Title: Alder Way, Carshalton
Post by: Pamela21 on Sunday 18 October 20 12:35 BST (UK)
Can anyone identify this road on an old map? It was there in 1949, that's all I know.

Can't find any mention of it. There is an Aultone Way - might that be it?

It's written very clearly as Alder Way, Carshalton on a birth certificate.

Nothing coming up on an address search on the 1939 register or on the 1911 census.

I can't see any mention in online newspapers either.

I do wonder if Shauns suggestion is right,  when the person registering the birth gave their address as Aultone it was heard as Alder  :-\

From The London Gazette, 4th December 1964.

The Minister of Transport hereby gives notice that he proposes to make an order under section 153 of the 1961 Town & Country Planning Act authorising the stopping up of Maple Close, Alder Way, Birch Crescent and a section of Willow Way to enable residential Development to be carried out in accordance with permission granted to Carshalton U.D.C. by Surrey C.C.

It may have been one of the roads off Culver Avenue which is off Green Wrythe Lane.

A quote from Helier Memories says " I used to live in the prefabs at the bottom of Culvers Avenue in Birch Crescent."  one of the roads mentioned by KGarrad. All the roads there were named after trees.
See if this works. http://www.maps-of-london.com/map-carshalton-4.jpg

There are still roads in Carshalton named after trees:

Holly Tree Close
Limes Avenue
Elm Close
Chestnut Close
Lime Close
Cherry Close
Ash Close
Almond Avenue

I can see those 'tree' streets on both old and new maps, but not Alder Way. I have just asked someone who said they were prefabs, so they might not be on the map.

If they were prefabs, it sounds as if they were erected after the war to house people. There were a lot around that area.

Okay, someone told me Alder Way was prefabs between Reynolds Close and Culvers Avenue (both on Google maps). The old map sent as a link only shows Culvers Avenue but this one shows Reynolds Close. It seems to be just underneath the fork in the river.

This overlay map from c.1955 shows the Alder Way prefabs, use the slider on the left to toggle between old and new maps.

The Durand close estate was built over the top of the site of these prefabs, typical 1960's estate.

Which itself was demolished recently with a new estate built.
