Hi all, I have hit a brick wall with Andrew SCOTT alias Thomas PURDY. I know about his early adulthood and have information about crimes he committed in England, that he was sentenced to death which was commuted to transportation for life, and his subsequent life in Australia. His occupation was listed as Stockinger.
What I can't find is his date of birth, place of birth and parents. All the information I have states that he was born in Scotland (possibly Roxburghshire) c1791. There is nothing on marriage or death certificates to help.
One thing I do know is that he was an absconder from the Derbyshire Militia sometime before 1810-1812. I don't have access to the Derbyshire Militia records. Can anyone help me, please?

Do you know which name was his 'proper' one, or did he use both as and when he felt like a change?
If the crimes were in England, any idea when he was first down there?

There is a baptism for an Andrew Scott on 7 May 1791 at Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland. Parents are William Scott and Janet Dixon.
There is another one on 8 August 1790 at Bowden, Roxburgh, Scotland. Parents are Andrew Scott and Marion Sinclair
These are from a transcription on Find My Past.

Either of those families are possibilities. Andrew Scott and Eleanor (Ellen) Dillon had four children: Andrew, Ann, Ellen, William. I will take a further look at the families and see if I can trace them. Thanks so much xx

Where do you see this information -
"'... His occupation was listed as Stockinger."
"...All the information I have states that he was born in Scotland (possibly Roxburghshire) c1791."
"...I do know is that he was an absconder from the Derbyshire Militia sometime before 1810-1812."
If he marries as Andrew SCOTT, and names his son Andrew.......he has a greater sense of
identity / connection / legitimacy to the SCOTT name than to the PURDY name?

Thank you Wivenhoe ;D
This record states he is native of Norfolk :-\

That locates him to be in Norfolk.....but where was he born?.
-
He is in a few trees on Ancestry.
Australia convict index (no image on Ancestry) has a different age:
Andrew Scott [Thomas Purdy] Age: 33 (born about 1780)

So was he transported twice or were there two Andrew Scotts alias Thomas Purdy?
So it looks like Andrew Scott alias Thomas Purdy or Purdey was born in Scotland circa 1780, a hosier, and was transported in 1812/1813.
The bricklayer Thomas Purdy born in 1790's from Norfolk, transported in 1820/21, would appear to be someone else.

There are two Thomas PURDYs ....convicts....NSW. I suspect that they are being mixed up on family trees?
