In the 1841 I have a Catherine Halling living at Halling's Land or Holling's Land, Lanark. Because of the name of the person I am wondering if anyone knows where this is and if it was Holling or Halling?
Thanks

The image of the census looks more like Hallings Land and the transcription lists it as in the village of Maryhill
FreeCen lists neighbouring addresses as Walkers Land and Gilchrists Land At the moment I can't see it on a map https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=55.89507&lon=-4.29839&layers=5&b=1

A "Land" is a Scottish expression (much discussed on this Forum) it usually but not always, describes a tenement building of some sort and was very often named after the builder or proprietor.
It can also describe a row of single-story houses, in either case it is a "land of houses".
Lanark is a town in the county of Lanarkshire, nowhere near Maryhill which, in 1841, was still an independent village on the western boundary of the county but is now a suburb of the city of Glasgow.
It is most unlikely that Hallings Land has survived but, in my opinion, it is too much of a coincidence to imagine that your Catherine was not connected in some way to the owner of this property. Ignore the difference in the spelling of the name, that's a common occurrence.

Lodger is wise. I looked at the 1841 (Maryhill) and it is definitely a tenement. The two adjoining having the designation "Land" appear to be same.

Yep Ancestry have it as Maryhill, Barony and FindMyPast have it as Maryhill, but say Lanark.
Halling is not a Scottish name and her death in 1861 doesn't give her husband's first name unfortunately and her will gives only one daughter Jessie living in Australia so this lady is a bit of a mystery. Hoped the place she lived might give a clue but it is all confusing.
thanks for help. She seemed to work as a housekeeper for well off people and was proprietor of a house on Garscube Road so perhaps it was same area.
The more you find out the more there is to find out!

Garscube is a short road maybe a mile long that branches off of the Maryhill Road and ends at Cowcaddens.
Google map it and take a tour.

Thus failing to make the (essential) distinction between the county of Lanark and the burgh of Lanark.
This is why I always use Lanarkshire for the county and Lanark for the town/parish, to avoid this sort of confusion.

Ditto Forfarian, it's my pet hate with Ancestry, (that and putting year of birth on the census transcriptions).
We are probably not the only ones who get annoyed with the misuse of town - county names. Aberdeen, Stirling, Dumfries, Peebles, Inverness and others must have the same problem. Those lucky folk in Argyll and Fife have no idea what we have to put up with!
Is it any wonder that Skoosh takes a wee shandy ;D

Very interesting thread. I haven't had to do much research in Scotland, however I do like trawling through newspapers. There is this advertisement from 1857:
"DESIRABLE PROPERTY AT MARYHILL
FOR SALE BY PRIVATE BARGAIN,
THAT TENEMENT of Three Stories, [sic] with large Green at the back thereof, belonging to Mrs. Halling. The Ground Flat has been occupied as a Grocery and Provision Shop for the last 16 years, and the present tenant commands a first-class business; the other Two Flats are Let as Dwelling Houses. Rental £56 or thereby, but the Rents might be considerably raised, as they never have been advanced since the Property was built.
Apply to Mrs. Halling, residing on the Property, or to Mr. McLachlan, 27 Ronald Street, Glasgow.
Maryhill, 4th Feb., 1857"
Glasgow Herald, Friday, Feb. 6, 1857

I thought I'd post 2 examples of 2 RDs (Registration Districts) in the County of Lanark for people to see.
I have included the headings which make it easier to understand...
1st is RD Barony in County of Lanark
2nd is RD Lanark in County of Lanark
Edit to add...Maryhill is 28.7 Miles from Lanark (Town) & 39 mins drive

Hope this helps,

Oh, I agree entirely, and especially about the (usually mis)calculated year of birth in transcriptions, and to be fair it's not only on Ancestry - FindMyPast does it, and so did FreeCEN v2 when I last looked at it. (I use FreeCEN v1 for that very reason.)

Try Berwick on Tweed, Berwickshire which obviously doesn't exist. Thanks for the help guys. Newspaper report great thank you

I'm a bit late for the party but Catherine Halling's daughter Jessie in Australia was my great-grandmother. I should be able to help you locate Hallings Land. It was situated in a part of Garscube Road which was later called Main Street and is now known as Maryhill Road. The Mr. McLachlan mentioned in the advertisement for the sale of the house was her brother-in-law Peter McLachlan and was the one who reported her death. But why are you looking for this - are you also a descendent? Can we compare notes?
