Hi, I am trying to find if my father's grandparents have a headstone. The details are a bit sketchy, the names are John & Mary D'Arcy.
We are planning a special family trip in October for my father's 70th birthday and he would like to erect a stone if one is not in place.
The only details he has is that the funeral directors were in Flood street Galway.
Hoping someone can help.

Hello pernes,
I'm sorry you did not receive a reply to your message dated 24th August last year in view of the fact that it was a special trip to Ireland for your father's 70th Birthday. I hope you were not too disappointed by the fact that you did not receive a reply.
I would be interested to know what progress you made when you arrived in Ireland. Were you able to find the undertakers in Flood Street, Galway? Did they have sufficient details enabling you to learn more about the place where your father's grandparents were buried? Was there a headstone already in place or did your father have to make arrangements to erect one?
If you had no success when you were in Galway last October does your father intend to proceed with his plans and would you like further assistance from the members of Rootschat in your search.
There were a couple of men named John D'Arcy in Galway at the time of Griffiths Valuation in the county in 1855.
At this stage it would be difficult to say which, if either, might be the John you are seeking. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php
The name John D'Arcy may be found in the following locations:-
Magheramore townland in the parish of Kilcummin (Note townland then parish)
Ballymore Upper in Clonfert
Best Wishes, Christopher

Hiya migky,
That is a great offer of yours.
Here are some more cemeteries in Co. Galway...they seem to have no one by the name of D'Arcy though but maybe no one posted the necessary details. http://www.interment.net/ireland/galway.htm Here is another site for Menlough Cemetery..about 30 miles from Galway city. Sorry I have not checked the pictures of the headstones for the names. http://community.webshots.com/album/378425536UTNBfX

Hi Many thanks for your replies, my father has discovered that the burials took place in John and Mary's home parish of Killannin a parish in Moycullen, Galway, and that we found the grave in the old cemetery. They lived in a tiny village called Garrynagry, there was only about 7 houses.
They lived in Abbeygate Street, Galway City, a place were a lot of people from Killannin moved to, and that their house is now Cookes restaurant.
Mary D'Arcy's maiden name was Walsh, so would be greatful if anyone knows anything about the Walsh family from Killannin or indeed the D'Arcy's.

It might interest you to know that there are still a couple of d'Arcy families living in the Killannin and Cloonabinnia area around Moycullen, in fact one of them was until fairly recently married to a Walsh, which is a fairly common name is this area also. They have been divorced though for some years now.

My grandmother Elizabeth D'Arcy(Ryan) was a sister of John D'Arcy, she is buried in the grave next to John & Mary. Mary Walsh (D'Arcy) also came from Garrynagry. Both still have relatives in the locality.

Welcome to Rootschat. Pernes hasn't been online since 2006 but perhaps they will see your message and reply.

:DHello everyone, I am the Mother of Pernes,! we went to Ireland and as she has mentioned we did find the graves of my husband's grandparents, much to his delight. However I have been trying to 'do' his family tree with very little success on the D'Arcy side so I am really interested in the reply re Elizabeth D'Arcy sister of John. If the person who posted this finds this reply I would love to hear from them.
I was about to post a query about the D'Arcy family and quite my chance found my daughter's original plea, I did not know about it, so may I say many thanks to those who responded it was very kind of you all.

Hello again, a couple of points, 1. Are you able to view Ancestry.com? I have received a message on their message boards from a Jim who attaches a report on a Father Ryan also on the death of Father Ryan, 11th May 1843. Jim suggests I mention this to you. If you can view it yourself it is on the Darcy and Halloran, Porridgetown,co. Galway page, it appears on the last page of messages 71-75 and the signature is Killannin dated 23rd Octob er 2010. Jim obviously watches this site as he noted the correspondence between us. If you cannot view it I will try and attach it to this site but it might take a couple of attempts!!
2. My husband was very interested in the info you sent and he has a query that has puzzled him for some time, he recalls a mention of a great aunt, no name, but I think must be Mary or Margaret, who went to Chicago and became a Nun, the family believe that she became a Mother Superior but I have no idea how to find her, I have tried various Google searches but no luck, any ideas?
Also do you have any contact with Isadore's children?
regards Joan

Hi Joan,
Thank you for the information you sent me on Father Ryan, I have had a look at it and added this information to my collection.
Also I am in touch with Isadore's granddaughter Anne who lives in Chicago. The next time that I am speaking to her I will ask her about the great aunt , the nun for you.
I will be in touch again.
