Can you also please post everything you know about all her spouse and children? -  where and when they were born, married, and died. and to whom they were married.

This might help trace her backward. For example, if some of the children were born in PA and others in OH, then at least we would know when she left PA. Also some of the children's records might mention their specific place of birth. Even the grandchildren's records might have that information.

If she married in Ohio, where? Her parents would probably be in the area.

William Barkley/Barclay wrote his will 7 February 1829 probated  6 April 1829 Perry County PA.
He was a Yeoman.
Paraphrased

Son John gets the house and most of the land and he must pay the bequests and allowance to his mother.
Son Andrew 50 acres in Liberty Valley next to John Black's heirs 1 bed and 4 sheep.
Daughter Margaret (intermarried?) with Jonathan English 50 acres, 1 bed, 1 cow? and 4 sheep. Son William 50 acres and one dollar.
Son James 50 acres and one dollar.
Daughter Nancy 1 bed 1 cow and 4 sheep.
Daughter Martha $50  to be paid out of his estate, 1 bed, 1 cow and 4 sheep.

Executors are his son John Barkley and his son in law Samuel English.

Son in law may mean the brother of his daughter Margaret's husband Jonathan English, and not as we use it today.

Thank you very much, that should help. Do you know where William Barclay (1769- c April 6, 1829) was born? If in Pennsylvania, then I can't see them going back to Scotland for the birth of one child. See next post.

Here is the christening of Margaret Barclay 20th September 1789, Kemback, Fife, Scotland

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYCT-429

That baptism was in Kemback, Fife, Scotland. Is it the same as this one? I don't know enough about the area to tell. If so, then it is not the daughter of Martha Smith and William Barclay.

baptized 20 Sep 1789, Cere Associate Congregation, Ceres, Fife, Scotland
Margaret Barclay, daughter of William and Ann (Pearson) Barclay
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY9G-4FD

and familysearch also has a baptism of Ann Barclay, daughter of William and Ann (Pearson) Barclay, same place, 17 April 1791.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY9G-Y38

-
Or were there enough Barclays in the area that it could be a coincidence, and are Fife and Ceres far enough apart to rule out them being the same child?

The two places are close and could be two different records of the same event.

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/FIF/Ceres

I was just wondering where the birth information came from as Kandi writes,
In 1789 when she was around the age of 24 she gave birth to a child on the 20th september 1789 in Kemback, fife, Scotland united states child was margaret barclay 1789-1878’

Thank you.

In William's will he mentions daughter Nancy Barkley. She was born about 1788 in Perry County, PA.

Miss Nancy Barkley, age 65, born in Perry County,  PA
died 11 November 1853, in Saville Twp, Perry County, PA
parents: William Barkley and Martha Barkley
unmarried, no living issue
buried: Stone Church [Burial Ground?]

source: Ancestry.com. Pennsylvania, U.S., Deaths, 1852-1854

and the next child after Margaret, William, was born 1794 in Pennsylvania. So it doesn't look like the family was in Scotland for the birth of their second child [Margaret]

edited: at this point we don't know when Margaret Barclay, wife of Jonathan English, was born.

I didn't find a Jonathan English to match, so it could be.

There is this transcribed record, no image.
U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900
at ancestry.com
Source type: Family group sheet, FGSE

Name: Samuel English
Gender: Male
Birth Place: PA
Birth Year: 1796
Spouse Name: Margaret Barkley
Spouse Birth Place: PA
Spouse Birth Year: 1823
Marriage State: of PA

If the "Spouse Birth Year" is actually the marriage year, it would fit with that 1850 census. And with:

1840, Saville Twp for Samuel English
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHY2-FXX

and it fits with this one for a Samuel English also, but Juniata Twp is 60 to 70 miles west of Saville Twp. I'll post it anyway.
1830 Juniata Twp, Perry County
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH59-5S9

---
At any rate, daughter Margaret was very likely born in PA, not Scotland.

I think this is talking about the Battle of Chippewa, July 5, 1814. You'd have to read the context to be sure, I just skimmed it.

Those from within the confines of what is now Perry County who served there, are as follows:
Captain David Moreland's Company.
Privates:
Barkley, William, Saville

Source: History of Perry County, Pennsylvania, including descriptions of Indians and pioneer life from the time of earliest settlement by Hain, Harry Harrison, (Harrisburg, PA: Hain-Moore Company, 1922), page 178

https://archive.org/details/historyofperryco00hain/mode/2up

-----
This book says that this William Barkley died in 1859, so he must be Martha Smith's son, now her husband.
History of Perry County from the earliest settlement to the present time, (Lancaster,Pa: Wylie & Griest, 1873)
http://archive.org/details/cu31924028854516

-----------
Perry County was formed from Cumberland County Aug 31, 1820, so earlier records, probably including the 1820 census, would be in Cumberland county. The census was [supposed to be] as of August 7.

Kandi,
It looks as though that christening is not your Margaret.

Do you have marriage details for William and Martha? Was Martha (she is the one you are searching) definitely Martha Smith?

It's possible Jonathan English died and Margaret married his brother Samuel.

Martha (Smith) Barkley in 1830, listed right after son John, who got the house and land. She got rights to live in the house:

1830 Census Saville Township, Perry County

John Barkley
1 male 30 to 39
1 female 20 to 29

Martha Barkley
1 female 20 to 29
1 female 60 to 69

next name, a Smith in-law maybe:
Margaret Smith, 1 female 40 to 49, 3 younger females, 1 male 10 to 15

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH59-5CN

-----------
Daughter Martha's will:
Pennsylvania Wills, Perry County
Martha Barkly, of Ickesburg, Saville Twp, page 53
written 9 Oct 1880
died 3 March 1881
probate starts 7 March 1881

to Martha Ann Klinepeter $50
to Presbyterian Church, Ickesburg, $50
to Margaret English (crippled girl) best bed, and balance of the money
John A Barnes, executor
witnesses  C C DeLancy, Kate J Bower

------------
Daughter Martha in 1880, note father's birth place
1880 Census Ickesburg, Perry Co
June 18, 1880
Martha Barkley, 75, single, keeping house, born in Pennsylvania, father in Ireland, mother in Pennsylvania

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWN1-T55

That doesn't mean for sure that he was born in Ireland. That would depend on how well Martha knew the facts and remembered them.  But it at least gives a big hint as to his heritage.

--------------
Martha (Smith) Barclay's son Andrew was in Tuscarora Twp, Juniata Co, Pennsylvania, in 1860. Could that be where she died, and not Tuscarawas County, Ohio? They sound the same. Or do you know for sure she had a child in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio? Or other solid information.

--------------------
for Smith in "Eastern part of Cumberland County" PA in 1790:

I found 12 on the first 3 pages of that section and then quit looking. Martha's parents will have to be found some other way. - And there is no information yet that says that she met and married William Barclay in the area where they later lived. They could have come from elsewhere.

Martha's son William was alive 9 May 1869 when he signed this application for a pension based on his participation in the War of 1812.

in Huntingdon County
9 May 1869
William Barkley, enlisted at Carlisle, Cumberland County, on or about 28 February 1814. served as a private in a company commanded by David Moreland and attached to a regiment commanded by Col James Fenton. served 6 months. honorably discharged 28 August 1814. was then and is now a citizen of Pennsylvania.
signed William Barkley, Post Office Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, PA. witness: George P Wakefield

-------
an index record to his pension files says his wife's name was Jane:

War of 1812
WO 9552
William Barkley
widow: Jane Barkley
service: Captain D Mooreland Co., Pa Militia

----------
His son Robert's death certificate, Dec 31, 1912, Shirley Twp, Huntingdon Co, says parents: William Barkley, born Perry County, Jane Piper, born Pennsylvania
informant: someone in Shirleysburg

------------
This is Martha's son William, in Shirley Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA in 1870.
1870 Census, Shirley, Huntingdon Co

William Barkley, 76, born in Pennsylvania, laborer, father foreign born
Jane, 73, both parents foreign born
Nancy 35, Elizabeth 32, Robert 30, James 15, Amanda 10
Margaret 9, Robert 8, George 5

all born in Pennsylvania

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZPC-KW3

note that he says his father was foreign born. His sister Martha's info in 1880 said her father was born in Ireland. So it looks more like William Barclay (c1794 - 1829) was born in Ireland.

I didn't find Martha (Smith) Barkley in 1840. Nor her daughter Martha, nor her son William. I found the other children in 1840 and 1850 and Martha Smith is not with any of them. It's possible she died between 1830, when she is on the census next to her son John, and 1840, when John is listed close to Samuel (and Margaret) English, but no sign of Martha Smith.
