The wonderful help I had in the last day or so is very much appreciated and I am hoping that I haven't exhausted your patience :-)

This one appears to be an earlier photo of the same family showing the same children, if I am correct then the baby in this one is Albert, the boy who was seated in the other photo. He was born in 1885.
Would the experts agree with that date ?
and if anyone has the time/inclination to give the photo a wash n brush up I would be very grateful.
thanks

Definitely the same family, Boo, and there's John George in his position at the back :)
It looks like mid-1880s - say 1885 +/- 3
I might have a go at this one too :D

Thanks Gadget.
Looking at the birth/deaths dates of all 9 children (including the wee ones who, sadly, were born and died too soon) I do think that its the same children as in the later photo, so the baby would have to be Albert.
Trishanne will be happy to know that this one is pre- John George wearing specs :-)
I just love the expression on the little boy's (James Arthur) face, bottom right. That's mischief just waiting to be let loose, good job his Dad is holding on to his shoulders :-)

What were the dates of all the children, Boo?
Here's a grab of the two pics next to each other for matching :)

Gadget
children
01 Mary Ann, b 1871 Shetland - d 1880 Gateshead
02 Jessie, b 1873 North Leith - d 1873 North Leith
03 John George, b 1875 Conside & Knitsley, Durham, d 1949 Lewisham
04 Rebekah, b 1877 Gateshead, d 1880 Gateshead
05 Peter, b 1879 Gateshead, d 1880 Gateshead
06 James Arthur, b 1881 Gateshead, d 1880 EDIT 1957 Gateshead
07 Margaret, b 1883 Gateshead, d 1981, Coquitlam, BC, Canada
08 Albert b 1885 Gateshead, d 1976, Throckley, Northumberland
09 Agnes Jane, b 1887 Gateshead d 1890 Gateshead
Hence, given the dates I believe only the children marked in bold can possibly be the ones on both photos.

That is lovely work Handypandy. I really am in awe of the skills everyone in here has - and the patience that must be needed to use them:-)
Thank you very much.

Thank you Gadget, they are super, its really kind of everyone to go to all this trouble on my behalf and its much appreciated.
I noticed that piece of paper when the photos arrived here - I wondered if it was a sweetie wrapper, perhaps an attempt to keep little Mr Mischief quiet while the photos were taken :-)

I saw the piece of paper, but couldn't see any glasses !!

he he, I thought you'd check that carefully - must have been later that his eyesight problem was diagnosed :-)
Thank you very much Trishanne, they are both super and I'm very grateful to you and everyone who gives of their time so willingly.
I'm going to have to do an awful lot of 'pay-forward' to balance all this help out, but I will do it:-)

There is really no need for any 'pay forward' balance. We all love restoring and colouring photos. In any case it keeps us going during lockdown. If you and anybody else can keep posting photos for us, it is us who will be indebted to you.

oh apologies, I really didn't mean you would expect it.
Over the years I have been looking into family history I have been very aware that we ALL rely on the kindness of strangers who have taken time to produce something - an answer to a query, improving a an old image, transcribing old registers etc and I can't ever pay them back (and they don't require me to).
So I have my own pay forward system, I do transcribing, help where I can in places like RC and happily share what I find with anyone who is interested in the same families.
It all adds to the whole and improves everyones chances of finding what they are looking for.
Its a personal thing, I don't expect others to do the same, but it keeps me happy to know I am adding to the pot of info.
:-)

Sorry this has taken a while but I've had to bob in and out. I don't do colour very often these days but hope it's OK for you. I put a warming filter on it as they looked cold (like the weather in Newcastle today)

(tried to post but RC told me it was too big. I hope this is small enough)

Sorry Gadget, its not OK at all.
its 'very' good and I really appreciate the time and effort you have put in. They do look a bit warmer :-) Though the weather on Tyneside wouldn't have bothered the parents much after living on Shetland.
Back then George was a fisherman and crofter like most folk on the isles, so was outside both on the land and sea in all weathers.
Thanks yet again

According to the delivery company, they were dropped off day before yesterday, You were, apparently, not answering but the man next door but one was very happy to take them in for you.
If he hasn't brought them round yet, the pasties may be past their best?

Thank you tomkin! That is lovely work, again:-)
Still fascinated here at the subtle differences each restorer brings to their restores, not changing anything from the original and I'd be hard pushed to choose any one over another but each restore is unique.
