Margaret H Sargeant was adopted by widow Martha Maud Hassett between 1920 and 1924.
Margaret birth to Nellie Sergeant was registered at West Derby, Lancashire, England in 1920 Q2. Her surname was changed to Hasset. Margaret and Martha emigrated to Canada in 1924 when she was aged 4.50 years.
Would there been any adoption records for Margaret?
Can someone please try and find to see if she was adopted.

The 1926 Adoption Act which came into effect 1st January 1927 was the first Act legalising adoptions. Prior to that children were just handed over with mainly a verbal agreement and, at best, a declaration setting out the child's change of identity was drawn up by a solicitor, but it was by no means a legally binding document. Adoption was viewed as an essentially private arrangement between the parties concerned.

Thanks for the info and yes I should had inserted the link.
Are the baptism details for West Derby available on line. Nellie also had another child registered as Harold Sergeant in 1917. I would like to see if the fathers are mentioned.
