I am trying to find info about my ancestor Patrick Cullen and his family. Here is what I know: He was born 1786, Sligo (from his Cert of Freedom) and his parents were William Cullen (farmer) and Honora Gaffeney (from his death cert). He married Margaret Curren (I believe in 1810, Drumshambo, but I don’t have a primary source for this). They lived in Kilmactranny and had 10 children (5 boys, 5 girls). In 1837 he was convicted of stealing and transported to Australia. I have found information about his trial and about his life in Australia, and I have also have information about 5 of his children who followed their father to Australia. They are Phillip (born 1816), Ellen Mary (1818), Thomas (possibly with second name Bernard) (1824), Dominic (1826) and Bridget (1828). Thomas was born in Ballynacheagh, Sligo (immigration record) and another place name that comes up in ancestry family trees is Glenkillamy (or Lankillamy?).
I have not been able to find any Irish birth, death or marriage info for Patrick and his children. Can anyone help? Or perhaps direct me to the most useful website for Sligo records?

If it is this Drumshambo then there are no surviving Catholic church records before the 1860s.

It doesn't look like there are any for Kilmactranny either.

I see a Pat Cullen listed as having land in Glan Ballynashee in the tithes for 1825. Ballynashee looks a close fit for your Ballynacheagh.

There was a John Cullen farming there too.
Unfortunately that RC parish (Geevagh) only has records from 1851 onwards so you won’t find your Cullen family’s baptisms or marriage if that’s where they originate.
There was still a Cullen farm there in 1901:

Thank you Debra and Elwyn. It looks like I will never know the details of Pat's other children. I think its likely that the John Cullen that Elwyn found in the Tithe Applotments was Pat's brother and the John Cullen farming there in 1901 is the right age to be the grandson of either Pat or John. And now I understand that Ballynashee is a location in the Parish of Kilmacatranny. Irish place names cause me a lot of confusion :) Thanks again!

Ballynashee townland in Kilmactranny civil parish, Co Sligo is 14km NW of the small town of Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim.

Note that the county of Roscommon is situated between them and goes all the way up to Lough Allen.
A good website to find all the townlands, parishes etc superimposed on a current map is this one. It also has a link to OpenStreetMap.

Henrietta I realise this is an old post, I have the information you are looking for, not my own work but everything you are asking for is very well documented down to his living ancestors now. What is your connection?

Welcome to RootsChat, Gerry :)
The OP (henrietta165), if her email notifications are still working, should reply hopefully to your post. She was last online here in October last year.
Good luck! :D

Yes, my email notifications are still working and here I am :). Lovely to hear from you Gerry. Patrick was my 3 greats grandfather. Patrick, his son Thomas (1824-1906), his son Thomas John (1855-1943), his daughter Claudia Sarah(1891-1932). Claudia was my grandmother. Are you a relative? I would love to get some information about Patrick's children who didn't move to Australia.
-
Your 3 times ggf is #109, my 2 time ggf is #108.
You have this document?
-
Thanks Gerry. No I do not have this document and even just this screenshot has info that I have not seen before - I did not know that Patrick William had a son called Patrick. I think I might have confused you with the wording of my last reply. Patrick William (1786-1871, #108) is my 3G Grandfather, his son Thomas (1824-1906, came to Australia in 1845) is my 2G grandfather, his son Thomas John (1855-1943) is my G grandfather, his daughter Claudia Sarah(1891-1932) is my grandmother. Which one of Patrick William's sons are you descended from? Would love to get further info about the Cullens that stayed in Ireland. And very happy to share info that I have with you.

There is no definitive proof that by 2 ggf was the Patrick son of the convict but I am positively DNA linked to the Australian descendants, so in probability it is. Coincidentally my grandmother (Mary Kate McPadden) was born in the house that your ancestor lived in, it is still standing, I have pictures and it can be found on Google Earth ..Anyway most of this is not my work, I need to send you the docs, but not sure we can exchange emails here,
Gmail maybe. I need to send attachment too large for here.

We can exchange email addresses by Personal Message
I'll try to remember how to do this :)

Jumping on here a few years later, hoping the poster is still around. My husband is also descended from Patrick Cullen through his son Thomas, his daughter Honorah who married William Collins. Patrick is my husbands ggg grandfather. We are travelling to Ireland this spring and my husband wants to go to Kilmactranny and area. We too would like to know about the siblings that stayed and whether there are any ancestral homes left.

There is a connection still here and last year we had a gathering in Arigna to present the research of Dr David Cullen, if you are not in touch you should be. we both visited the remains of Patricks house, it is tumbledown now but i can claim to have slept in it as a child. I live in Northern Ireland now. if you send me your email in a private message i will put you in touch with David. anyway to wet your appetite here is a picture taken at the house in Glen Ballynashee
-
Gery, your email did not work so I will try and send a personal message once I have been approved.

Glen is the townland adjacent to Ballynashee.

It does not look like anyone lives in Ballynashee anymore. Seems rather remote based on google earth.
