Title: Looking for Renwicks of Roxburgh, Scotland
Post by: pelirroja on Thursday 27 August 20 21:47 BST (UK)
My 4x great grandparents were James Renwick Oct 28, 1764-? and Jean Anderson 1755-?. I have documented both, especially James Renwick, but I’ve never found their death years.

The parents of James Renwick were William Renwick, Castleton, Roxburgh, Scotland and Janet Glendinning, Castleton, Roxburgh, Scotland.  Their birth years might be 1734-1744 but just a guess.
James had a sister, Catharine Renwick, born Oct 1754 in Castleton, Roxburgh, Scotland.

I’m hoping to find information about my 5x great grandparents and Catherine Renwick.  I’ve mostly used Ancestry and occasionally Family Search.  Thank you.

The records on Ancestry and Family Search are only transcriptions unfortunately.

If you go to  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  you will find the original records. It is a pay site but once you register the costs are minimal. You buy blocks of credits and use them to view the records if the exist. Pre official registration in 1855 many of the Scottish Records have been lost if they existed in the first place.

From the Scotlandspeople Index -

James Renwick's birth for 28/10/1764 - Castleton - is ref 784/ 10 141. Parents check out with what you have.

Jean Anderson's birth for 25/5/2755 - Hobkirk - is ref  790/ 10 44. Only her father listed as George Anderson.

There is another birth for a Jean Anderson - 9/3/1770 - Wilton - Parents listed as John Anderson and Jean Thorburn. Two entries under  ref  810/ 20 64  and  810/ 10 185.

You may want to check these out.

Catherine Renwick birth for 18/10/1754 - Castleton -  Ref  784  10 30.

No marriages/deaths coming up with a quick look but you may wish to check this out yourself.

Hope this helps,

Dorrie

Dorrie, Thank you for your reply.  The dates you found are helpful, and I’ll go to Scotlandspeople.  You’re right in that more information is available on the original records.
Thank you again.

Just for ref before looking at Scotlandspeople FreeREG has some records:

Children of William/Margaret;
MARGARET 01 Oct 1749
CATHERINE 1754 and JAMES 1764 as stated earlier.

Margaret appears to have married Robert HOGG 19 Jun 1769
There are quite a few children born to them 1769-1786. On some Mother is Peggy Renwick/Ranwick, others Margaret.

Trish :)

Trish, Thank you for your reply. A quick question....Margaret is a third child of William Renwick and Janet Glendinning?

not all death were recording on a national register until 1855

try the church records and you might hit lucky

also, the MIs for that area

if they were living in wilton the current graveyard started mid 1800s

the old wilton graveyard has been grassed over, but the local authority should have the lair records and the hertiage hub may have some old MI records

I appreciate the suggestions.  What is the Heritage Club and what are the MLs and where can I locate them?  Thank you.

The heritage hub is part of the heart of Hawick - the history centre for the borders and is linked to register house in Edinburgh

MIs are basically gravestones

You could also try the borders family history society
