Post by: River Tyne Lass on Monday 09 November 20 18:26 GMT (UK)
I am hoping to find out which school my late sister may have attended during the war and wonder if any locals might have any ideas and might know if any  relevant school admissions and log books might exist.

My sister was born in 1938 I was told that during the war, she and my Mother went to stay with my Dad's Grandmother 'in Yorkshire' and that she went to school there.

I have found out that in 1939 and from this Great Grandmother's death cert that her home address was 10 Dixon Street, Lingdale in Skelton and Brotton. So I think that this was probably a long term address for Great Grandmother and where my Mother and sister likely lived with her.

My sister was Roman Catholic and attended an RC school when they returned to Tyneside.  So it might be that she would have attended a nearby RC school perhaps near Dixon Street if one existed.

Saltburn by the Sea?

She will have been at Primary school during the war, presumably, as aged only 7 at the end in 1945.

Thanks for responding IgorStrav.  Yes, she would have been young; I think probably only in the infants.  So I likely need to look for a Saltburn by the Sea primary school?  Is that the name?

I found this website - I googled the address which pulled up Saltburn within Maps, and then if you 'search nearby' for primary schools then a number appear close to the address.

However, I've not got far as yet seeing if any were open at the time!

On the link above, it mentions that there was a single raid in 1942 where more than 100 houses were damaged.

Then this has a picture of Dixon Street

And if you Google the address again, you can find several houses which are/were once for sale to give you an idea

I think there are a lot of possibilities.

Looking at the map Lingdale seems to be equidistant from Guisborough and Saltburn or possibly even Loftus.

There was also a Primary school at Skelton.

Is there a local history society in the area that you could contact?

Thanks for the image as well Ivor.  Yes, I will look to contact a local studies or archives as it seems that the school might not be easy to identify.  Thanks Jen for this advice.

I wished I had asked my sister more questions about this when she mentioned this all those years ago.  Shame I left things too late.

Looking at the old maps, there appears to have been a Primary School in Lingdale itself, virtually at the end of Dixon Street!

Thanks Jen and Jool.  :)

Yes, I can see the school on the map!  I think if there was not a specific RC school nearby this is likely where she would have attended.  I think they went to this area  to get away from the bombing in Tyneside.  I know my Mother had a bad experience, a very close call and I can imagine how nervous this would have made her.

I know my sister went to school in Great Grandmother's area because she once told me  that one of her little school friends there asked her if she would like to go home with her to 'see' her 'Granny'.  My sister said yes.  However, when she went home with the other little girl she was taken in to a room to see a woman lying in her coffin!  My sister said she was horrified!

Now I just need to try to find out which school was between Dixon Street and Cockburn Street in Lingdale.

I think that's the larger school over the road road from the Infants school I marked on the map on the link in reply #7

As you say, being a Roman Catholic she might have gone to an RC school if there were any in the area at the time. There is a Roman Catholic school in Guisborough, but I think it's a relatively modern one - I can't see any sign anywhere of there having been on back in the 1940's.

You could try contacting Cleveland and Teesside Local History society http://ctlhs.co.uk/

Whoops! Oh yes, I can now see the infants school marked - don't know how I only saw the bigger school.  Can't see the woods for the trees sometimes. :-[

I have since written to the present school as I know sometimes schools retain old records.

I will write to this local history society too.  Thank you so very much Jen.  :)

I have written to the local history society.

Looks like a very interesting site Jen!  I will have to look at it more closely when I get more time.  I have just noticed some familiar names on the census on this site.  Eliza's Mother was the Lucy (Louisa) Simpson nee Gamesby.  Lucy was the illegitimate daughter of Eliza Gamesby who married William Ditchburn.  On this website I think I see familiar Ditchburn names.  Perhaps Eliza moved back to be near these relatives who might have stayed in the area.  I think there might be a lead in this to be investigated.

I should add my parents were mixed marriage Dad was Catholic and Mam C of E.  They married in a registry but then a priest insisted they go through a Catholic ceremony too.  Mam never considered herself Catholic though.   I tend to think that my Mother would only have sent my sister to a Catholic school if it wasn't too far away.  So I think the Lingdale school is still the likeliest one.

Thanks so much again Jen.  :)

I have had another look at the website and it is very interesting to note that it appears that my Great x 3 Grandmother's (Eliza Ditchburn nee Gamesby - Eliza's Grandmother) son Andrew Ditchburn lived at
32 Dixon Street in 1881
5 Dixon Street in 1891
Again at 32 in 1901
40 Dixon Street in 1911

Also Arthur J Codling is living at no 10 with his family in 1911.  Eliza was with him in his house in 1939 I recall.

So I think it likely that Eliza Ann had family still in this vicinity in the 1940s and she probably moved here for family reasons yet unknown.

Thanks for this Joed.  I am not on Facebook and dare I say, it I have never really be drawn to Facebook.  (I know I will likely be considered a dinosaur about this).

This website is excellent though, I can see some of Eliza's relations on it.  And surprise surprise on there is recorded my deceased Uncle (Ernest Porritt) who married my Dad's eldest sister!!   So now I know where he hailed from.  :)  I only knew him in his later years.  When I knew him in my childhood he had unfortunately lost both legs.  Family lore was he had had an accident with a train but I can't imagine anyone would survive such an incident.  I wonder if he might have just had an accident at a mine somewhere.  Commendations to the person who created this site indeed.

Her being a Catholic may have affected where she went to school.

My mother moved from a town to a pit village in about 1930.  It was thought a Catholic education was so important that she boarded at a convent in the town to continue going to the RC school.  She was only about 6 years old and they certainly didn't have any money.

That is true, but although all my siblings went to a Catholic school in this area they sent me to a C of E school. (I am 22 years younger than sister though so big age gap) My Mother was C of E.  Dad was Catholic.  Eliza only became Catholic when she married my Grandfather's cousin James McKittrick (various spellings).  I am not sure if Eliza would have kept her Catholic religion  up after James' death although her daughter Louisa (who married my staunch Catholic Grandfather)  was originally  baptised CoE, remained a staunch Catholic to her end after becoming James's step daughter.
I think there may have been a chance that my Mother might have just sent my sister to the nearest school  and my Dad wasn't a very committed Catholic so I don't think he would have particularly minded.  A priest had refused to come out to give his Father the last rites and this greatly upset my Dad and things had gradually gone downhill from that point.  I know this is a bit longwinded but I think it is unclear which type of school my sister might have gone to.  I suspect though, knowing my Mam, if any Catholic school was more than a mile away this would have ruled things out straightaway and I think she would have opted for a C of E school.  Also, if Eliza was no longer a Catholic there may not have been any pressure from her about it. I wish I had asked them more questions about the 'Yorkshire school' when I had had the chance.
