Please could anyone confirm a marriage for me?. I have been looking for years to find a possible marriage for Annie Sewell who was my grandmothers sister. One of the problems that I had was that she had two sisters named Annie. Anyway I have finally found what I hope is the marriage of Annie Sewell born 1881. Her father was William J Sewell and he was a stone mason/stone polisher. The groom was Alfred Charles Rose. The marriage was in Camberwell in 1902.

Annie Eliza Sewell, aged 21, Machinist, 31 Heron Road, Herne Hill, father William Sewell (dec'd) greengrocer.
Doesn't sound like your Annie Sewell? Can post the rest of the details if required.
-
Thank you but not my Annie. I will have to keep looking.
-
Are you quite sure she is Annie?

Thank you but no not my Annie. Fathers name was William James and her mothers name was Ann , her maiden name was Grainger.
-
Can you give us details of the 1881 birth you are referring to?
This one I see is a bit earlier:
Ann Sewell, mother’s maiden name Grainger, birth reg Dec qtr 1878 Holborn 1b 707.
-
She was baptised in 1881 with her brother who was born that year. Her birth date is not filled in.

William James Sewell married Ann Grainger, Jun qtr 1878 Holborn.
Their daughter Ann/Annie was born in Holborn workhouse on 25 October 1878.
-
Unfortunately the 1881 census form is very faded. They are at 9 Little Gray’s Inn Rd, Holborn.
The children seem to be Annie 12, Alice 8, Annette 2 and William J, 1mo.
RG11/341/8/10.
Presumably this is a 2nd marriage* for William J Sewell snr (40, marble polisher). His wife Annie is 28.
*Now confirmed he was a widower when he married Ann Grainger at St Philip’s, Clerkenwell, 9 June 1878.

W J Sewell is a bookseller by 1901: RG13/140/143/3. (Indexed H T Sewell on some sites).
Annie Sewell married Thomas Murray (18, newspaper seller) at St Paul’s, Clerkenwell, 13 June 1897. Father: William Sewell, bookseller.
She may have reverted to using the name Ann Sewell by 1911 - not sure whether you have looked at her mother’s entry in that census.

Another mention of Annie

I still can't believe that Annie Sewell was the same Annie Sewell who was married to Thomas Murray (as I said before the two Annies might well have been sisters). My aunt told me that there were two Annies (sisters of my grandmother) My aunt remembered visiting Annie in the mental home and remembered the other Annie as well. It just doesn't make any sense that Annie would have had an affair with Frederick Clare then been so devastated when her husband Thomas died that she "lost her mind" and was admitted to a mental hospital where she spent the rest of her life.My aunt passed away last year, so I can't ask her anymore.

Daughter Catherine Murray was born on 19 Dec 1899 and baptised 11 Jan 1900 at St Paul, Clerkenwell.
Parents: Thomas (newsvendor) and “Hannah”, of 22 Portpool Lane, Leather Lane.
She’s Katherine in 1911, with her father.

Oh I should have remembered we’ve done all this before. I even did a huge chronology on that old thread.
Thanks rosie99.

This was a complicated family. William James Sewell had two children with his first wife who died quite young in childbirth. The eldest of these two children was Called Annie although there are variations of this. (Annie Martha - Mary Ann - Mary Martha Ann) however she married Frederick Buckthorpe in 1889. - Annie born 1878 married Thomas Murray in 1897 so she wouldn't have been on the 1901 census with her parents. But - there is an Annie born either 1881 or 1887 according to the birth years given. (for Annie and Sarah).although I believe that Sarah was the one born in 1887 because I always knew that she wasn't much younger than my grandmother (Harriet who was born in 1889) so what happened to the youngest Annie. Perhaps I should forget all about her. maybe she died. The Annie on the 1911 census with her mother is the one who was married to Thomas Murray, he was with his parents. This Annie was the one who ended up in a mental hospital, although the story that myself and my cousins were told that her husband had gone down with the Titanic has proved to be untrue. So no idea why we were all told that story.

Dear Betty,
Hope you are well. I am also looking for someone with the surname Sewell (either Annie or Eliza) who married an Alfred Charles Rose. I think they were my great-grandparents. I wonder if it is the same couple you are searching for?
Kind regards,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, Do you have a year of birth for Annie/Eliza? and who were her parents? I do have an Annie who married a Thomas Murray and another Annie (her sister) who I have never managed to find anything about, I have wondered whether she had another name but just called herself Annie.

Hello Betty & Rosie,
I am sorry to have allowed so much time to pass before responding to you. Life got in the way! But I am back looking at the Sewell family again, and have obtained a copy marriage certificate for Alfred Charles Rose & Annie Eliza Sewell from 1902 (thank you for the information you shared on this Rosie, which helped me locate it). I would be happy to share a copy of the certificate with you Betty, if you are interested. They were both 21 at the time of the marriage, so would have been born in 1881-ish. Annie Eliza's father is listed as William Sewell (deceased) and he was a greengrocer.
All the best,
Lisa

Thank you so much for all that very useful information, Ladyhawk. My mum remembers the name George Hawkins, so it must be the right family!
Betty, I am not able to send a PM to you until I post at least 3 messages on this board. This is my 3rd message so hopefully I’ll be able to message you privately now… I will give it a go
