My family name changed betewwn the 1861 census and the 1871 census from DYKER to DYER is there any way of knowing why or did people just change surnames if they wanted. Aberdeen

People have the right, in law, to call themselves anything they want to ;D
Just as long as there is no intention to deceive or defraud.
