Title: Fr. John Magill and Fr. Daniel Magill, New Zealand
Post by: jackmcgill on Sunday 23 August 20 16:07 BST (UK)
I am researching a family that came to New Zealand in the 1920s from County Antrim.

Daniel Magill (1869-1948)
Sarah McAllister (1890-1969)
and their 3 boys
Patrick (1816-1971)
Fr. John Magill (1918-?)
Fr. Daniel Magill (1922-?)

The parents and Patrick are buried in Matamata cemetery, as shown on findagrave.com.

Does anyone have any information on John and Daniel, who were both Catholic priests?

Perhaps someone has access to a directory of clergy, that might mention where they served.

I did find a 2007 death record online for a Father John Thomas Magill, but his calculated birth year (1930) is a little off, and his siblings names don't quite match.

Thank you.

The probated will of Daniel Magill senior makes no mention of his son John.......

Added: Probated will of mother, Sarah, mentions only son Patrick........

I don't know how current this information is:

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/New_Zealand_Church_Records

There are currently no Catholic church records for New Zealand available online. Most Catholic registers are kept in the parish where they were created. To find which parish your ancestor may have attended, visit the Catholic Diocesan website. There are six Catholic Dioceses in New Zealand:
•   Auckland - Catholic Diocese of Auckland at 30 New St, St Mary’s Bay, Auckland 1011, New Zealand
•   Christchurch - Catholic Diocese of Christchurch at 2/9 Washington Way, Sydenham, Christchurch 8011, New Zealand
•   Dunedin - Roman Catholic Diocese of Dunedin at 300 Rattray St., Private Bag 1941, Dunedin 9054, New Zealand
•   Hamilton - Catholic Diocese of Hamilton at 51 Grey Street, Hamilton East 3216, New Zealand
•   Palmerston North - Diocese of Palmerston North at 33 Amesbury Street, Private Bag 11 012, Palmerston North, New Zealand
•   Wellington - Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington at 22-30 Hill Street, Thorndon, WELLINGTON 6011, New Zealand
Additionally, the Catholic Dioceses of Auckland and Christchurch have diocesan archives that house some parish registers.
•   Auckland - Catholic Diocese of Auckland Pompallier Heritage Centre and Archives at 30 New St, St Mary’s Bay, Auckland 1011, New Zealand - genealogical research is only permitted for records taken before 1900
•   Christchurch - Catholic Diocese of Christchurch Archives at 2/9 Washington Way, Sydenham, Christchurch City 8011
The Auckland War Museum also has many church records, including Catholic records, that are available to look at in their reading room. They also have some church records available online.

You could Google the Diocese as listed and try to obtain information........

I am wondering whether Fathers John and Daniel MAGILL, went back to Ireland (or elsewhere).

There are no deaths so far on the BDMH that match their birth years.

Re reply #5.......

The directory mentioned is held by the National Library. You can "Ask a Librarian"......

Jack I should mention that I think the spelling of the surname of Patrick's daughter named in his will, is incorrect. One 'P' too many?

I just heard back from the "Ask a Librarian". I was told that were both noted to be serving in Australia.

After a few quick google searches, I found findagrave memorials for John (1972) and Dan (2010). I also found a nice transcript of Father Daniel's eulogy.

Thank you for all your help!

Father Dan Magill was a redemtorist priest and died about 2011 in Perth. His brother John died over 35 years ago. I never met him and not sure where he is buried.

Thanks Minnie
Did see that, Uncle Dan (great uncle) was a very special man. My husband, who is the relative, grew up calling Dan Uncle Dan the magic man. He baptised some of our children when he was back visiting Matamata where he grew up.
