I am looking for information on my great grandmother Julia Roberts, born 1848 (Dowlais) and died 1881(Pembrokeshire). I cannot find a record of her prior to 1873 when she married Enos Davies in Merthyr Tydfil. Her address at that time was Balaclava Road, Dowlais. Her father is David Roberts stated on her marriage certificate. An 1881 census states that she was born in Dowlais, Glamorgan. I have been unable to find a birth record or a census as a child. There is an 1871 census with a Julia Roberts living in East Street, Merthyr who was a servant but birth was North Wales. She had 3 children with Enos, the first Margaret Anne born in Aberdare and Mary Elizabeth (my gran) and Julia Edith born in Penrhiw, Manordeifi, Pembroke. I have tried all Wales and only 3 births come up. I have ruled 2 out as the father does not match. The other one is born in Machynlleth. I can only conclude that either she was not born in Wales or had a different surname? Any information or tips on how to progress would be appreciated.

Who were the witnesses to the marriage. What was he fathers occupation.
The 1871 census you found looks like her, maybe the place of birth got mixed up with the other servant :-\
-
Waw, that is interesting to see there was another daughter. Possibly died in infancy. I believe the father's occupation was a quarryman. There is no more info on him. Thanks so much for your help.
-
Sorry forgot to say the witnesses were John Morgan and John Hall. Thanks

She is in 20 trees on Ancestry, but I don't think any of them has found her before her marriage.
One tree has various poor law records for her, and then, after her death, criminal records for him.

Hi again, still shown as Julia Evans aged 2 b Llandovery, Montgomeryshire, shown as Grandaughter with same family.

I've been trying to work out that Montgomeryshire place name, transcribed as Llandovery but that is in Carmarthenshire. The 1861 place of birth looks like Llanwryd possible. There is a Llanywared.

Thanks, I am on ancestry and looks like others also having same problem. Interesting that the grandfather on 1861 census is a quarryman, same as Julia stated her father was but I suppose there would be a lot in that area. Do you think she could have taken her grandfather's surname later on?? Would that be usual?? Thanks for all the help, I am a novice at this.

Hi their is a birth registration of a JULIAH Roberts Dec qtr 1848 Mychynlleth no mmn?

not unusual to give the name of her grandfather on her marriage. She may have been brought up to thinking he was her father.
The Machynlleth registration for Juliah Roberts has no mother's maiden name so an illegitimate birth. From North Wales bmd, the birth was in the Darowen subdistrict.
-
Can I ask where do you all get information such as mmn? I only ever get the child's name and birth?
-
if you use the GRO index, on the same site that you use to order certificates,
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp
you can check for mother's maiden name in the years before it appears on FreeBmd. Also age at death before it is shown on transcriptions.

Thank you so much for that information. I take it that Vaynor is around the Merthyr area. It all sounds feasible. So do you mainly use the Free BMD site for your info, you seem to be able to gather a lot of information? That would take me days.

the parish entries are on Findmypast. Vaynor isn't far from Merthyr Tydfil.

Thanks again for the info. I intend spending today following the leads. Yes I had heard about Enos and Margaret's past.
