Hello - If any member plans to visit Rochdale Cemetery is it possible you could take a photo of a headstone for me. I used to live in Castleton, Rochdale and drive there myself, but we have moved a some distance away and coronavirus has made it necessary for me and hubby to stay indoors. Been inside since March.
The grave has the names Charles and Sophie Whiteley - Fred and Sarah Ann Bottomley. There are also cremated remains for two other Bottomleys - Florence and John Henry but not sure if these are going to be on the headstone.
The grave is number 23176 and is situated in Square R Plot 24 - I have attached a cemetery plan. Hope somebody can help. Thank you

Hi Michelew, I am hoping to go up this weekend and I have looked on the map the grave is very close to my family grave. Is it a big stone any noticeable features? I went up a few months back looking for another family grave. I had all the details but I was going round in circles trying to find it Its not always possible to read the grave number. I shall try my best to find it and take a photo. Anne.

Were Charles & Sophia siblings? Did Charles die 1912 & Sophia 1920?
Did Fred die 1921?
-
Hello I have no idea who Charles and Sophia Whiteley are and have nobody to ask - the only person available is my nephew Lee and he won't know. Charles was buried 21 December 1912
Sophia - 21 September 1920. Florence and John Henry are my nephews grandparents and Fred and Sarah Ann are John Henry's parents. The reason for me trying to unlock this is many many years ago my nephew with his mum and dad (now both passed) moved to Morecambe. I have done a bit of research but can't find any Charles and Sophia Whiteley nor a marriage. I was hoping there might be some dates on the headstone which would help me.
Looking forward to the picture. regards Michele

Michele, hope you don't mind me asking - have you definitely established that there is actually a gravestone?

jonw65 I had no idea Family search had the registers for graves. Do you know what years they have? I have about 5 family graves in Rochdale Cemetery. My mum and dad are buried very close to 23176 so it won't be a wasted journey.
THanks Anne

Hi
Years covered are said to be 1855 to 1999
All films are open

,
I didn't find the graves registers straightforward, you will probably have to search by date of first burial/purchase (which can be tricky sometimes)

Deleted, error ::)

Hi Jonw65 thanks for the information Anne
-
Thanks to everybody who has offered help. I was advised by Rochdale local studies that a headstone was erected on 29th March by John Henry Bottomley.
I will now look further into the Whiteleys.
Michele

I can’t find any biological connection between the Whiteley’s and the Bottomley’s at the moment.
1883 - Fred Bottomley b 1863 married Sarah Ann Collier b 1865. No children on subsequent censuses but a son John James was born & died 1900 in Rochdale. John Henry was b 1902 in Blackpool - perhaps the sea air had some beneficial effect 😀

Hi Michelew, We went to Rochdale cemetery, we searched all over Sq R but we couldn't find Charles and Sophia's Grave. Most of the graves have no number and a lot of them are in poor condition. But right at the end we found Florence and John Henry Bottomley's grave. Hopefully I can upload it now for you. Anne
Sorry I'm having issues uploading the photo, I've tried resizing it but it won't upload.

Hello Anne - Thank you so much for the photo - it means a lot to me. The information I have was given to me by Janet at Local Studies. The reels in Local Studies are sometimes quite difficult to read, and there are usually two grave details on each page, so I am guessing that might be where the problem lies. Sending me this picture is all the information I require. Once again thank you.
Once this pandemic goes maybe I can get to Rochdale again - I have a book with lots of info I have scribbled down - for me to get some answers. The trouble now for me is I have to get a train from Widnes to Mcr Piccadilly -then tram to Victoria and then train to Rochdale, then walk up Maclure Road and on to Touchstones or get a tram from station to Rochdale centre and then walk the rest. I don't mind usually but I am 74 and a bit slow and unsteady on my feet - My husband comes with me and we have our lunch out in town - we have to leave latest 4.00 pm to start off back to get a train to Widnes otherwise they go straight on to Liverpool Lime Street. When we lived in Rochdale our concessionary bus pas covered us for trams and trains as well as the buses - but Widnes (Halton Council) only cover us for buses. Regards and best wishes Michele
-
Hi Michelew, Your very welcome glad I could help you. The journey from Widnes to Rochdale sounds long and costly when passes don't cover train as well as buses. Glad the photo was helpful in your research and if you need anymore help you can message me and if I can I will. This is a really good place to get answers, everyone is so helpful. Regards Anne

I provided a link to the relevant graves register on FamilySearch!

Super photo, Anne. That must be the grave with only those interred in later years - or rathertheir cremated remains - being on the headstone?
-
Rest of it
-
Thanks jonw65 we nearly didn't find it, the grave was way further back than we thought. It would be nice to have some markers to help locate graves. Regards Anne

You won't believe how fantastic all your help has been to me. Not only have I got so much more info on my family but you have showed me how to access cemetery grave records. These records showing grave interments are the missing link at Local Studies - they have the reels showing a persons burial detail - ie grave - dates - but who else is in the grave and the location is held at the Cemetery Office. I am going to be very busy catching up. Thanks once again. Michele
