Hi
If anyone has access to the burial records for Preston cemetary, could they please lookup Jonathan Thomas Bowles died 22 March 1921. I’ve found his first wife Clara Bowles, and second wife Mary Elizabeth In separate plots, but he doesn’t seem to be buried with either?
Thanks

Yes, that's him, his death announcement is in the Shields Daily News, 24 March 1931.
Interment at Preston Cemetery.

Thank you both for the very quick replies and information - sorry, 1921 was a typo 🙄
Is there any way to find out roughly out where the headstone may be? His second wife’s headstone was erected by her brother, so I assume he must be separately buried?
Thanks

North Shields local studies has the burial volumes and full details on microfilm.
Up to a certain period the Preston Cemetery records only gave grave number and not section. However, I think by 1931 section was included as well.
Tyne and Wear Archives would also have the burial records but only on microfilm. They are hoping to reopen in the Autumn.
The North Shields local studies is still closed to the public at the moment but may open in September. The staff are still working there so perhaps you could email to ask if it might be possible for them to check for you.
If not, as you are in Tyne and Wear perhaps you might be able to get along yourself when it reopens? Scroll down for contact info on link.

The Preston cemetery staff would also be able to let you know, of course, for a charge.

By the way it might turn out that he might be in a grave with a wife but just not mentioned on a headstone. In another cemetery, I have five ancestors in a family buried in one grave but only two are recorded on the memorial.
My best advice out of all this above at the current time with nothing open - email the North Shields local studies. :)

Thanks RTL. I Knew that the archives were still closed, but wasn’t sure about North Shields as I don’t live nearby. I’ll email them just incase.
I’ll also add it to my list for my next visit, just incase!
Thanks

If you don't live nearby in Tyne and Wear if the local studies staff are unable to help out at the moment (although I think they might) I would be willing to check out for the grave site reference when this local studies reopens.
The cemetery office would be able to let you know section, grave number and if he does have a memorial but they charge these days for this service.
Let us know how you get on. If he does have a grave stone you might want to add a photo request on Find A Grave. I am adding photos to Find A Grave for that cemetery - but it is huge. If there is a stone I would of course keep an eye out for it when I do get to that cemetery occasionally.

Thanks for the offer - usually in the summer I manage to get to the library during my holidays, but I’ve missed this year, so I have a growing list of things to look for! I could stay for a couple of days easily once they reopen.
I’ll let you know if they aren’t able to look for me.
Thanks again

I have looked up the burial entry 2308 unfortunately no section is given but Jonathon is in grave number 9983 and was buried on 26 March 1931.
Death was at 37 Guy? or Grey? Street. He was a Fisherman.
Hopefully from grave number 9983 you will be able to know if he is with a wife.

Thank you so much for looking this up for me. He lived in Grey street, and was a fisherman, so it’s definitely him.
I’m definitely one step nearer to finding him!
Thanks again RTL x

The archives came back to me to say Jonathan is buried in the same plot as his first wife Clara.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find the grave, although it is documented on a BillionGraves - using the gps it’s in a very overgrown part of the cemetery. Hopefully the weeds will be cut back at some point and I might be able to see if he is named on the stone, as the picture on Billiongraves only shows his first wifes name.
Thank you to everyone for your help with this.

Hi Shazzi,
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/215518143/clara-jane-bowles
Just to let you know I have found the grave stone of Clara Bowles, where you have found out that Jonathon lies there too. (See link)
If you do manage to get along there yourself it will be easy for you to find in section C General. Just keep walking straight up from the entrance. Once you have reached the end of the hedge which runs on your left along sectionn C, stop and look over behind and you should see a black cross memorial. Clara's grave stone is very close to this. Hopefully, a photo I have added to Find A Grave should help with finding the position.
This is the inscription:
'IN LOVING MEMORY OF
CLARA JANE
BELOVED WIFE OF
JOHN THOMAS BOWLES
WHO DIED 4TH JUNE 1925
AGED 61 YEARS'

Thank you so much for doing this for me, it is very appreciated! I did get there last week and added more graves to findagrave, but didn’t manage to see it. Hopefully I will be able to get there soon.
Again, thank you for all your help.
