Title: The Gilligan family
Post by: Helina on Monday 07 September 20 12:53 BST (UK)
I am having great trouble with this family so would appreciate any help you can give.

Mary Ellen Shepherd born 1881 Stroud Gloucestershire.  Parents Edwin and Mary Ann Shepherd.  In 1900 Mary Ellen married William Gilligan in Cardiff

According to the 1911 census they had 7 children all alive.  Now the problem starts
Children

Uriah Gilligan  1901-1987 Canton, Cardiff, Glamorgan
Mary Ann Gilligan born 1903 Canton, Cardiff, Glamorgan
Louisa Caroline Gilligan 1904-1994 Canton, Cardiff, Glamorgan
Sarah Jane Gilligan born 1905 Cardiff
William Gilligan born 1906 Cardiff
Thomas Henry Gilligan born 1908 Cardiff
George Gilligan born 1910 Pontypridd/ Cardiff

No trouble finding the birth reg for Uriah, Mary Ann, Louisa and Thomas Henry
For the other 3 children I can find no information.

The father William was born in 1875 in Swansea.  Wandering if I have the correct 1911 census as William is down as born in 1871.  https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=2353&h=395171&ssrc=pt&tid=170963749&pid=292223664141&usePUB=true

They go on to have 2 more children Nellie born 1913 and James born 1916.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Rosie,   I had not come across that birth entry, the George born 1910 was on the 1911 census but unfortunately he could of died by 1917.

Cannot find a death for the first George between 1910-1917

Those two indexes are for the same George - the birth was not registered until 1917 but also shows on the index where it should have been

Helina

Have you looked at William's WW1 Military Records - Inland Water Transport Corps

He's listed as William Gillingham born 1876 address 32 Laura St, Pontypridd
Aged 40 enlisted Oct 1916
Married at Cardiff "Regastry Office"
Royal Engineers, Inland Waterways and Dock Companies
Regimental Number 205347

In them all the children born at the time of his enlistment are listed. There are 2 pages with their names, one with no dates and the other o poor quality, but you can just make out I think that George was born in what looks to be possibly ? 3/10

Is it possible the children's birth certificates would have been needed for army purpose and since they didn't have one they had to get one post-dated?

Not sure about James. There was a James Gilligan born in Cardiff in 1916 but with MMN Walton. That James appears to have died in 1926. Seems like that might be a different family.

Thanks DNA,  Funny I had just found the birth reg for Nellie, but had not come across the marriage yet.  Maybe slowly getting there. What I find strange is no problem finding the birth reg for half the children the other half are hiding somewhere.

Hi Helina.  My great 1st cousin 2 times removed Winifred Millicent Whittington married Thomas Henry Gilligan in Queensland Australia. He enlisted in WW2 and gives his birthplace as Cardiff Wales and date of birth as 04 07 1907. See the Australian National Archives enlistment records:

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=4456369

Assuming this is the right Thomas Henry Gilligan, this might give you more clues. (There is even a photo from enlistment)
Good luck
Karen

Hi again-  The QLD BDM index has this entry

Death registration:

Thomas Henry Gilligan

Birth year: 1909Death date: 05/01/1981
Mother's name: Helen Shepherd
Father/parent's name: William Gilligan
Registration details: 1981/50865

So it’s the right person, but a different birthdate has been provided.
