I learn something new every day. From the Internet.
Last name: Groundwater
This interesting name with variant spellings, Groundwator and Grundwater, is of locational origin from a place so called in Orphir, Orkney Islands, Scotland. The placename derives from the Old English pre 7th Century "grand" ground, plus "waeter" water, hence "groundwater".

The Orkney Family History Society has grave transcriptions on their website. You might get something from that. They also have a search function which allows you to see how many people there were of any given name in Orkney in the Scottish censuses 1841 onwards. There were roughly 100 Groundwaters.

there are Groundwater graves in nearly every cemetery in Orkney, if you join the Orkney Family History Society you will find lots of information to help you, its very reasonable and can be done online with a credit/debit card. Orphir burials are at The Bu or St Nicholas Church, if you google it you will find lots of info

I have been wondering for some time whether this Robert is the same man who married Margaret Eunson in Leith on 10 July 1818, and who was a shoemaker in Tollbooth Wynd in Leith.
While I'm at it, Margaret's father was George Eunson - she was born in Leith, but I wonder if George was an Orcadian? I'm purely guessing from the surname, and the Groundwater link.
Can anyone shed any light?

Thank you for this reply brooksburns

I will have some ideas about your request after our meeting.
Thank you for the suggestion and also the P.M.

Black in his Surnames gives the origin as the place-name Grundwatter in Orphir, Alexander in Gyre,Orphir died in 1686, Edward in Tankerness was captured by the pressgang in 1812.
An Orkney Groundwater was concerned in the horrible murder of Janet Cornfoot a supposed witch in Pittenweem, Fife, 1705.

Re your query brooksburns.
I have been wondering for some time whether this Robert is the same man who married Margaret Eunson in Leith on 10 July 1818, and who was a shoemaker in Tollbooth Wynd in Leith.
Appears to me he is the same man, 1851 he is born c 1799 Kirkwall, Orkney.
Looks like he had a second Marriage 1833 to Helen Wishark.
If he died after 1855 ScotlandsPeople will have his death cert.
Trish :)
-
Thanks Trish, I agree it looks good from the 1851 - but with several missing documents I don't feel it's quite clinched. If only I could find Margaret's death record - or if Robert's second marriage record said he was a widower (it doesn't say either way) - then I'd say it was job done.
Aaaah (re Robert's death), he died before 1855 Jun 04, thanks to his son William's marriage certificate. At least that narrows it down.
Thanks all for your comments, it's renewed my energies, I will have a thorough look through all the related documents I've found and see what more I can work out.
-
I think I've found the extra evidence I wanted that Magnus Groundwater and Isabella Petrie are my ancestors.
"My" Robert named his son William Baxter Groundwater. Unless there's something I'm missing about the name Baxter (? scrutiny welcomed!), then this strengthens the evidence that he is the brother of that William Groundwater who married Helen Baxter. (Besides this, as I already knew, both brothers were shoemakers, and it looks likely that Robert is in the 1851 census as born in Kirkwall.) And thanks to the elder William holding out till 1873, I can see from his death certificate that Magnus Groundwater and Isabella Petrie were his parents.
Robert moved to Leith. Some branches of his descendants have been in Edinburgh constantly since then.

Rather a difficult request but wondered about Oman Groundwater...
Could he have been the father of John Groundwater, born 1745.
John married Margaret Nisbet born 1750.
Their son, Magnus born 1771 married Isabel Petrie, born 1776.
their sons were Robert born 1797 and William 1804.
Oman is an unusual name but it could have been incorrectly spelt.

I don't think Oman is a misspelling, it seems to be a local name.

Me again.
I'd love to find Robert Groundwater's death, 1851-1855, probably in Leith, shoemaker, birth about 1797, husband of Helen m.s. Wishark. I haven't been able to turn up anything in statutory or parish records. I suppose there must be a misspelling in the index, or something.
Can anyone help?
(He is not the watchmaker who died in Kirkwall in July 1850, son of Edward.)

Oh yes, you're right. It's Wishark on the marriage record, but Wishart on the children's baptisms and on her own death certificate.

Hi,
Sorry to revive an old thread but looking into family history as my grandmother passed recently, we originated from the same family line from what I can find. We can to Australia by Captain George Groundwater, sailing to Maryborough QLD. From my research we also link back to the same Magnus and I think I've correctly pieced together a family tree to the late 1500s on Ancestry.
Thanks,
Beau.

Hi
I have a Katharine Groundwater B:abt 1698 Orkney, Scotland in my family tree. She married John Crawford B:abt 1695 Holm, Orkney, Scotland. She was my 6G Grandmother and I live in Australia. I don't have any parents for her, so I'm not sure whether she had a brother Magnus.

Hey all,
Apologies continuing this thread, from searching through ancestry I have managed to track the Groundwater family line from Captain George Groundwater back to clan Mackenzie and I think further.
