Title: Samuel Mozeen, gunsmith
Post by: suttontrust on Saturday 25 July 20 08:53 BST (UK)
Samuel Mozeen died in the Hull Charterhouse in July 1850, aged c. 55.  His career as a gun maker in Hull is well documented but I can't find any clue to his origins.  The 1841 census shows him with Dorothy Mozeen, the same age and presumably his wife.  Earlier than that, nothing.  Can anyone help?

Aged 50 per GRO deaths, his burial record, and newspaper death notice.

Groindex has death in 1850 at age 50. Possible baptism Hull 11 Oct 1799 - parents John and Mary. He seems to have left a will - death duty registers name Elizabeth Mozeen. 1851 census has a single Elizabeth Mozeen as annuitant born c.1791 - possible baptism for her 11 Oct 1791 with parents John and Mary.

Re John Mozeen there is a John Mozeen in the Charter House Hospital in the 1841 census and a burial 23 Nov 1843 age 88. Possible marriage 1 Jan 1781 Hull to a Mary Tayler - possible burial for her 1 Dec 1822 age 68.

This is fascinating.  John Mozeen, like Samuel, is on our 19th century register, so we can assume he's Samuel's father.  However, Samuel entered the Charterhouse in 1849 with his age given as 54, when it was only 50 (the regulations said you had to be 60).  He retired from his business earlier in the same year.  Elizabeth likely to be Samuel's sister.
Thanks, all of you.
