Title: What might you name your children?
Post by: ryan on Friday 06 August 04 14:17 BST (UK)
Hi!

I'm curious to know: what might you name your children, or what have you already named your children?

Do naming patterns or traditions effect your decisions? Which names are your favourites, or which names are you not so keen on?

Do tell  :)

I wanted to name my daughter Kitty after my 3xGt-Grandmother who I'm quite fond of, but my husband hated the name.

Instead I gave her Elizabeth as a middle name as this is the middle name of both myself and my mother so I thought that was a tradition I could carry on.

My family used to go mad with names, both my mother and father have 4 middle names, all taken from uncles/aunts, so I ended up with no middlenames as they found it a pain having to write them on forms etc.

We gave our son a middle name after my wifes father, as he obviously has my fathers surname. It was not until sometime later we realised his initial are MDF (Morgan David).

Strangely there is no welsh blood in the family (excpet a slightly undercook lamb I ate last Sunday)  ;D

hello ryan,  iam lucky enough to have 6 grown up children, and 8 g, children,my first 5 children, have nice ordanary names, but the last one, we went a bit mad and called him heathcliffe, because i love the name ,and the character.he has grown up {in looks] just like his name, very dark and very hansome, he called his own son heathcliffe, and they have both found their name an advantage, in his teens he had a bit of fun when girls asked his name, the usual answer to heathcliffe was, yes, and i,m cathy,as the kate bush song was popular at the time.but where we live heathcliffe is now accepted as normal, with the two of them growing up here. regards nora T

Nora,

What a lovely story,  and how great that your son loves his unusual name enough to start a family tradition.   ;D

Until my parents generation it wasn't the done thing to give your children Welsh names, so my parents and all their brothers, sisters, cousins, etc. have English names. When it was their turn, Welsh names were just coming back into vogue, hence my brother, my cousins and I all have Welsh names.

However, I moved to Germany about 10 years ago, met and married a German, and last year we had our addition to the family tree. We wanted 2 forenames, but names which both sets of grandparents could pronounce properly, and names which couldn't be shortened. I wanted Welsh names, my wife wasn't too bothered. Another point we had to consider is the dialect in the part of Germany we live in, where the "sp" or "st" sound (e.g. Christopher) is pronounced "schp" or "scht" (giving "Chrischtopher".

We agreed that I would write a list of all the names I liked and my wife chose the ones from the list. It worked well, both sets of gps like the names, can pronounce them and she is the first in the family tree with that name.

To rekindle the old Welsh patronymic tradition, we have also give her the "ap" bit with my forename. (not strictly correct, it should be fch, but that died out of its own accord centuries ago).

If the next one is a boy, we already have the names handy, but are keeping them to ourselves to stop our parents interfering.

Hey guys.
Thank you so much for your replies. All of you have wonderful stories which were exactly the kinds of things which I wanted to hear!

I'm not really sure what I would ideally want to name my children when the day comes, and I'm glad to hear how other people have managed to figure out which names they liked the best.

Hmmm, a daughter. This one I know for sure: I would name a daughter Lily for my maternal Grandmother, Lily Fereday. She's such a wonderful woman who's had a marvellous impact on my life, and I would hope by giving my own child this lovely name that she would inherit some of my Gran's qualities of kindness, compassion and good nature.

I like the names Evan & Luke for boys. Seeing as how my Nan is German it may be interesting to use a German name, like Heidi??

Thanks again for your replies.

Hi All
Nothing so romantic in our family I'am afraid, just a lot of Williams, Ethels,Freds,Lena,Mary,Hellen's etc.
My parents were no more imaginative, Peter, Paul, Susan and John no middle names.
In fact it wasn't until I went to school and the teacher marked the register that I realised my name was Peter, up till then I was thick'un then there was thingy then watsername and whatjacallit.
I used to ask my dad why he bothered to have us baptised as that was the last time they ever used our proper names, he said they had to give us names it looked better when filling in forms and such.
So when our two were born we thought we'd push the boat out a bit and give them middle names, William Frederick, and Mary Helen. :D :D ;)

Nora,

My Dad and Grandad were both called Sydney, and your story reminded me that I was told they were known as 'Big Syd' and 'Little Syd'.  I think my Dad was Little Syd till he was in his 40's.

I love names and tend to think of their meanings as well.  If I had had children, my son would have been called James Winchester Bigland (the Winchester because it was my great great grandfather's middle name and I think it was a shame it didn't become a family tradition) and my daughter would have been called Isobel Catherine Jane.  My close friend Isobel would have been her godmother, Catherine after her grandmother and Irish great-great grandmother, Jane because I like simple, traditional, elegant names.

What names do I not like?  Faddy or "fashionable" names like "Ryan" "Kylie" "Brad" - names that are instantly identifiable with a celebrity.  After all, my mother in law is named after Shirley Temple.

As I have no children, I have to content myself with naming my cats and elbowing in on my mother's naming of her dogs!  But never with human names, other than my two late tomcats, named Gorby and Boris after Mikael Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin.

my eldest son is named after his dad and grandad(dennis),( i then remarried) my second son is named after his grandad( robert david), my third son is named after uncles (benjamin james) and with my twin daughters we just went through the baby names book until we found names we both liked.
(stephanie louise and kathryn annie). but annie was my grandmother's name.

Does anyone else ever wonder what on earth their ancestors were thinking when they named their babies?  I mean, Herbert Roland, who would do that to a tiny baby?  And why name what turns out to be your only little girl - Nellie?  It's a horse's name!

My Grandmother was called Sarah Ann and was called "Sarann" a mixture of her first names.

As a child as was often confused because if she was not called Sarann she was called Sally...........how can this be a short version of Sarah I thought there are still the same number of letters???

I would like to call one of my children Florence after many generations of my family and also a welsh name Geriant for a boy after the Welsh side.

Sarah

P.S I love the name Heathcliffe !

Thomas and Andrew are the 'handed down' names in our family.

I am Aaron Thomas and my brother Jason Andrew.

My son'e middle name is Thomas but we went a bit mad with his first name which is Kyer.

I like Bible names myself.

If I had a girl I would like to have called her Sophia after my illegitimate father's mother. I am trying to find her but it is proving very difficult as she seems to have vanished after having my father. Still it would have been nice as a reminder of her. On second thoughts, my Dad might not have appreciated the idea.

Perhaps if I ever get granddaughters the name may be considered.

Sophia is a beautiful name - I much prefer it to Sophie.  But you can bet your children will probably not give their children names that will thrill you.  Some names sound really weird on babies!  I remember being out once and spotting a mother and baby, and grandmother was talking to the baby, repeating his name over and over:  "Greg! Greg!"    It's such a blokey, adult sort of name.  Really strange on something that sucks a dummy and blows bubbles in a vacant sort of way!   ;D

Hi all,

I have always loved the name Lily,  I would have loved to have called my daughter Lily,  or Rose.  I have always liked the Victorian names,  however her father hated it and so Jessica was the compromise.  I suspect many names are chosen as the compromise.  I hated every name he chose and he hated all mine,  Jessica was the only name we hit upon that neither of us hated.  At the time it was a very unusual name,  now it is very common.

I do like Rose - not Rosie, just Rose.  It's beautiful, simple, elegant, and I think it could suit any kind of woman.   My friend Isobel, she of the phantom god-daughter, occasionally has trouble with people calling her Izzy, but no-one does it twice!!

She's often called Bels.

I like names like Rose, as above, and Jane (not Jayne or Janie, just Jane) because of their elegance and simplicity, but I also like names like Catherine because of their versatility.  Imagine, if you call your daughter Catherine, she can adapt it when she grows up, whether she decides to be a lawyer or a lap-dancer!  Kate, Kitty, Kathy, Kath, Kat, or the full Catherine.

Hello Ryan,

All my children were born before I started to trace my family tree.

My daughter is name after my grandmother on my mother's side, Sarah Jane.  My grandmother's mother's name was also Sarah Jane and her mother also a Sarah but the middle name was Ann.  I have now discovered Sarah Janes' on all branches of the tree.

My eldest son is David Richard, I liked the name David, Richard is his father's name.

My youngest is Thomas Bryan named after my dad.

Anyway to my surprise after tracing my husband's direct line  I discovered a Thomas who had a son called Thomas and David, unfortunately their sister was called Ann and not Sarah.   My husbands last name is not a common name so it is easier to trace then some of the name in the family.

Regards Jacquie.

Hi Jacquie.
Sarah Jane is very nice; two timeless and elegant names. I too like the names Thomas and David, David especially, as that is my maternal Grandfather's name (David Anthony Hopkins). Thomas is quite big in my family. I have many many Great (etc.) Grandfathers named Thomas, as well as a cousin named Thomas.

My hubby has an Aunt Nellie - turns out she's really Ellen Alicia -

Both my girls have their Grandmothers names as second names.

Hubbies G Grandma had girls Lucy, Victoria, Caroline, Ellen, Alice and Mary - all acceptable in my book, then they ran out of steam and named their last daughter ETHEL, can't help feeling sorry for the poor little mite.

Can't say if i'd had a boy that I would have called him Reuban, another common name in the family.

All my ancestors seem to have been very considerate to me and used the standard scottish naming pattern.

1st son father's father
2nd son mother's father
3rd son father's grandfather fraternal
4th son mother's grandfather maternal
5th son father's grandfather maternal
6th son mother's grandfather fraternal
...and then onto the great grandfathers.

and

1st daughter mother's mother
2nd daughter father's mother
3rd daughter mothers grandmother maternal
4th daughter father's grandmother fraternal
5th daughter mothers grandmother fraternal
6th daughter father's grandmother maternal
...and then onto the great grandmothers.

Occasionally using..

1st son father's father
2nd son mother's father
3rd son father
4th son father's oldest brother
5th son mother's oldest brother or alternatively father's next oldest brother
...and so on either alternating father mother or using all father's brothers.

And vice versa for the females.

But this all broke down after my oldest uncle was born.  My nan just stopped using it and my Mum didn't either.  But I'll go back to it kind of, if/when I have kids.

Lilian Violet for the girl which is my Nan and Great Grandmother (whom I knew).  I will let the father name the biy (as long as John gets in there for my granddad!).

My mum isn't happy  so I threatened to call them Tuna Chunks and Economy Burger.

I came across a little girl who has SIX first names!  I think five of the names are flowers so she is Poppy Lily Rose Petunia Daisy Violet or something like that.  Bet you when she's 18 she changes her name by deed poll to just Jane!  And she's got brothers who are all called Gabriel, Dante, Raphael, things like that.

I haven't any children yet, but I've always liked the name Simon (after Simon de Montfort (1208-1265) - yes, crazy medieval historian here!!!).  I'd choose William as a middle name, as it's my father's middle name and was my grandfather's name.

For a girl, I think Elen, Isobel or Leah.  The first because it's a derivative of my grandma's middle name, Helen and also my sister's middle name, Ellen.  Isobel - hmm, not sure, just like the name.  Leah is a name I came across during my family tree research and although not a direct ancestor, I thought it'd be a lovely name for a child.

I think traditional names are less likely to cause a child trouble at school.  They're unobtrusive and give the child a chance to assert his/her personality without having other kids make fun of their name.  I can't see children taking any notice of all the old type names.  They're more likely to pick on a child called Apple than one called Sarah, for example!  At least, I'd hope that would be the case.

I think old type names are making a bit of a comeback, although in my area (poor part of SE England) we have some crazy people naming their kids crazy names.  Poor souls!

Hi Kiya, I did history for my degree - medieval and early modern, hope to do my MA sometime, hopefully before I retire!

I've always been in love with Richard III but don't like the name enough to name a child after him!  (Good thing about being in love with a man who's been dead for over 500 years is, you don't have to meet his parents!)

I completely agree - don't like faddy names, or even fashionable names, but like good, classical names.  I can't really have much respect for someone that burdens a child with a ludicrous name, that it can't do much about until it's 18, by which time it's too late.

I read that in France, you can't have just any name you like, there's a list you have to choose from.  Still at least it means you don't find your 13 year old introducing you to her French penpal, Pomme!

No, can't remember the surname, but it's a real little girl, not out of a book.  I do like the idea of giving children 3 forenames, in the hope that they'll like at least one of them and use it.  My friend was called Charlotte Isobel, but called Isobel to avoid confusion with her aunt.

I have a young cousin called Reuben.  And another called Jacob.  Luckily my cousins are into continuing the family line, whereas I'll stick with cats.  If it's got 4 paws and a tail it's a friend of mine!

Me too!  I got into Cardiff to study for an MA in Medieval History, turned it down and ended up working in the NHS!!  No, it didn't make sense to me either.

I know of several people who love Richard III and one who is madly in love with Llywelyn ap Gruffydd!

Trying to get back on topic... I know of a boy who've been given what I'd consider traditionally female name: Staci.

My children are called Patrick and Flora.  They should count themselves extremely lucky they weren't born when I was twenty when I wanted to call my kids Fanny and Angel (the last for a boy - after Angel Clare in 'Tess of the D'urbevilles').  That said my daughter, who is six, wants to change her name to Bethany or Clare.  I told her she will be glad to have  a classier name when she is older and that she is named after the goddess of the flowers.  At the moment this isn't convincing her!

I read that in France, you can't have just any name you like, there's a list you have to choose from.

Its the same in Germany unless you can prove that the name is a proper name in another country. I had no problem with the name Carys (for my daughter that is).

When I married my wife, we were given a "Stammbuch". Thats an A5 sized folder with all the family details in such as date of marriage, birth of children, their marriages etc. For any official formwork, a copy of the relevant pages are usually required. The advantage of this book is similar to a family bible, but everyone has one. I don't know how long this has been a requirement, but I've been able to follow my wifes family back a couple of generations without any problems at all. But I digress now. If anyones interested, I can explain a bit further, but I'm off on hols on Thursday, so it will have to be after I come back.

When I was 16, my then girlfriend and I, very much in love at the time, in that way only teenagers can be, found she was pregnant. A bit shocked but over the moon, we decided to wait before telling anyone. Sadly, soon after, she lost the baby. It was before she had begun to show so noone else knew, and one thing led to another and we split up. About 14 years later we started talking again. In the mean time she had married and has a lovely little boy and I got married too and have a cat and a dog. A couple of years ago we reminiced about what it would have been like if the little one had made it into this world and it was all very emotional. Then she told me a little story that blew me away. She had been to see a clairevoyant. She, unprompted, told her not to worry about the girl with a flowers name, that she is fine and with her granny who loves flowers. Not really knowing what she meant, my ex went home to find in her garden, that all her Lillies had gone. When she told me, I explained that my Mum, who died when I was little, although not a keen gardener, absolutely loved flowers. Maybe a bit silly I suppose but from then on whenever we spoke of the baby that never made it, we have referred to her as Lily, and that she is with my Mum.
So, I suppose if I ever have a girl it would have to be Lily.

The Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799,  and deciphered in 1822.  The Victorians seemed fascinated by ancient Egypt,  maybe that is why.

I named my son after my birth mother's surname (Russell).

I  apparently was named after two nurses in the hospital were I was born. After counselling at the age of 58 I finally obtained a copy of my original birth certificate and discovered I still have these two names although I have always used my second name as my adoptive mother who took me over from the age of 2 months didn't like my first name (Patricia) and insisted everyone called me Jean. I will never know why she never gave me a new name as adoptive parents usually do.

Thanks for that info Kazza ;D

I hadn't heard of the Rosetta Stone so must check it out.

A thought - do you think Rosetta and the rest of the Shepherds set off for ancient Egypt? It would account for why they all disappered from England. :P

Jean - I think it's lovely that you called your son after your birth mother - and I like Patricia Jean - it's a pretty name ;D

Ooooh Norah! Is Big Heathcliffe spoken for? Asks she old enough to be his Mother......Wuthering Heights is my most favorite novel after Jane Eyre. So it's a toss up between Heathcliffe and Edward.

I was going to call my daughter Davina, but then put a lot of names in a hat, and my little niece picked out two, Julie Ann, so that is what I named her much to her relief as she hates Davina, and I must say it wouldn't have suited her a bit.  Have you noticed how names either suit or don't suit people.  Some people look like a John or James, other's don't.   Can you imagine Grannies in their eighties being called Sky, Scarlette, or Tiger Lily?
What are these young parents thinking of.  I think the most unfortunate name I have come across in my research is John Thomas !  Now that speaks for itself.

When we got married and had our children, I named the first one Leanne Marie, hubby named the second one, David John, but we couldn't agree on the third child, a girl, hubby liked Sarah Jane and I liked Sarah Louise, so we compromised and she is called Sarah Jane Louise.

I have found that all 3 names are in both sides of the family - being my side and hubby's. We didn't work it that way, just the way it worked out.

Then again when I actually have children I'll probably name them something totally different.

Hi Jan,

Zipporah is a very common Jewish name and the english translation is Deborah.  Zipporah is in the bible I think in the hebrew bible which is christian Old Testament. And the pp is pronouned like ff and the emphasis is on the ff too. so if you were saying it in hebrew its sounds like......seff-oor-wa.  So looks like you got some jewish in there.  By the way, I've got a convict ancestor I've yet to trace back to Shrewsbury in Shropshire.  Her name was Hannah or Ann Simmons or Simmens.

Lisa

I called my daughter Charlene Marie and my son Daniel Mark, none of those names appear in my side as I'm dutch descent. My son was going to be called Phillip John Alexander of which John Alexander is carried on on his father's side but we split up when I was 4 months preggies so I changed it to what I liked.

My daughter has called her daughter Natascha (Russian spelling) Jannigje (Dutch), her middle name  means Jane in english, she is pregnant with her 2nd one and is hoping to continue the Alexandra or Alexander tradition on from my side, it's my middle name and my uncle's first name but it was not a name that has been passed on. Most common names were Anton or Heinrich and
Gertruida or Gertrude. I sometimes think my g daughter should've been called Gertrude as my daughter keeps calling her that.

My cousin has just had a daughter and called her Esther and her son is called Sander, dunno how they came up with those names.

We had a tradition going in my family for a few generations.  My great-great grandmother was Mina (Actually Almina but ALWAYS called Mina), she named her dau. Leta who in turn named her dau. Mina who in turn named her dau. Leta.  That last one is in my generation, born in 1930's and she did Not name her dau. Mina as she should have to keep it going.  Seems in the mid 1900's people became less interested in tradition and family.  My gggd-father was Enoch and one of his son's (Named Solon another family name) in turn named His son Enoch.  I would have named my son that if I'd ever had one.  I like old fashioned names or very English ones.  A girl would have been Bronwyn Meghan Elizabeth.  I have a friend here who only came from London 2 years ago to marry a local lady and he has said he wants their first girl also to be Bronwyn.  I have also seen it spelled Bronwin but he and I both like it w/the y.  Their son is called Owen Antony, not Anthony.    I find I have a lot of trouble in my searches 'cause so often  the same common first name was given to sons by several brothers who wanted to honer their father.  So Which David Hill,John Jenkins, is Mine?  Keeping the generations stright w/names like that is hard too.    A question here.  On my birth cert. I have a middle name, on my bapt. cert I have the middle name And a saint's name, is the Saint's name on the bapt. cert. part of my Legal name or is legal name only what is on birth cert.?

I would have named my sons after their grandfathers but Norman and Arthur seemed too cruel for kids of the 90's (no offence to any Normans or Arthurs out there).

Oddly enough one of my sons has a friend called Arthur (he's 8). Arthur's younger sister is called Edith and these names have grown on me.

I didn't set out to name my sons after any of my ancestors but number one son has the same first name as his ggggrandfather and number two son has his gggrandfather's name as his middle name.

I called my second son Sean because it was what I would have been called had I been male. My mum hates it but she was prepared to accept that because Dad's first suggestion was Seamus Patrick!

My eldest son was named (his first name) after a great uncle who died a month before he was born STEPHEN his middle name was suppose to be AUGUSTUS but the registrar recorded it as AUGUST, he was baptised with AUGUSTUS though.
My youngest has his father's middle name PETER, and yet again we went mad with the middle ones calling him SEPTIMIUS, I do hope they appreciate it when they get older.

Naming kids is really difficult, because often family members feel that they have a right to offer their opinions, or feel put out if you choose to call your child after another relative.

I called my first son Jamie Lee, not necessarily after Ms Curtis but because it could be used for a boy or girl.  When it came to registering him my husband insisted that we register him as James so that he can choose when he is older.  I wasn't researching my tree at the time but have since found we have several James' in the past.

My second son is Ashley Mark, we rarely call him Ashley and would have just registered him as Ash, but again felt that it should be his choice.  I have also found a Mark in the family tree in the last year.

If he had been a girl I wanted to call him Lucy Clare after my great gran and my sister in law.

My girls are Sarah Marie, Clare Elizabeth and Laura Ellen.  Their middle names are after grandmother's and great-grandmothers.

If I had a boy I would of loved to call him Mick or Jack, I think they sound very strong.

I feel sorry for children when there parents give them funny names that no one has every heard of.  Friends of mine just had a baby girl and I had to have him repeat himself about 3 times before I could say it properly and I still couldn't tell you right now what is was for sure.

My three girls are called Gayle Elizabeth (the Elizabeth after both her grandmothers), Erin and Robyn.

Erin & Robyn are twins and at the time we were convinced it would be 2 boys or a boy and a girl. We had chosen Erin and possibly Gareth or Gavin for a boy (or both for two boys) but couldn't decide on a second girl's name. We ploughed through every 'naming book' we could find but nothing really appealed. It's bad enough picking out one or two names but when you have to cover umpteen options, anyone with twins (or more) will tell you -  it's a bit of a nightmare.

It was almost 'D-day' and I happened to be watching a programme on TV about Fred Astaire whose wife was called Robyn . . . . and the rest is history.

This was 21 years ago and unlike now, there were'nt very many Erins or Robyns about then!!!

You've probably guessed that we didn't even consider middle names!

Naming children is such a difficult task, first you have to think of names you like and which will suit a child throughout its life, then names which fit with your surname and initials. Then you inevitably think of people you associate with that name and that can strenthen your like or dislike of it. Then you think of all the other reasons why you should or shouldnt give your child that particular name..........
We spent hours thinking of names for our two 'lumps' and often shouted out names as if calling children in the park - just to see how it sounded !
We both liked Kathryn / Catherine but realised it would be shortened and I like Kathryn /Kate, husband like Catherine / Cathy. Stalemate as we both liked the full name but hated the shortened version.
Boys names were no trouble we both wanted Richard David.
Two weeks before our first daughter was born my friend from ante-natal visited with her baby named James and we had James Taylor playing on the record player. We commented on James being married to Carly Simon and how much we liked both of their music when my husband and I looked at each other and both said 'Carly'. Carly loves her name, it was very unusual in 1980 and not too popular now. She finds it useful in her profession as she is instantly recognisable and has always loved it - I always feel sorry when people say they hate their name.
Second daughter gained from the research done the first time ! my husband was reading out names and said 'Heather', we both loved the name and the implication of strength and Heather she was. She also loves her name and loved the fact she was the only one at school etc.
I wasnt obsessed with family history at the time but if I had been I may have chosen more traditional names with family association but I think my daughters are glad we chose their names.

My first child, a boy, was named Tomas Emilio. Tomas after my grandfather and several other ancestors, but spelt the Spanish way as my husband is originally Spanish. Emilio is after his father and grandfather.

My three daughters are Ines May, Olivia Estefania and Isabel Esther. Their first names were traditional names we liked and which are pronouced the same in Spanish and English. Their middle names are from their great grandmothers.

I like it when all the children in the family have names of a similiar 'genre'. such as all traditional English names, all victorian names, all trendy names or all biblical names, somehow it just seems to sound better. I don't like it when phoenetically a name is the same as one you know but the parents have thought of some way out spelling believing it is different, I think they just make it difficult for the child and everybody else.

We have seven children and thirteen grandchildren. All the children have traditional names.......one after my mum,an aunt etc.The only name that was unusual at the time was Nancy and she was named because for our first date we went to see Oliver!

Our grandchildren have beautiful names too after family members etc..........the only unusual one is Monty.........but he is so wonderful and looks like his name.

I think even if you choose names when you are expecting babies you quite often change your mind after their birth.
We chose Nancy for our second daughter but she didn't look like a Nancy.......she looked like a Kate..............so she was called Catherine............a name we hadn't contemplated but it turns out to be in the family anyway!!

My daughter has a friend who wants to call her daughter Remee...............reminds me of the brandy!!......so I'm not too keen on that...............another younger friend of mine called her children  Blake and SammyJo..........if you weren't fans of Dynasty it will mean nothing!!!!!

Whilst looking on the 1881 census today in order to help someone else.........I found a Head of Household (female divorcee) with the name Mourning!!! perhaps her parents wanted a son!!

When I had my first child I hadn't thought of any girls names as I was so sure it would be a boy, so when my daughter was born 10 years to the day the my beloved Grandmother Catharine died I called her Catherine Margaret. Catherine after my grandmother, and Margaret after the eldest of my Dad's 10 sisters.
My second daughter was called Hanna-James Nivek after my Dad, James who had died a year before. But she finds that most people call her Hannah, which she hates, when she was younger she hated the name James but now doesn't mind because its different, but is usually just called Hanna.
My third daughter was called Sinead Danielle,I loved the Irish name and it made me feel closer to my Irish heritage.
And Danielle because her sister liked that name best.

I have two children Christine Lillian and Robert Cameron, my husband picked out the names when I was expecting Christine. On sunny summer day my mum and I were sitting outside with the baby book of names and reading off very different names. At that point we had not come up with any names we agreed on. After my parents left I stayed outside and my husband disappeared for a while when he came back he said look at the beginning of the girls names and look at the beginning of the boys names I have picked names out.  The interesting think is that I had mentioned Christine before and my husband said no. When we were expecting again we kept the name Robert Cameron and decided on Marie Louise if it was a girl.  I agreed to Robert as long as he was not called Bob or Bobbie!  So it was Robert it was not till he was about 16 that he started being called Rob.  Christine is still called Christine her name did not get shortened. In fact once when she was about  5 or 6 she was at the dr.'s and we saw a locum and the first thing he said when he came in the room was how are you Chrissy???  Christine looked at him and said my name is Christine.

If I had another daughter I would have like to name her Anglea Kathleen just like those two names.

If and when I ever have kids I'd call a girl Isabella Amy after 2 gr gr gr aunts who were teachers (I'm at uni doing my teacher training!) and for a boy, I'm not sure about a first name but middle names would be George and Bradley.  George is a 'passed down' name on my dads side but came a halt when my mum and dad had 2 girls and my aunt had no kids and Bradley because that is my surname and obviously the line will be stopped now as no son's were born.  I'd also like to use Featherstone as a middle name as I had a great x4 granddad called Featherstone, he was supposedly illigitimate until I found his birt cert with Featherstone as his father.  Quite unusual I think.
I do like the more traditional names such as James, Thomas, Charlotte, Lucy.

I don't understand these 'modern' names either, I have friends with a son called Chilli and have come across Ice-Maiden, Fury and Skylark on my teaching practice.  What were their parents taking?!

I heard some unusual names recently, at least unusual to me, twin girls named Diaz and Brinnly(I've spelt it pheonetically) anf they have an older sister named Remeny.

I haven't found any unusual names in the family tree yet, it seems people are much more inventive these days. there are so many Georges and Williams on all branches that I often get confused, I get ecstatic when I find a Charles or Samuel!

When my parents were naming us, they made a consious effort not to use family names and came up with these....

Nicolette Francesca.... Lovely but I have no idea where it came from,
Vincent De Paul.... all well and good except that here in Australia we have the St. Vincent de Paul society, who help the poor.
Tina-Louise Marie.... Louise is actually our father's mother's middle name, she was just going to be called Tina (which means tiny) but Grandma was worried that she might turn out to be a giant, hence the hyphen.
and me Hilary Yvonne.... Yvonne is our mother's mothers first name.

When I was pregnant with my daughter I wanted to choose a name that hubby and I were happy with whether it have family connections or not...
My mother insisted that we use something... anything that was from our family tree.
We also spent time going through the names book which was not much help... we didn't agree on many names and ended up with two choices for a girls name ... Sarah Louise and Stephanie. We never decided on a boy's name.
We didn't make a final decision untill she was born and hubby first held her and said 'Hello Sarah'

Before I was born, my mother had decided to name me Mark.  After I was born, she decided that "I didn't look like a Mark," and named me Philip because "Sir Philip would sound good if I ever got a knighthood."  Sorry, mum - no chance of that!

My middle name is John, after my dad's brother.  Much more fortunate than my wife and her sisters, who are named after aunts and grandparents - none of them like their middle names which are Augusta, Beatrice and Hortensia.

For our children, we decided on "safe" saints' names - Catherine and Christopher.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's name stories.  My parents were not at all concerned with family names for our first names.  Actually - I'm surprised they came up with any names at all considering my dad's now-famous List of Rules for naming children (it has become a bit of a family joke).

1.  No names that could be shortened to nicknames my parents didn't like.
2.  First name cannot rhyme with surname.
3.  First name cannot have the same number of syllables as surname.
4.  No names of former students that have bad memories associated with them (my parents were both teachers)
5.  No common names (ie: Ann, Sarah, John, etc...)
6.  No "fad" names (don't know what they were at the time, but I'm sure Dad had a list!)
7.  No obvious famous people names (Martha Stewart was not around at the time!)
8.  No names where the spelling is not obvious
9.  No "made up" names (of the Chilli and Skylark variety, mentioned above)

You get the idea - I'm sure there were other rules as well.  Luckily they went with family names for our middle names or we might never have gotten named!  So, what was the result you ask?  Well, I am Martha Jane and my brother is Neil George.  Not too bad in the end!

Imagine, if you call your daughter Catherine, she can adapt it when she grows up, whether she decides to be a lawyer or a lap-dancer!  Kate, Kitty, Kathy, Kath, Kat, or the full Catherine.

Oh this did make me smile, my mum and my eldest daughter picked my second daughter's name - Katie, I asked my mum is it to be Catherine or just Katie and it was to be Katie. My mum died seven weeks before my daughter was born and when I registered her birth I gave her my mothers first name Ivy as her last middle name. Ironicly my mother and her cousins were all named with the initials IJK and my daughter's are KJI.

My grandmother liked the name Ivy as it was short and couldn't be shortened - or so she thought, my cousins and my dad all called her aunty I and I.

I have a distant cousin in my tree who was born after his father died & so was named Postumous! I thought at first it was a temporary description till they thought of a name for him, but he lived to a good age & even his will is in the name of Postumous LONG.  :D

I've just come across a new line in my family (courtesy of the 1851!), so I have no doubt that any future male child will have to be christened Wilson Tiffin Etherington - it has such a ring about it, while still managing to be faintly ludicrous. :)

I was going mad when looking at my family tree and seeing the same old names coming up over and over again and I narrowed it down to about 10. "Did these people have no imagination" I moaned to my son. He then pointed out that 3 of those 10 names I had given to him and his brother. So now who has no imagination!!!

If I did have children (bit late now at 40!) I would like to have called a son, Sylvan.  I found this name popped up a few times in my Harmer line in Sussex and I rather like it!!!

In the same line I found a girl called Augusta and I quite like that, although some might say a little pretentious!

Hi again Kerry,
I like both those names and they make a nice change from the Johns, Williams, Mary Annes etc. Last night I found an Eleanor Blossom in the family tree. Glad that one didnt come down the family line.
I had my daughter at 41 by the way so 40 is not too old. Bit tiring though!!!!

In one particular branch of my family I have a Thomas Crampton whose father was also Thomas and he married a Margaret Crampton (yes that was her maiden name too) whose father was also Thomas and who had a brother Thomas. Oh yes and they called one of their son's Thomas too ::)

Simply too many Thomases ;D

My eldest is Arron Damian - Arron because it was the only name we could agree on and Damian as my other half is adopted and his birth name was Damian.
Then we had a daughter and decided the name was going to Emily Mia Jade ( I couldn't chose between Mia and Jade so had both) but after several weeks of Arron trying his best to say Emily but it coming out clearly more like Emma, the name stuck and we called her Emma (Arron was only 21 months old when she was born after all!)
Next we had Connor Liam Thomas - I have Irish ancestors and we both wanted a celtic name so hence Connor, liam is Arron's best friend and Thomas was my beloved grampy who died in 1990 when I was just 12 years old.
Lastly we have Oliver Philip Joseph Jones - Oliver is just such a cute name we couldn't pick another, Philip after his daddy, Joseph after me (well we couldn't call him Joanne plus Joseph is my best friends nickname for me!) and Jones as this is my mum's maiden name, the surname of my beloved grampy that I mentioned above.  We picked 3 middle names for Oliver as he is definately our last baby and we wanted a child to be named after us (to have another baby could kill me - or it very well might kill my other half!!!  Just to make sure at my suggestion he had a vasectomy a few weeks ago lmao!)

I do love this topic, as I love names. My family is chockful of Williams, Marys, Margarets, Thomases, Jameses, and we have a bunch of Leos thrown in for good measure.

My husband is Jewish and the Jewish tradition is to use at least the first letter of someone who has passed away. I like the idea of a name having family meaning, so my son was to get the middle name of my husband's paternal grandfather. I argued for the first name to be Irish, to represent my background, so he was dubbed Liam Murray (which made my dad happy, thinking he was named after him--William). When my daughter came along I didn't think I would get my Irish name, as I wanted the middle name to be after my maternal grandmother. Alas, I didn't like any name that went with Marian, so I got my little Molly, and used Mae as a middle name, which honored my grandmother (the M), my great aunt Margaret Mae (MarMae), who was a great lady, and my husband's maternal grandmother, Mae. If she was a boy, she was to be Aidan Gilbert (the Gilbert for my husband's father, who died the year before).

My family are full of Henrys, Arthurs and Edwards.  I did inherit the Edward as a middle name.

We decided to call our son Phillip Daniel, just because we liked both names.  Strangely, in my tree (over 1700 entries), I do not have a single Phillip or Daniel in there.

My son is Daniel and we thought he was the first in the family with that name, but I have found at least 2 in the family in the 19th century. And we thought we were being so original and getting away from family names.

I have some weird and wonderfull names in my family tree that I am glad to say that myself, or my siblings did not inherit. HORACE!
My eldest son was named after his Great Grandfather ANTON, my youngest son after both his Grandfathers JOSEPH JOHN.
My other children were not named after anybody, but when I started my family tree and found my G G Grandmothers name KATERINA, which is my eldest daughters name .
Others children son... Connor, Daughters LORETTA, and JESSICA.
Have run out of names to pick from now, so will just stop at the 6 children I have, Lol

Am I alone in liking the fact that nearly all of my ancestors seem to have had the same names? Or just lucky in that the Scottish Naming Pattern has made things easier for me  :)

Leagan, you asked about registered names and baptismal names, I have the same instance - registered one thing and christened another -and I believe that the legal name is the one on your birth certificate.

My daughter is called Isabel Alexandra, I wanted Alexandra and her father wanted Isabel. My grandmother was Isobel (as is my missing from birth certifcate christened name) so I agreed but wanted it spelt with an 'o'. My husband is German and objected on the grounds 'that people in Germany would think he couldn't spell'.  Just before she was born, I was in a shop and noticed some 'name' mugs. 'Oh look' I said 'they have spelt Isabel incorrectly on that mug, they've spelt it with 2 L's'. 'No that's correct' he said 'in Germany Isabell is spelt Isabell'.  'Oh no' said I, 'people will think ...'

I was thrilled when I started doing genealogy to discover that Isabel's

5G Grandmother was Isabella Barney married George Millar, Dundee 1790
3G Grandmother was Isabella Meldrum married James Lindsay, Rattray 1839
6G Aunt was Isabella Glen born 1808, Campsie
3G Aunt was Isabella Gibson born 1895, Cadder
7G Aunt was Isobel Glen born 1761, Luss
GGrandmother was Isobel Lindsay born 1900, Glasgow
4G Aunt was Isobell Meldrum born 1799, Wemyss

She is the first Alexandra but again previously unknown to me, she has over 20 Alexander relations, must be genetic memory :)

Incidentally re: names in Germany, they actually will not allow you to register a child by an ambiguous first name, gender must be clear from the name....  also re: the post on Nellie and horse's names and someone wanting to have a Heidi, the Swiss will tell you that Heidi is a cow's name  :P

I have a 16 week old son named Alexander John. My gf John died when I was three and I vowed if I ever had a son his mn would be John. Hubby wanted Jonty(!) but I wouldn't budge. We chose Alexander because we liked it, but there are several Alexanders on both sides of our trees (Scottish heritage), and my other grandfather's father and grandfather were both John Alexander. This grandfather died a month before I became pregnant so it was a nice coincidence.

There is a little tradition in my family that I hope to keep going. My mother's middle name Rae is after her grandfather Ray, and mine is Lyn after my recently deceased grandfather Lindsay. So if we ever have a daughter her middle name will be Grace after her grandfather (my dad) Graham.

Me and my Mum should have both been Eva as my gm, ggm, and gggm were all Eva's. If we have a second daughter (and I am getting WAY ahead of myself here!!!) we would like to resurrect the name as hubby also has several Eva's in his family, including a ggm who is still going strong at 103!

Most of the names in my tree are fairly standard, but I have come across Sybella, which I really like. Unfortunately hubby hates it.

I like the idea of using family names, but only if I really like them and would consider them even if there was no family link. The Arthurs, Normans, and Gwendas of hubby's family will never get a look in!!

Kez :)

Bit scared myself of the walking and talking bit. Like the fact that if I put him down at the moment he stays where I put him!

He still does look "fresh" even at 16 weeks. Still got that little bit of baby fuzz on the back of his head and he is still smaller than my brother was at birth!

I would have named my sons after their grandfathers but Norman and Arthur seemed too cruel for kids of the 90's (no offence to any Normans or Arthurs out there).

Wotty.

My Dad is John Norman - always called Norman - and I absolutely refused to name my son Norman.  ;D  I dont much like John either - too boring & way overused.

Since my hubby is French, and his fathers names were Lionel Philippe, we ended up naming our little boy Jean-Philippe. (changed the John to Jean). But he's ALWAYS been known as J-P  ;D

A lovely French-Canadian Name.  Easy to pronounce and acceptable to all grandparents. :)   Except when an English speaker asks for Gene Philippa!!!  LOL

If we ever have a daughter she would be called Catherine Therese :)

I love Catherine with a C, and Therese is my MIL's middle name.

My son is named after his dad but i spelled it the irish way
his dad is Kieran my son is Ciaran, now for his second name, i named him after his dads dad shortened and made irish William =Liam and lastly his confirmation name is after my father James (not changing it to the irish though which is Seamus.)

so he is Ciaran Liam James. and his father and i never married and are no longer together so he has my maiden name as a surname now thats gonna be fun and games in the future for any family tree researcher. Im just going to have to make sure i write it all down.

Anne

God I hate Robyn.  :(   Its MY name!!!  And I'm well over 30 years old.   :)

I grew up being called Christopher Robin, Cock Robin, Robin Redbreast and Robin Hood - all boys spellings.

So when I left school I made a slight change. Now I am known as ROBYNNE!!!    Thats how I spell it for everything thats NOT legal. :)
Even trained my family to use this spelling too.

Did you know that with Robin being a girls name in USA, they are now naming their BOYS as Robyn??? ??? ??? ???

Its really weird to see the spelling and I usually have to ask is this a boy or a girl??

My Maternal grandparents named their son and daughter after them. Doris and Alfred (how original is that). when my mother married my father guess what the names of his parents were? You guessed it Doris and Alfred. Luckily my paternal grandfather was known as Frank.

none of the descendent's on either side of the family have carried on the tradition. all the grandchildren have original names.

I'm only young but i've had names chosen for my future kids for years!  Phoebe Rosanna (Phoebe after my great nan, Elizabeth Phoebe, her nan was Phoebe aswell, and I just love the name (big fan of Friends :D ) and Rosanna after my nan on my fathers side and my eldest Sister).  I want a daughter called Irene Ellen aswell!  It is my mothers name, and it was my great aunties name.  My middle name is also Irene.  I've always loved the name Seamus for a boy - my dad was always called it when he lived in Ireland.  Seamus Edward (after the million Edwards in my family history).

My parents (although they have 10 children, only one child has had kids) were disappointed when out of 5 boys, none of them were named James after their father and grandfather!  Come to think of it, only one of the children was named after relatives.

I adore the names Evelyn (or Eveline), Iris, Benjamin, Baden and my own name, Jemma, but I don't think I'll be having as many children as my parents!

Well we decided to name our children with names that weren't anywhere in the family. So eldest son became Gareth Antony, then there was Hayley Marie and last but not least was Lee Peter James (the Peter James after hubby as we knew his name wouldn't be carried on elsewhere and we only used Lee as his name anyway)

Then I started my Family research and you guessed it - We have 3 Gareths, 4 Hayleys and 7 Lees

Oh well so much for originality in the family. Gareth has 3 sons and their names are after his Dad, Grandfather and Uncle so we are back to the naming tradition again. Hopefully hayley and Lee will have names that we haven't got anywhere in the family

Naming a dog does tend to put you off a name quite quickly doesn't it Erin?

I always liked the name Benjamin but then my brother in law called his mongrel Benji and whenever I heard the name all I could see was this scruffy long haired dog running at you with it's tongue hanging out

So that name was scrapped pretty soon after that

I am a nurse and I work with children. What drives me nuts is when parents make up names or cobble 2 names together, and then glare at me if a. I cant pronounce them and b. cant guess what sex their child is.
Recently I got one called Riva, easy to pronounce but what sex? Then Tyree, any guesses?

i would have thought Jayden was a girl, lol, but it seems no one can decide if it belongs to a boy or girl...

1. Name:Jayden
Gender: (male)
Origin:   American
Meaning: God has heard

2. The boy's and girl's name Jayden is related to Jadon. Jayden is a rare male first name as it was not ranked for males of all ages in the 1990 U.S. Census.

3.
Jayden
Most Popular Baby Names
In 2004, the name Jayden was ranked #62

another site says that if you spell it Jaydon its a boy and Jayden could be boy or girl! so confusing.

Genealogists should band together and lobby our parliamentarians to have a law passed that children be removed from the (lack of) care of parents who would give them either unpronounceable or bisexual (asexual) names.

Children are people too!, and don't deserve to be the butt of their parents private jokes.

Hi

My mother gave all 11 of us first, middle, last names. except me I got 2 middle.

One of my middle names was my mother's sister Emma's 1st name and
my grand-daughter's Charlotte's middle name is Emma after me.

My hubby's middle name is his father's 1st name.

Our sons middle names 2 each are
Son (No 1) after my hubby's father and my hubby's mother's brother.
Son (No 2) after my hubby and my nephew.

Cheers Sandy

Thats a big strong seno  :) and a bit of a waste of tax payers money, I think they would be better sticking to the lack of care and child abuse rather than taking a child of someone because they happen to have called the child a name that isnt politically correct or to someone elses liking.

What a fascinating thread!  Names have been a touchy subject round here :)

My 3 are:

Miranda Jeanne - Miranda because it was the one and only  name her father liked.  Jeanne suggested by my Dad after his sister.  It was a good suggestion, because her father was holding out for Miranda Alison, Alison after his sister, and I thought that was too much of a mouthful.

Alastair James - the one with the most connection to family names.  Alastair after guess who - his Aunt Alison Ann -  who in turn was named after her GGgrandmother Alicia Annie.  James is from 1) my grandfather James Willard Smith, 2) his grandmother's maiden name, and of course 3) GGGgrandfather James, who was at  the Eureka Stockade.

Campbell Grant - like father Lachlan and brother Alastair, he had to have a name indicating his Scottish heritage .. of course this was before I started on the inlaws,  I have only traced them as far back as Cumberland :)   Grant is from the bottle of Grant's whisky Lachlan used to sterilize his hands before coming to play catch, because Cam was not waiting for any trip to hospital  :o

Tis one of the worse forms of child abuse, one with which they will have to live with for their whole lives.

If one is " (in  any sense) abused" as a child, though I do not condone this, the child may in time "get over it' and live a reasonable life. Whereas if one is given a stupid name. that person will spend the rest of their life explaining their gender, or why they have such an odd name. It's somewhat akin to having "Kick me" stapled to your coat tails for life.

By no means fatal, but a source of constant annoyance to the owner, and some minor amusement to those about them.

Relax a bit Collette, a sense of humour is not without benefit in this case.

Hi Lindsay i didnt know it had gone   ;D.

Oh boy Oh boy

"Tis one of the worse forms of child abuse",

You think?.... Im sure little Ann or James (common girl and boy names used as an example) would rather have been called something horrible than suffer the attentions of a REAl  sadistic Parent or adult.

But hey sure thay can get over it and live a normal life not like a poor child with an absurd or bisexual, asexual name. heaven forbid these poor kids have to live with these names for ever.  ::)

There is always deed poll.

Sorry but i lose my sense of humour on this subject.

Elizabeth as a middle name is the tradition in the family carried on by my Granddaughters-this name has been in our direct line since mid 1700's -all of my female cousins have this middle name - the eldest having it as a forname.
Could have been worse - Fanny is also a way back family name -one of my ancestors being called Fanny Urine- occasionally spellt without the e
Now that naming is child abuse!!!!!!

Fed up with being just another Linda in the 60's ,I decided when I had children they would have distinctive names.
My daughters are called Fleur-Justine and Toni-Mairi .
They enjoyed people knowing who they were just by their first names and continued with this new 'Family Tradition' by calling their children ,Elaura-Morgan ,Ellis Caleb,Euan Zachariah,Charlotte Olivia and finally our dear little Malachi .
They won't be hard to find on Census' 100 years from now  ;) ;)

P.S the grandchildren are known in the family as Lollie , Mole ,Euee ,Lottie and Mucky Pie.

A very interesting thread, it has kept me busy for a time reading through it all. My eldest has the first name of Donna (which was popular when she was born) and as it happens has the first three letters of my name and the whole of her mothers name spelt backwards (Don & Ann) which was pointed out by one of her "new" aunt's at the time. She has named all of her children with unrelated names to the family as she did not want someone saying that she had named a child after them. I was given my fathers name and for years when ever we visited Scottish relations it was always big Donald and wee Donald. My father died in 1991 but I am still known by some in my family as wee Donald (In truth I think that I would miss being called this even though I am now in my early 50's).

Our youngest is Cameron James and was picked only when we had been asked by the midwife what his name was so that she could fill in his birth record form moments after his birth. HE was going to be a SHE or so we thought and we had really only picked a girls name (Jessica Elizabeth) but as soon as we looked at him he straight away became Cameron James.

Hi, my name initially had nothing to do with family history, although I have found 2 or 3 Anna's since on both of my grandfathers and one of my grandmother's lines but I thank my lucky stars I wasn't born a boy as I would have been either John Richard or Richard John I can't remember which, my Kennedy line (which is my surname) bought an unusual firstname line to light when my dad dabbled in a little bit of familyhistory in the 50's when he was in his teens, from the furthest back I know of the direct Kennedy males are as thus

John

David

Richard

David

John

David

John James

David

so if I had been Richard John my sister would have been John Richard making our first names way too similar in my view.

It was traditional for my uncles family to name the first son Sam.The day came when there was Grandad Sam,son Sam and then son of Sam ??? They solved the problem by calling themselves burnt, medium and rare Sam!! ;D
I have 2 children.Thomas William...named Tom because we liked the name and William after Granfathers on both sides.
My daughter is Emily-Grace .Grace after an elderly aunt now in her 90's who could never have children. She would always have a smile from ear to ear...and the name Grace makes me feel all warm inside.....my little Emily Grace is also a great smiler!!
Since tracing back the family I have found that there are hundreds of Thomas's and Williams!!! 8)
It seems customary for kids now to abreviate their names to just initials...ie. Tom is called TW and Emily-Grace is known as M. ;D

I agree with Happyhunter and wish that more people had used mother's maiden name as a middle name.

I am Ellen (after Court grandmother) and Margaret, after my maternal, Bennett, grandmother.  She was actually registered and baptised "Maggie" but my parents thought I might not thank them for that!

Our daughters are Elizabeth Clare (called Clare) mostly because we like the name but also husband's grandmother was Clara; and Frances (coincidentally husband's other grandmother) Ellen, to keep it going.

Our grandaughter has the middle name Brooke which is to feminise the Brooks which my husband and his father were given as middle names after the aforesaid Frances Brooks.

Our grandson's middle name is Robert after his grandfather g-gfather and g-g-gfather!

I must admit that I too am a great admirer of the old practice of using the Grand parents names and maiden names, as middle names for children.

We have family members who have followed this tradition, however I did not because I was not aware of how far it went back in my family when my children were born.

Dear Spike, thank you for recognising that I am a sensitive soul, not a common occurrence  ;D Yes, you are right that it is unforgivable to belittle a child, perhaps 'they' did not realise or intend that ... pm me if you like ...

I have to say, re your last posting, that I have been very happy with the SNP (Scottish Naming Pattern) although I know from other posts (on the Scottish boards on RC) how much a problem it has been for others ..... actually I think like you that it is a pity - that my generation, at least within my family, seems to have been the last! Still (if anybody has read my earlier post on this thread?) I am quite happy that unbeknownst to me, I named both my children for 'family'.

Ihave enjoyed this thread. My eldest was given a Welsh name, it had to be one I could pronounce without murdering it so he is called Gareth. He has the same middle name as his father and grandfather - Morgan - which is great grannies maiden name.

My daughter is Claire because this is what Gareth called her from the minute he knew I was pregnant and told everyone that it was his sister Claire in mummys tummy! I don't know what we'd have done if she had been a he!! Her middle name is Marie after my sister.

My neice has called her children Cormac Michael and Finn Gabriel.

Once again Colette, a nice piece of detective work.

As I said in my second or third post, a sense of humour is  of some benefit to those who deal with me, I am not necessarily a "grump" but it gives me a little satisfaction to sometimes project this image.

My intent was merely to inspire some spirited debate without denting any egos. Hence my "sensitivity" in answering Lindsay who appeared to take unkindly to my original suggestion.

This was in no way intended to be spiteful Lindsay, and if I did offend you, you have my very humble apologies.

One of the things I have learnt of life is that, I would rather people thought I was a little "hard bitten" only to discover that it is not necessarily the case, rather than the reverse, if you get my drift.

Now back to naming of children.

I suppose I am essentially an "old geezer" with old values. For boys, I like manly anglo saxon names, Robert, Charles, William, etc., and for the girls my favourites are once again "older" feminine names, Grace, Claire, Katherine etc. I also like the giving of clearly identifiable local names, Scottish, Welsh ect where some connection exists.

I do however dislike the habit of some parents of giving their children unkind names, "Free Seagull" and "Boy", to name two of the most blatant cases I know of

Being new here, and always in too much of a hurry to bash off an answer, not to mention being an old codger suffering from "old timer's disease" it appears that I have sometimes confused those with whom I am corresponding by answering Colettes questions and directing my answers to Lindsay and possibly the reverse.

This only became apparent after Lindsay PMed me and I went back through the thread. "More haste, less speed", or something to that effect. Once again my apologies.

Colette,

I firmly believe that the person who said that life is to be taken seriously is a fool. Not everyone who holds a different opinion is having a go at you personally.  After all, this thread is titled "The Lighter side" is it not?

Your opinion (on any matter) is as valued as mine, probably moreso. I never try to take myself too seriously and it will help the blood pressure of those about me if they don't either. At no stage did I ever intend to "wind anybody up", life is too short to go around deliberately putting people offside.

Human frailties being what they are, that will happen without trying, unfortunately.  ;)

Please accept those apologies wrongly aimed at poor Lindsay as having been made to yourself.

I knew that I had offended somebody, it was just that in my haste to apologise I did so to the wrong person. :-[

Graceland told us once that he was named after a bird because a particular kind landed on the window sill just as he was born.  He said he'd always been grateful it wasn't a Merlin.  I told him to consider himself lucky it hadn't been a tit!   ;D

My Dad says he wanted to name me Myfanwy Morag (we have no Welsh or Scots connections though) and Mum wouldn't let him.  She named me with a really crap name which I later changed and will not tell you all what it was as there's bound to be people on here either whose name it is or who have loved ones with that name, so I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.  All I will say is that I hated it with a vengeance from when I was very little, and used to cringe in the playground when other children called out my name.  And I changed it when I grew up.  Dad was told he could name the next baby, but the next baby brought a spare with him, so they named one each and to be honest I think between the two of them they did a rotten job of naming the lot of us!

My brother's first child is due in June. He has a few names that he can't call the child, the first two are Jason and Jacob (as his name is Jay, so Jay's son and Jay's cub wouldn't work)
The other is Sam, because as a child every pet he had from gold fish to goat and everything in between was called Sam, so we have warned him not to do it.

I've a daughter Josie Michelle and a son Archie Alan Roy. Josie as we had a good friend by that name and Michelle after her mum, Archie because we liked it and we have Archie's and Archibald's in both trees, Alan & Roy after the granddads.

It's traditional on their dad's side for girls to have one middle name and boys to have two, so we followed that.

My sister has a son Stanley Arthur and is currently expecting again - she likes Oliver for a boys name but wonders whether she'll be laughed at having Stan & Ollie! Let's hope its a girl, eh!

My mum's middle name is Ailsa after a little girl her mum looked after and my grand dad was named Alwyne after the doctor who delivered him - I don't know if it was a first name or surname but I can't wait for the 1911 census to come out to see if I can find him!  A couple of generations down and both Ailsa and Alwyne (as names) are going strong!

Thanks Colette, you're not the only one who's passed on that comment. I think she was 21 in that photo or maybe younger. My daughter actually looks quite like her I think, she's only 5, but then I am biased!

You should be able to confirm that your daughter really looks like your Nan in a few years time Lewy. I agree with Colette, your Nan is a stunning looking woman. I've been reading a thread where Dad's are commenting
on their daughters on Belfast Forum. Dads are definitely biased ... quite right too.

all my children have hereditary names,my youngest is named stevie after his dad and grandad,gt grandad, then james thomas after my father((and recently discovered family name back to 1700),then aaron william, named after my grandads middle name ( i couldnt call him ernest, sorry grandad ) then simon peter after his fathers brother, tbh im glad i didnt have any girls as my nan was called hilda mcgregor (thats a middle name!) and my mums yvonne, their all the females in our family.

i cant stand modern names after pop stars etc, probably because my names sharon and i was born in the 70s,there were 7 sharons in my class alone, about 14 in my year, dont even ask how many traceys there were!!

My son is Gareth as first name - just because we liked the name, and Moorhouse as middle name. It's
my maiden name.

My father only had daughters, and my uncle's only son only has daughters so we figured we had to do something to keep it alive! My Dad was very touched at the gesture.

My BIL and nephews all have McGregor as a middle name - it's the maiden name of a female relative a few generations back, and now all the male children are given this name. Nice tradition!

One of my ancestors married a John Smeaton Combe. He had one brother called Robert McGregor Comb, another Thomas Roberston Comb (the mothers maiden name) Two others that I haven't deciphered yet were George Y Comb and William C Comb.

Interestingly the parents hailed from Scotland. I myself called my son Russell after my birth mothers name.

I did some research for a relative on my dad's side. Her maternal grandfather was called Robert Watson, his father was Robert Watson and his father was also Robert Watson. I haven't been able to get any further back yet so I don't know what his father was called but I could hazard a guess.
The lady for whom I did this (she is 76) was thrilled when I told her she was on t'internet. It made the hours it took worthwhile and she's promised me lunch in the pub next time we meet up.

My daughter has a very unusual name, one of those names that people either love or hate! We were considerate though and it can be shortened to a very pretty and 'normal' form, and we also gave her a 'normal' middle name, so if she really hates it when she gets older she can shorten it, or go by her middle name if she prefers.

When I was pregnant and we were going through name ideas we decided very quickly that we didn't want a family name (it seemed such a minefield - which name do you choose, from which side of the family, will relatives be offended if their name isn't chosen and another relatives name is etc..), plus all our family names seemed quite boring and old-fashioned to us!

We then started throwing more unusual names about and most of the ones I suggested my husband didn't like and vice-versa.  Then I suggested this particular name and my husband looked at me and said "yes, that's it, I like it" and the decision was made.

We also settled on an unusual boys name too, Aric Oliver, although that was far more difficult because the name doesn't sit particularly well with our surname and we were still wondering if it would be too much of a mouthful by the time I went into labour, but then I had a girl anyway :)

Gosh, I'd forgotten I'd even written in this thread way back when...  Now am the proud mummy of a 5-month-old baby girl.  We named her Eleanor Sophie - after Eleanor de Montfort, Simon de Montfort's wife  :)

Here's an interesting name that I have come across while doing my Tree:

Zipporah Ivy Breese - wow!!!  Wonder what was going through the parents minds when they named her LOL.

If any of you Chatters out there are expectant parents how about Zipporah for your daughter!!!!!!  Somehow, I don't think so  ;D

Lloydy, That's interesting, Zipporah Ivy Breese is one of my relatives and like you I thought it a rather grand name (I just searched for her name on the web and it brought up your post). Also, your reference to the name Trow suggests it is the same person. (My first post on RootsChat).

When I had my children I had not done much family history research but since then I have and I would very much have liked to use the name CORDLEY  as a second name for one of my sons.

It was my great great grandmother`s maiden name. She had ten children ,two died young and of the rest six boys all emigrated to Auatralia in the 1850`s and her two daughters lived far away so she died alone. Her husband had pre- deceased her .
How heartbreaking to see your children sail away and know you would in all probability never see them again.
It seems such a dignified name and she used it for one of her sons who sadly died young.

My father-in-law's sisters were named Rose, Violet and Daisy.  My daughter also has a floral name, which she shortens to Rose.

My maternal gt-grandmother was Sarah Ann, my grandmother was Hannah Sarah, my mother was Sarah Anne, though usually called Sadie, my cousin's first name was Sarah and my daughter's second name is Sarah, so five generations so far with a Sarah in their name.  I don't yet have a granddaughter, but am waiting hopefully to see if the name Sarah crops up again.

Warning - don't give your future children two or more first names and expect them to get called by one of the middle names - my life has been a misery on many occasions because my awful first name (named after an childless aunt) is always used on official documents or by people who don't know me.  Fortunately I have always been called by those who do know me by my middle name.

I always intended to call a daughter Laura, after my grandmother whom we all loved dearly. Amazingly, she looks very much like her.

If we had known in time, we would have called our son 'Matthew' as he shared the same birthday as an uncle in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Unfortunately, we didn't find that out until we took our baby to show him to the aunts and uncles in Geordieland

My daughter has given her eldest son the middle name of Owen, which was my father's middle name, and his uncle's middle name.  Only problem is, I haven't the foggiest idea how this name came into the family  :-X  Oh, the joys of family history!!!!

If I had a male child I would have to give him the middle name Conway. It was my brother whose name is David Conway Dowdeswell 1935 that started me thinking about family history. I have since found great uncle Arthur Conway Dowdeswell 1880 and the son of one of his brothers William Conway Dowdeswell 1906. I am now back to 1811 with 80 plus names on my tree. If anyone comes across any other Conway's I would love to hear even if a different surname as they may be sons of a married female in the line. Cheers all Linefinder.

I have the middle name Elizabeth after my grandmother (her middle name). I gave my daughter the same middle name to carry on the tradition. Much later I started researching my family and found that on both sides the name Elizabeth occurs in every generation. Not an uncommon name I know, but it's nice to think it's sort of a family name too.
My daughter has now given her daughter the same middle name of Elizabeth  :)

I had my 1st baby 19 days ago (Oct 15th) and we called her Jemima Maple Mary.

Jemima has no link to family history, but as I'm a teacher we wanted something a bit unusual. Maple is her paternal great grandmas first name, she was born in Canada. Mary was my grans middle name, she died a year ago and wanted the name carrying on as it was her grandmothers name also, whom gran really admired and even wrote a story about her life. It also happens to be my aunts middle name, my partners gran, mum and sisters middle name too.

Congratulations, Legs, and welcome Jemima Maple Mary - lovely name!  :D

I hadn't started researching when my children were born, and it didn't occur to me at the time to record family names in what they were called.  I wish I had done, now - both of them have completely unrelated names, although my daughter's is of Italian provenance and is quite unusual so I suppose that's something which could possibly be passed down the family!

I just remembered an absolute gem, and it is quite genuine; the gentleman was still alive when I was a child, in fact he died in 1950  (born in 1863)

Eugene Kossuth Kosciusko WHITNEY    'Eugene' looks as if it was a family name. OH tells me that 'Kossuth' was a Hungarian patriot, and I know that 'Kosciusko' was a (?)Polish one  (He and the Australian mountain named after the same person, presumably)

There is a birth registered in the same district in 1859 for a
   Eugene Jeanotte Roscuisko WHITNEY
who, if not a sister, is likely to be a relative

The above was actually a BOY who died aged 3. The index is transcribed as Eugene Jeannette Rosina!

There were some fairly radical people living here! They didn't call us 'Red Rance' for nothing. 'Rance', with a long 'a' is the local pronunciation of 'Raunds'

So many times since starting looking into the family history, I have said I wish I had done it before my daughters were born as they would certainly have been given family names had I known what they were. In the end we gave both of them Persian first names, the eldest is Shahla Olivia after her youngest paternal aunt, and the second is Parisa Nicole ( pronounced Par -ee-sa) a name which we both liked even though there is no family connection. If I was naming them now, Shahla would have Frances as a middle name and Parisa would have Ellen, both of which have appeared through many generations on both sides of my family.
Neither myself of my brother were given family names and Im just glad that my mum put her foot down, if my dad had had it his way, rather than a brother called Ian I would have had one called Rupert!!  That would have gone down so well at school in the 70s and 80s!!   :-X :-X

My first son is named after family Andrew Laurence Philip. Andrew is his fathers middle name and Laurance and Philip are his grandfathers.

When the 2nd child was on the way I thought it was perfect the girl would be called the same way, except after being told I was having a daughter, a week before he was born I was told I was having a Son.

So oh dear no boys names - what to do? Asked the grandmas about their fathers names - what a choice - Athur, Fred (Not Fredrick - just Fred), Horace or Thadeous.

My 2nd son is very happy I didnt name him after family - he is a Matthew (a Gift from God)

My grandfather used to tell us frequently, "There's always been a Charles in my family", and there were certainly several generations of Charles, but he named my father, his only son, Fred.  Not Frederick or Alfred, but just Fred.  ;)  None of Grandfather's siblings called their children Charles either.  Grandfather was called Alfred, but was himself known as Fred, even entered himself on the 1911 census as Fred.

To make up for the lack of a Charles my brother called his younger son Matthew Charles.

I've always liked my middle name, Alexander, so if I ever have a son I will probably name him that.

As for a girl, my sister is named Marie as is my auntie. I've always liked the name so I will probably name my daughter Marie, if only as a middle name.

Really love the name Alexander (Hubby's middle name) and also a family name way back (was not carried on)...........also like jensquest I am partial to the name Frances and have 7 generations to prove just how popular it was  ;D

I have three children............and I wonder what they might call their children, not that any of them are thinking about becoming parents just yet. Second daughter likes the name Jane, and there is a heap of them in the family, tho not for a few generations.
