After checking the 1841 census, I have my great great grandfather born around 1811 in Forden, Montgomeryshire. He married Mary (possibly Davies) around 1838. I've tried to find his birth on Free BMD without success. Just wondered if anyone can help.

Birth registration only started in the Sept quarter of 1837 so you won't find David's on FreeBMD. Prior to that you will have to look for baptism records and if you are lucky they may give a date of birth as well as the baptism date. familysearch.org is one place to look.
To find out the maiden name of David Lewis' wife you can use the GRO index to find the births of any of their children after 1837. The GRO index gives the mother's maiden name which FreeBMD doesn't do.
Does FreeBMD have a possible marriage for David and Mary?

The 1841 census does not show birthplaces - just a Y or N to indicate whether they were born in the county in which they were living at that time. Also - ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs on that census so he may have been born later than 1811
Can't see the 1841 entry you refer to
Have you found him in 1851?

Have you found him in 1851?
I think this must be them on the 1851
Marsh Road, Oswestry
HO107/1993/315/3
David Lewis, 42, Ag lab , B Forden * written as Fordon!
Mary, 35, b. Felton
And 7 children
The birth registration of one of the children would give Mary's maiden surname.

In 1841 in West Felton, Oswestry
HO107/914/1/23/4

This could be son Richard's birth registration
December Q, 1839, Oswestry. MMN Rodrick
-
They married 15 August 1837 in Knockin
David 26, labourer, father - Richard Lewis, labourer
Mary, 21, servant, father - William Roderick, blacksmith

Have you got them on the 1861:
Maesbury RG09/1877/23/18
David born Welshpool (not far from Forden)

The nearest baptism that I can get for David Lewis with a father Richard in the locality of Forden/Welshpool is
25 Jun 1809, Berriew David son of Richard, farmer, and Mary Lewis in the township of Livior (Llifior today!)
Berriew is not far from Forden (6-7 mls)
Re the farmer to labourer of Richard. My 2 x great grandfather (a younger son) was a farmer at his marriage in 1821 but was an ag lab by 1841, so it was possible.
