Title: William Joseph Taylor born in Bristol died in perhaps Lewisham
Post by: nahbois on Saturday 01 August 20 05:21 BST (UK)
He had been living in London area since 1871.  He was a carpenter birthday 8th June 1862. He is on the 1939 Census  6 Rojack Road, Lewisham living with his married son, John Henry Taylor and family. All birthdays of this family fit.  William Joseph is down just as William Taylor, Retired.  His son left for Australia with family in 1952 so assume he went after his widowed father passed away.  I have ordered a few death certs for that area and time but if death not witnessed by relative they dont help. Cant figure out if he was buried under the name of just William Taylor, Retired.......instead of William Joseph Taylor, Retired Carpenter. Any assistance greatly appreciated........from Oz

I'm a little lost here....

Who went to Australia in 1952?

I'm seeing a Henry John (1889) and Alice (1891) at that address in 1939.

Henry John, the son and his wife Alice.   The children followed in the next couple of years.   No sign of William Joseph Taylor coming with them.

Thanks for you help Maureen

London Electoral Registers

1939 - 202 Stanstead Road Lewisham
Henry John and Alice Taylor with Peter and Muriel Nash (perhaps should be Mash?)
No William Taylor

Maybe the family moved during that year. There were no registers during the war.

6 Rojack Rd. SE23.  1939 Census. Yes it should be Mash and Taylor William is written below the two Mash people. They are related.

Have it on my screen as Lewisham.   That 202 Stanstead Road address rings a bell.  Wonder if they did move and could they be on two census?  William Joseph Taylor's wife died in 1938 at that 202 Stanstead Road address.

Will be re-checking........thank you

Thanks for you help Maureen,
The whole family had been in Canada for a few years from 1905 but had returned to the UK not long after.   Perhaps they did not register to vote on their return.
William Joseph's wife died in 1938 at that Stanstead address so perhaps William Joseph moved in with his son.   The 1939 Census had black blocking but shows John Henry and wife Alice, then blocked out. Under that are two Mash relatives and the William Taylor showing the correct date of his birth with Retired written as occupation. You make a good point about his perhaps dying during the war.  His actual death record may never be found.   Thanks again for your time and trouble.
All the best and stay safe, Susan.

If you are referring to my post, I meant electoral registers were not recorded during the war. Civil registers re deaths were recorded.
There is a 1942 death but the age is out by a year. Did you get that certificate too?

Hi Maureen,
You helped because you were interested to try.......my brain hadnt registered the different addresses of wife's death and 1939 census and I dont have easy access to voting registers so hadnt clocked the different abodes.  I just assumed they lived in Stanstead Road and William J then moved in with his son.  I didnt know that his son was also in Stanstead Road.   So that is something for me to investigate tomorrow.   SO my love, thank you very much.  It was much appreciated.  Now unfortunately the man of the house would like me to do something about getting his dinner!
Many thanks and you did help me.

She was Alice E Taylor death registered 1938 Woolwich.

Heywood (often ignored  ;))

Sorry, you were there before me.

So if Alice was in a public grave, William may also be. Can you see one about 1942, Jon?

Not ignoring you heywood (heaven forbid), but I have been able to answer my question! Hasn't helped!

Not you   :D

It is no problem at all. Maureen has pointed out that I gave the address information etc but Susan didn’t realise.

OK, a William Taylor buried 16 Dec 1942, authority Lewisham.
So that could be the one you referenced in Reply #9

But I don't think it is the same cemetery where Emma Alice is buried.

If this is William in 1881 in Islington with his parents Henry and Mary Ann
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q279-X9GQ

Mary Ann's maiden name seems to be Blake

Birth
TAYLOR, WILLIAM
Mother's Maiden Surname: BLAKE
GRO Reference: 1862  S Quarter in BRISTOL  Volume 06A  Page 10

No Joseph on that.

Sorry people, I havent been on this site for years and didnt look to see different people were kindly answering........wife was Emma Alice Waller known as Alice all her life apart from her birth and death when she was Emma Alice. Burial or cremation place was Lewisham.  Yes they did live in Lambeth and in abt 1905 went to Canada.  Cant find their return but definitely back in the 1930's. You have made me notice that J was only used on one census for William Taylor.   His birth is just William.  His mother was Blake. His marriage just states William.  Henry was his father and both Henry and William were Carpenters.   I guess if he was only William Taylor, hopeless to try to find him.
