This is obviously a family member of mine from way back , I found it in a frame with my great Uncle George’s picture who died with Meningitis. The couple are either from the Wilson , Haughton or Morrison line from Killeshandra, Co Cavan.
If anyone can throw any light on them I’d be grateful.
Thanks

Don't assume they are relatives, could have been close friends.
Have you tried contacting descendants of those families to see if anyone knows who is in the picture? or even has a copy of the same photo (can help narrow down the connection).
-
Can you take it out of frame and see if any date or studio is named on the back ?
Do you have an idea of a date and any likely candidates
When was your great uncle george born ? What was his surname
I think a framed picture likely to be close relatives .
..parents siblings ..children ? ( but could be godchild /parent)
Depending on his era

Brigidmac,
Thanks for your reply.
I’ve already taken the picture out of the frame and there are no details on the back, the frame is very old and George’s photo had been placed over the couple’s photo, the photo looks like it was done by a professional photographer.
I have just looked at my tree and checked George Wilson’s details, he was born in 1920 and died in 1948. George is actually an uncle of mine not a great uncle, he was my mother’s brother.
I’m wondering if the photo is of Charles Haughton who married Elizabeth Arnold. Charles died in 1870.
They have a very fancy tomb/headstone in Croghan Cemetery. My grandfather Charles Haughton Wilson’s father was John Wilson who was married to Mary Jane Haughton. Mary Jane was the daughter of Charles Haughton. I don’t know if this helps. I’m unable to check out the family photos as I had a bad fall and have damaged my shoulder and hit my head. I was at a loose end and thought I’d get back into family history.
Any advice is very welcome.

There are experts on this board who are very good at dating photos from clothes which might help you. I don’t know if you want to change the title of your post to “Can anyone date this photo?” or similar, to catch the experts attention.
-
Elwyn,
Thanks for that information, I’ve changed the title as you suggested.
-
Others are more experts than me but looks like photos I have c 1910.

I think it's WW1 or later. I see that you are maybe getting it transferred to the Photo board. Is there any chance of you re-scanning it as it's very small for restoring.

Gadget,
I took the image on an iPad, I do have a scanner/ printer but I’ve never used it for scanning and I struggle with my hands.
My daughter is here at the weekend so I’ll and try to get her to scan it, then you can have a better image.
Thanks
-
I've just resized it and it's coming out OK for restoring, I think,if you can't get a bigger scan
Ive only resized and not done any fiddling ;D
-
Gadget,
I don’t know if this image helps but here we go.
Thanks for your help

I think there's something wrong with your file, Margaret. It's 0kb and won't open.

I’ve tried to attach again but can’t seem to be able to get it to work.
Thank you for trying to help me. Your last image looked good though.
-
I think it might be 1920s. Although the woman doesn’t have the typical 20s bob, some held onto their long hair, waved it and and tied it up.
-
Thanks Ruskie for approximate date, are you able to give me an idea of their ages?
Gadget did a good job of resizing the photo even though I couldn’t get the image to attach after scanning it.
-
I'll try to do some work on it later, if you'd like.
I think we dated it earlier that Riuskie - WW1-ish/1910s. The man's collar and woman's dress are more thiat vintage that 1920s, I'd say.
-
Thanks Ruskie for approximate date, are you able to give me an idea of their ages?
Gadget did a good job of resizing the photo even though I couldn’t get the image to attach after scanning it.
Did you make sure to change the file name of the photo when re-posting? I think you get an error message if you don't.
-
Sorry Aghadowey, I’m not working well at all with technicalities at the moment as I’m recovering from a head injury and have been getting bored so delved into family history again.
I’m not able to rescan as I have limited movement with my shoulder too and the scanner is high up.
Gadget - will take you up on the offer please. Thanks
Margaret

Just as guess as the image is not too clear - both aged in their 30s perhaps?
She appears to be wearing a wedding ring.

I've had to use a lot of filters as the original was so small. This includes a slight texture. I hope it's OK.

Gadget,
WOW, you’re amazing, your work is terrific, fast and I love both images, just got to work out who they are.
You did some great work on photos many years ago for me when I got into family history in 2007.
Thanks again
Margaret

So glad you llike them :)
I've not done many restores for a while, Margaret. I had eye problems so withdrew for a while. I took up glass art but the virus has prevented me from that as I use communal studio premises. I've started restoring again as a substitute :)
-
Gadget,
Sorry to hear about the eyes.
Glad you’re restoring, you and the others always do a good job for everyone.🤩

Is that a wrist-watch on her arm? When did women start wearing wrist-watches?

Is that a wrist-watch on her arm? When did women start wearing wrist-watches?
Mr Google says:

Add - also:
Reliable wrist watches appeared between 1890 and 1920, when two trends intersected:
First, miniaturization allowed to shrink the size of mechanisms in pocket watches, and around the late 19th century watchmakers eventually managed to fit mechanisms into women's jewelry bracelets and pendants.

I'm not sure it is a watch as it's pushed far up the arm. I'll see if I can get a better image but I've enlarged it as far as it will go without pixellation.

Found thepsd of the one that I restored.
It looks like a bracelet of some kind.

Hello Mew53
The people in the picture are my granny and Grampa George and Lilly Morrison.
-
Hello Grace63,
Welcome to Roots.
This is so good that you can identify this couple, I knew they were special cos my late mother had this photo in a frame. This couple are related to me too, I’ll have to check things out but I’m pretty sure that George was an uncle of my Mum’s and if I remember correctly he was a Methodist minister. My Mum’s side of the family were Morrison’s.
If you have any more information I would love to hear from you.
It is so good to hear from you.😀

Hello mew53
Very exciting stuff. My dad George was the Methodist minister. He passed away in 2016. I think he was your mums first cousin, your granny Eliza morrison(married to Charles haugton Wilson) was sister to George morrison rip circa 1935) the couple in the picture are parents to my dad George. But daddy was also a cousin of Willy veighey who lived in belfast. I remember visiting him with my dad probably in the late 70/ early 80s, when Willy was a widower. I remember in my teens my dad taking into Dunawheel and showing me round the ruins of the old house ... he remembered the old lady (possibly Isabella ) arriving at the house in a rather grand carriage.
Can we speak directly ?
