Hi,
I have found my 7 x great grandfather Cuthbert Evans of Stanhope listed in Forfeited Estates Commission: abstracts of estates of Popish recusants 1717 on Findmypast.
My old eyes can make out some of his entry but I cannot decipher the headings at the top of the columns of the page.
As it’s information from National Archives am I able to post the top of the page with the headings on here for help?
Best wishes,
Carole

Yes Carole, Just crop the parts of the handwriting that you wish to study :)

Sarah

Thank you Sarah :)
Attaching the page headings and Cuthbert’s entry which is at the top of the list.
Any help with deciphering the headings etc would be really appreciated.
Best wishes,
Carole

Only managed to post half of the image so trying to attach the rest.

I think the first heading is:
Names of Papish
Recusants Convict &
Papists who have
Registered their Estates
-
Third heading:
Parishes & Townships
where the same Iye.
These records are really interesting. My ancestors in Tudhoe (not too far from Stanhope) lost everything thanks to their part in the Rising of the North (1569). The head of the household was condemned to death but pardoned by EIizabeth I who took his property instead.

Thank you Greensleeves, Bookbox and goldie61 for your help!
Mary Bowes? widow has entries all down the page in various parishes. Is she the Popist recusant and Cuthbert Evans the tenant/occupier of her land or is he a Popist recusant too?
-
I understand it as Cuthbert being the occupier. He might have been a recusant too.
Are you certain all entries were for the same Mary Bowes?
-
Hi Maiden Stone,
It looks like the same Mary Bowes and she owned land in other parishes Brancepeth etc.

There's an article on "History Scotland" about the collection when it was added to FindMyPast.

The heading for Column 4, in which Cuthbert Evans appears, is Names of the Ten(an)ts & Occupyers, not Recusants. There's no implication here that Cuthbert was a recusant.
The missing word in Columns 7 and 8 is Int(erest).

I agree for Column 7, but I think Column 8 is Am[oun]t.

Yes, of course it is. I was writing on a small phone-screen, had misremembered the details, and couldn't get back to the image to check, sorry.

I guessed it might be something like that - ain't technology wonderful? ;)

I couldn't decipher the word ending "ts" so based my answer on Goldie's transcription. (I'm blaming the experts. ;D)
Could Mary Bowes have been related to the well-known Bowes family, ancestors of the present Queen?

Yes it does look like he was the tenant. Thank you for your help deciphering the document!
