Here is another unknown building that I would like to put a name to. It feels familiar to me but I don't know whether that is because of the times that I have looked at it.
Thanks for looking.
Carol

Someone who can afford more than one gardener.
-
The chimney pots are rather like those at Hampton Court and the roof looks decorative.
Could be anywhere couldn't it ::)
-
Yes the pots are unusual aren't they. It could, you are right!
Carol

Toad of Toad Hall.
-
What are the (2?) arches on the bottom left. Too small for a garage?
-
Toad of Toad Hall.
I'll take that ;D

Not sure...can't see them well enough but the property is in an elevated basement?
Carol
-
Could they be the entrance to the front door depending on whether you go up the steps on the right or along the path? on the left?
-
The two arches possibly go into a porch?
What is on the inset stone?
Can you scan this part of the image, from the original photo at 300/400 to 600 dpi?
Mark
-
There appears to be 2 plaques on the wall between the two arches, they could have something engraved on them, or maybe just ornamental. Can you get a better scan of them Carol.
-
It feels familiar to me
Carol, surely it's perfectly obvious that it's 'Cazza's House' before it was 'remodelled' ;D https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=727464.msg5719123#msg5719123
-
It has an ‘Arts and Craft’ period feel about it.
Similar to Blackwell in the Lake District.

It's a number Mark, either 1 or 4 I will scan tomorrow.

Funny that you should say that as I bought it in Grasmere two weeks ago ;D

Thanks to you all for joining in the search, it is much appreciated :-*

Or are they the sloping top of a buttress? A zoomed-in scan would probably clarify.

Hi all, could the design set in the brickwork over the windows be a representation of a Masonic symbol?

Who knows Jen....it's anybody's guess ;D
Carol
-
I don't see any Masonic symbols Colin...but one never knows.
Carol
-
Scanned the "Plaque" but not very clear and it appears to be a recess ... ::)
Carol
-
Definitely not Blackwell. but looks like the same vintage.
Probably not in the Lake District, as Arts and Crafts houses here usually have slate roofs rather than tiled.
-
Nice to have "Local Lad" on the case, thanks for your observations Mike...much appreciated.

Now I'm just waiting for the house to be identified as sitting on the edge of Windermere!

Hello Carol
The main cylindrical part of the flue to the left chimney (twin chimneys R/H end of building) is a "Barley Twist" pattern chimney.
Mark
-
Cheers Mark.....I may have to scan the chimneys and try a Google match.

Hello Carol
All these cylindrical chimney flue patterns should have an exact name (some may have a variant name by Manufacturer too). Even the chimney top/crown will have likely been chosen from a named pattern book, for the bricklayer to follow, or builder to buy.
One design has Chevrons, but there will be several Chevron chimney patterns too (plus other joined Chevron designs).
Perhaps you could try emailing Red Bank your photo for pattern names? ...

Thanks Mark for your interest and for taking the time to look, it's much appreciated. will investigate further when I have the time.
Carol

I may have missed it on this thread but is there a name for the way the roof tiles are laid :-\.
-
It's not been mentioned so Rosie.

Hi Rosie, I did a bit of googling on the tiles the other day and found some information here...
https://www.tudorrooftiles.co.uk/products.html
https://www.tudorrooftiles.co.uk/blogs/blogs1.html#gsc.tab=0
http://theheritagedirectory.co.uk/product.asp?prodid=59
Even with this knowledge I am still no closer to finding Carol's mystery house ::)
Still looking ;D
-
Wow!...How many different types of tiles? I have been looking on and off, between packing 30 years of accumulated clutter as we have sold the house and bought a bungalow, but...3 into 2 won't go ::)
Onwards and upwards ;D
Anyone want a Treadle Singer sewing machine, serial number 1906, currently being used as a telephone table ;D
Carol
-
Carol, I love those old Singer treadle sewing machines. I was offered one by a friend years ago but I didn't have the room for it (still don't). Good luck with the house move, I know it can be stressful.
We will understand if you "go missing" for a while, I'm sure you are very busy. :)
-
Thank you Jool, I see what you mean :)
Carol it is good to hear that you have sold your house, it is nice to have some sort of normality. Hope all goes well with your move.
My mother replaced her treadle Singer with a newer model and always regretted it.
-
Thanks Rosie and Jool, I will have to part with it, unwillingly ::)
Carol
-
Thanks for posting, Happy memories :)
We do become attached to these things don't we, I remember Mum's used to go really fast and always smoothly. My 1970's machine (not Singer) although it had all sorts of attachments never ran as well as that old Singer.
-
Just a thought on the tiles FWIW. Late Victorian ...roofs in this period were often patterned either with different coloured machine made tiles ; sometimes referred to as geometirc or mathematical tiles. Sometimes capped with terracotta decorative ridge tiles.
-
The style and shape of the house looks similar to Lady Wimborne cottages in and around Wimborne, Dorset probably late Victorian, however the chimneys look more like Elizabethan.
-
Thanks for your interest and your input Jeff and BB, you learn something new every day on here ;D
I have a feeling that this one will remain a mystery ::)
Carol

Carol
Looking closer one doesn't look like a chevron. One spiral goes one way around and the other spiral the other way around to cross over, giving a diamond.

Thanks for that Mark....I think this one will remain a mystery....maybe it has changed beyond recognition.
Carol

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to search for this, I really appreciate it. I think this one will forever remain a mystery :-\
But....you never know ;D

I know this is an old post and not sure if Carol ever discovered the location?
It appears to be Nettleden House, Nettleden Road, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
Built in 1856, the good news is it's still standing!

I’ve been trawling through that thread again. Sadly most of the links that people added don’t work any more.
What frustrating fun it was. ;D
