Title: Mason Family Westminster / Tunbridge Wells
Post by: KimmiRowell on Tuesday 15 September 20 08:38 BST (UK)
Hi all,
Looking for some help with my G G Grandfather's side of the family please. John Mason was born in October 1862 in Tunbridge Wells, his mother was Anna Gibbs and his father John Jonathan Mason ( a plasterer) were married in the Parish Church of St Duntstan's West Fleet Street Westminster, 13th April 1862. Doing the maths she was clearly pregnant at the time of getting married.  John married a Laura Elwig at St Steven's Tonbridge 2nd March 1887. They had 4 sons, John James (b) 24th Oct 1888, Henry Walter (b) 15th Feb 1890, Frank Hubert (b) 9th May 1891 and Walter Roland (b) 9th Sept 1893. At this time the family was living in Tonbridge and John was a platerer / journeyman. However, John abandoned his family and married (?) Annie Lucy Jackman (b) 1870 Weedon, Buckinghamshire.  in 1891 census, she is working in Paddington as a servant. in 1901 census, she is in the Fulham Infirmary, where my G Grandmother, Rhoda Margaret Mason was born on May 14th 1901. On my G Grandmothers birth certificate, her mother is listed as Annie Lucy Mason ( nee) Jackman and her Father as John Mason plasterer / journeyman. I am so consufsed as I cant find andy married certificates for Annie Lucy Jackman and John Mason, however, they did go to South Africa together in July 1901 with another daughter Kathleen Vera who was born in 1899 (?) Any information would be greatfully recived x

I think it unlikely Annie Lucy and John married as he would have been still legally married to Laura.

That is what I thought too. I guess they lied on the birth cert.  :D

However, John abandoned his family

Isn't he together with Laura on the 1901 census?

Certificate

The cert says she was a widow, but the probate record says married, deserted by husband Jack Mason

When did John/Jack go to SA, I can see Mrs Mason (28) and K (2) & R (1) going in 1901 on the Avondale Castle

Thank you all for your input. I really mean that. I was given up for adoption in South Africa, so tracing my family means a lot to me. I does appear that there is a lot more to this story x
