John F Carey born Douglas, Cork he was born at his auntie's house by all accounts.
John F Carey died 2016 in Plymouth.
I'm trying to help is widow Mary to trace his family for her.
Jack as he was known as and his widow Mary were great friends of myself and my husband.
They had 2 children a daughter now married and a son who are both alive and well. The 2 children live in different parts of England now.
So, any Carey's on here that had a brother or cousin know as Jack Carey that can help?
-
Does your friend have a year of birth?
Have you looked for a birth in the indexes?
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
-
Have you any idea what age he was when he died in 2016?

From the info you have given, there is a John F Carey b 1946, Cork with mmn Lynch.
Your friend might have a father’s name from the marriage certificate, if not she should purchase it so you know you are on the right track.
There is a marriage to go with both those names and it is in the right area.
That is all supposition on my part though.
You can look for marriages here
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/captcha.jsp
Gather all the information you can.

I'm waiting for Mary to come back to me with her marriage certificate details so hopefully she can give me Jack's father's name. I've also asked if Jack had any brothers and sisters. Just waiting for her to get back to me.
-
I've got all the details to trace Jack's family backwards now from Jack's widow.
-
That’s great.
Good luck

Thanks, I think I'm going to need all the luck in the world!
-
If you have his father’s name, you can search for a marriage.
Then go back - check with census etc.

It's likely to be the townland of Ballinreeshig, south of the suburb of Douglas in Cork city.

A correct birth record for Christopher Carey also still eludes me.

I've asked Jack's widow if she can ask Jack's only sibling if he remembers the names of his aunts and uncles. Jacks widow met a few of them in both Limerick & Cork but as she met so many all in one day she can't remember who was married to whom!

New information : Jack's Father Christopher Carey was born in Croome near Limerick
Anyone know where that is and will it lead me to find his birth certificate?

can't see them in 1911
Via the daughter Mary's marriage 1906
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1906/10120/5682288.pdf
I believe this is the Carey's in 1911

Looking at the original I don't know where they got the l from!
Not that it helps find Christopher :-\

Christopher Carey, Father John Carey according to his marriage certificate but could have been his brother maybe.
These are the names that Jack's widow and Jack's brother have come up with.
"However here are the names that we do know".
Mary:
Peggy Dawes:
Hannah she died in 2002.
Agnes:
Eileen:
Noreen:
Teresa:
Then the males:
Christopher:
Michael:
Timothy:
John:
Edward (called Eddie).
12 in total
I've searched for all of these names and there are loads for each.
What a nightmare Surname to research!!!

Well that looks like it could well be our Christopher! Possibly someone in the Carey family brought him up as he state's his father was John Carey on his marriage certificate.....but again so many John Carey's to choose from!
-
It is only a possibility - could be just coincidence but worth noting just in case. I have looked for Fitzgerald/Carey marriages but can’t see anything.
You gave a list of siblings for Christopher. Do you know if they stayed in Ireland?
Is Dawes the married surname of Peggy?

I don't think Jacks' widow or his brother know if they all stayed in Ireland. I did ask Jack's widow if the family knew if any emigrated but I don't think they knew anything more that was in the list of names. I assume that Peggy Dawes was her married Surname.
-
Hopefully, more than a possibility:
The Irish civil marriage indexes show that Percy J Dawes and Margaret Carey are on the same page - September quarter 1950, Cork, Vol 5
Peggy is a shortened version of Margaret
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FTRP-23Y
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FTR5-T6D
Using the same search - Ireland Civil Registration Index
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
You can search for children using mother’s name too. There are three children showing Dawes/Carey
As you know, we can’t post their names as they could still be living.

Of course, these may be the wrong Careys :-\

Her death notice doesn't give her maiden name, pity.
-
This one sounds interesting
Carey (Cork) Jan 7 1967 at St Finbarr's hospital, John beloved husband of the late Ann Carey and formerly of Ballinresig, Ballygarvan and 23 Friar's Walk. Deeply mourned by loving sons and daughters etc
St Joseph's Cemetery.

Looks like Ann/Annie died suddenly in 1 Dec 1957, death notice doesn't give any family names

So, we have deaths
1944
John Carey , 67 yrs (born about 1877) 36 Friars Walk with son Timothy at 34 Friars WalK with wife Margaret
1967
John Carey , 85 yrs (born abt 1882) 23 Friars Walk. With wife Ann/ie.
Margaret Dawes also 23 Friars Walk.
This one seems more favourable with link to Ballinresig and Peggy Dawes.

I’m also a grandchild of Margaret Carey & Percy Dawes of 23 friars walk. Margaret Carey’s Father lived in the cottage in ballinreeshig until he went to live with my grandmother in 23 friars walk.
