Hi,
I am researching the family of Henry William Porter, Licensed Victualler, born 13 Nov 1824, baptised 7 Feb 1826, St Matthew Bethnal Green.
He married Sarah Hannah Porter 20 May 1846, Parish Church, Bow, Middlesex.
Henry's parents were William Porter, Licensed Victualler, and Sarah Ann, surname unknown.
I have traced the family of wife Sarah Hannah Porter but have reached a brick wall with Henry's ancestry. I would be grateful for any leads there.
It is thought that this family was related to Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) who married Susannah Kennet (c.1712-c.1781) in Chelsea, London. They had a son, George Philip Ehret, who became an apothecary at Watford, Hertfordshire. I have not yet found any links with the Porter family.
Thanks,
John

Hi John.
On the Ancestry image of the marriage, I think the small writing under the occupation of Licensed Victualler for Henry's father William could be an abbreviation of Publican.
Not sure it's of much help though.
Sue

Thanks for that, Sue.
I'm sure you're right.
Regards, John

According to his baptism his mother was a plain Sarah (not Sarah Ann).

Hello Annette,
Yes, you are correct but here is William and Sarah (Ann) Porter's family according to Parish records:
William Porter born 6 Aug 1820, baptised 31 Jan 1821, Bethnal Green, died young?
Sarah Catherine Porter born 6 Feb 1822, baptised 22 May 1822, Bethnal Green
Henry William Porter born 13 Nov 1824, baptised 7 Feb 1826, Bethnal Green
Arthur John Porter born 12 Jan 1828, baptised 13 Feb 1828, Bethnal Green
William Porter born 21 Mar 1830, baptised 9 Oct 1833, Bethnal Green
Notes: First William and Arthur John have mother as Sarah Ann and Sarah Catherine, Henry and second William have mother as plain Sarah.
Thanks for your interest,
John

"...(Henry William PORTER) married Sarah Hannah PORTER 20 May 1846, Parish Church, Bow, Middlesex.
I have traced the family of wife Sarah Hannah PORTER "
When you are researching the origins of a PORTER who married a PORTER......and you know the origins of one PORTER...it would be useful to give this information to a forum.....the better to eliminate PORTERs who are from Sarah Hannah's family.
What do you have for parents and siblings of Sarah Hannah PORTER.

Hi all, hope this isn't too much information.
Edward Porter and Mary Ann Lawford's family (Sarah Hannah Porter's siblings):
1. Mary Ann Porter born 11 Sep 1808, Finchley, Middlesex, died Apr-Jun 1891, Hackney.
She did not marry and was housekeeper for her brother Robert.

She last appears in the 1851 census living with her brother Robert and sisters Mary Ann and Maria at 6 Regent Place, Tower Hamlets.
3. Robert Storks Porter born about 1814, Highgate, Middlesex, was head of household in several censuses with his unmarried sisters. He was a house and estate agent and later an accountant, did not marry, and died Apr 1893 in Kensington, London. It is possible he was the uncle who sponsored art lessons for his niece Sarah Ann Porter.
4. Joseph Porter born about 1819, City Road, Finsbury, Middlesex married Elizabeth Davies (born about 1817, Gorsley, Monmouthshire) and they lived Trevethin, Monmouthshire. Joseph was a confectionery maker and died 25 October 1862 in Pontypool, Monmouthshire, Wales.

They had nine children, some born in Swansea, some in Stepney, London, and some in Crayford, Kent.
Those that married, lived and died in England. George, an optician, died Jul 1899, in Kent.
Note that Rev Edward Porter (1760-1834) married twice. His married his second wife Mary Ann Teulon (1766-1852) 14 Apr 1801, St Margaret Pattens, London.
They had four children:
Mary Ann Porter born 1806, died between 1881-1891, married Thomas Challis.

Is the William Porter of the Blind Beggar, probate 25/2/1834, the father of Henry William?
When youngest child William was baptised 1833 address was Whitechapel Road, and the Blind Beggar was (is) in Whitechapel Road? It's a detailed will with executors appointed and from what I can gather whilst I can see mention of a daughter and sons they do not appear to be named suggesting they were very young. Unless I missed it I can't see anything regarding name of wife to confirm if it is 'your' man.
Annette
-
Hello Annette,
That's some last will and testament, thank you very much for your efforts in finding this.
It does seem like this William Porter, late of the "Blind Beggar" could be Henry William's father.
Henry would have been about 10 years old when William died. In the 1851 English Census he was a Licensed Victualler at 26 Brook Street, Finsbury, London.

Hello Sue,
In the light of the William Porter of the "Blind Beggar" probate of 1834 that Annette has found, I wonder if could be abbreviation for "Deceased".

I looked for widow Sarah Porter in Censuses to find:
1851 Sarah Porter, Matron, W, 62, previous occupation "Licensed Victualler", born Norton Folgate, Middlesex, in Christchurch Workhouse, Charles Street Mile, Mile End Old Town, Stepney.
1841 Sarah Porter, Matron, 50, in District Whitechapel Union Workhouse, Mile End Old Town.
This could be our Sarah. She may have died between 1851 and 1861.
Interestingly, I found a burial in 1833, William Porter, 46, St Mary Whitechapel Tower Hamlets, address Workhouse. Could this be our William Porter?

Hello wivenhoe,
Thank you for your fine research on Sarah Ann Porter. It matches what I have already.
Like you, I haven't found a ship's list for her and wonder if she knew the FEATON familty in London.
As far as I can see, she had no PORTER relatives in New Zealand,
Her marriage certificate has witnesses John FEATON (father or brother of bridegroom) and Mary Ann PAYNE who may have accompanied Sarah on the voyage out.
The newspaper notice of her marriage has "eldest daughter of Henry PORTER, late of London". I haven't found any death for him.
Thanks again for your help,
John

Census 1871 at 9 Wellesley St Mile End Old Town
PORTER Sarah Hannah 48y head married no occupation b. Highgate Middlesex
PORTER Alice Easter 19y dau dressmaker b. Holborn, Middlesex
Other households at this address are BURROWS James and Caroline, NORRISH John and Mary.
Where is Henry William PORTER for 1871 Census?
The newspaper notice for PORTER - FEATON marriage, 1870, NZ, shows that father Henry William PORTER is alive.
If "eldest" is used correctly, then Sarah Ann PORTER should have two or more younger sisters
Using Paperspast....shipping arrivals....1st to 10th February 1870.....
Only coastal and trans Tasman arrivals with passengers. Nothing that might be described as immigrant ship.......one ship from England "Mallard" with 23 passengers.
It is possible to find details of passengers on immigrant ships, but I do not know that you would find such for a ship with mostly cargo, and a small number of passengers.

Is Robert the source of the inheritance?. But he died in 1893, by which time Sarah's botanical art work was well advanced / completed.

Hello wivenhoe,
Thank you for your interest in this puzzle and for your contributions. I have been asking the same questions. Just possible that Sarah Ann Porter arrived in New Zealand on the barque Mallard.
A paper on Sarah Ann Featon née Porter and her book of New Zealand flora was prepared and presented for the Gisborne Philosophical Society by Philip M. Allingham in 1959.
Allingham states, "Mrs. Sarah Featon had been educated by an uncle who was interested in painting and had probably encouraged her in this art."
Two paintings were mentioned by Allingham:
"A painting of Carnarvon Castle executed by Mrs. Featon's grandfather, Edward Porter, in 1830." (Edward Porter (1788-1850) married to Mary Ann Lawford)
"A painting of the Friar's Cowl Lily, done on parchment in 1763, by G. D. Ehret, a great-great uncle of Mrs. Featon's." (Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770))
It seems Allingham had been in contact with surviving family members. I have explored the Georg Dionysius Ehret line but haven't been able to see a family link with Sarah Featon.
The Album was first published in Nov 1887 and in 1897 a copy was sent to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee.
The "late of London" in the marriage notice could mean that Henry Porter was deceased or just visiting New Zealand. Surely if he was domiciled in New Zealand his place of residence would be mentioned.
There were several mentions in the newspapers of a Mr Henry Porter, Queen's Hotel, Queen's Redoubt, Maungatawhiri, Pokeno, applying for a bush licence etc. 7 Sep 1866, 17 Apr 1867, 21 Apr 1868, and of a Mr Henry Porter, foreman of jury in various Inquests of Death about same time.
Thanks again,
John

Do you have this marriage certificate -
Alice Esther Porter born 12 May 1851, Holborn, Middlesex married Henry J. William Harris, Jul 1880, West Ham, Essex
It would be interesting to see how father of Alice Esther is named, also names of witnesses.

Marriage transcription on FindMyPast:

Henry James William Harris, bachelor. Father - Henry
Alice Esther Porter. Father - Henry, Gentleman

Thank you for those details, BumbleB, I do not have that marriage certificate.
Here is Sarah Ann Porter in 1851:
1851 English Census, 6 Regent Place, Tower Hamlets, London
Robt. Storks Porter, Head, U., 37, House and Estate Agent, Highgate, Middlesex
Mary Ann Porter, sister, U., 42, Finchley, Middlesex
Elizabeth Porter, sister, U., 39, Highgate, Middlesex
Maria Porter, sister, U., 25, Stepney, Middlesex
George Henry Porter, brother, U., 22, Nautical Instrument Maker, Stepney, Middlesex
Sarah Ann Porter, niece, 3, St Georges East, Middlesex
Henry Robert Porter, nephew, 1, Bethnal Green, Middlesex.
Notes: Sarah Ann and her baby brother Henry are in the household of her mother's siblings.
I haven't been able to find any of this Porter family in the 1861 English or Scottish Census. Would they have gone to Ireland?

"...It would be interesting to see how father of Alice Esther is named"
I mean...is he identified as being deceased.

It is only a transcription - no indication of deceased.
And, to add, Henry James William's father is said to be Henry, Glass Vender (sic)

There was a Henry William Porter who died 5 July 1900, aged 77 years, 73 Inverness Terrace, Hyde Park, Middlesex, with probate effects of 9472 pounds, 9 shillings, 8 pence. He was the right age.
Is there any way to access these details?

You can apply for a copy of his will - cost is £1.50 - you have to register, but that is free:

Hello All,
The 1900 will mentioned has arrived but it is for Henry William Porter who married Margaret Harriet Bugden in 1858. His father was Henry Gibson Porter. In 1881 he was an actuary and had 3 servants.
So it's "back to the drawing board" to find death and perhaps a will for Sarah Featon's father.
Thanks for your interest,
John

George Henry Porter was my great-grandfather and i am particularly interested in the level of detail posted about his father's family and would be grateful for any help with identifying the sources for this.

Hi Dennis,
I'm interested to learn that George Henry Porter is your great-grandfather.

It is thought that niece Sarah was educated by an uncle, possibly your George Henry Porter, who encouraged her to paint.
If you have any information about her I would be pleased to hear.
Thanks, John

Thanks for your prompt reply and for the information!
One of the initial reasons i subscribed to Ancestry was to locate where my grandfather, William Herbert Porter, was born and to find about about his family. He died when my mother was 12.
It was a DNA test and link which enabled me to gain this information through a connection to one of his brother's great-grandsons. Similarly the DNA test have linked me to Sarah Porter's descendants, the Emms family.
I am intrigued by the reference to paper by Philip Alilngham presented to the Gisborne Philosophical society and particularly to a painting by the Rev Edward Porter. Do you have copy of this paper as i cannot locate this on the Internet? I doubt the painting still exists but i wonder how he was aware of this?
I attended the annual Noel Teulon Porter memorial lecture at the Goldhill Museum this year and copied the papers they have about him. Not a great revelation but one of two interesting insights into his life in .There is about 9/10 boxes of papers in the Cambridge University library which, post pandemic, I hope t review.
What is your connection or interest in Sarah Porter?
-
I am researching Sarah Ann Featon (née Porter) as my wife is working on an exhibition of her botanical art work and the Album she and her husband produced and is also writing a history of Sarah's time in New Zealand. Most of her paintings are held in Te Papa, our national museum.
Phillip Allingham's 1959 presentation is held by the Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne. It is more about Sarah Featon's art and has little personal information apart from the details already mentioned in this thread. Unfortunately we haven't been able to trace the paintings mentioned.
We haven't been able to find any of the Porter family in the 1861 census, this remains a mystery to us as well as what happened to Sarah's father, Henry William Porter, born 13 Nov 1824, Bethnal Green.
-
The license of another pub was transferred to Henry in 1851 - see link
https://pubwiki.co.uk/LondonPubs/Holborn/Greyhound.shtml
On Ancestry, there's a professional genealogist in Australia who has been researching Henry and who has posted some details.
Although clearly the branches of the family diverged, there's a possibility Noel Teulon Porter's papers may have send some light on the Porter family background.
Sarah's great-grandfather - George Lawford - was a bookbinder whose business was based on Oxford Street.
There's probably more to find out at the London Metropolitan archive and in Tower Hamlets, but having lived in East London for many years, I now live in County Durham. This research will have to wait until circumstances change in the pandemic.
You're probably in contact with the Emms family. If not I can forward some details.
There's a hint on Ancestry for a a Henry William Porter which is for a death registered in Australia. It seems to match, but I cannot get access to the whole record as I do not have worldwide membership. Similarly under Sarah's brother, William Charles, there's a hint about how he entered Australia. Do you know how he came to New Zealand?
There's a very interesting history for Sarah's great-grandfather Edward Porter's brother George and how he was sent as a convict to Australia and his subsequent life in Tasmania. I suspect that is the subject of the current professional research.
Best wishes to your wife on her project- I'll be interested in the finished work! I've ordered a reprint of the work and hope to visit the British Museum to see the original given to Queen Vic.
-
Happy New Year to you and yours.
Thanks for your best wishes. It looks like we are "on the same page" with our research. The Australian researcher (gschenery) you mention is our relative and we have been working together on this project.
Sarah Ann Featon's brother, William Charles Porter born 7 April 1853, Bethnal Green, Middlesex, married Emmeline Florence Lee Feb. 1881, Auckland, New Zealand.
They had a daughter Alice Florence Porter born 1882, died 1883, Auckland.
From various records, it seems William arrived at Port Chalmers (Dunedin) 24 October 1872 on board the "May Queen" (which made 16 voyages to New Zealand). Possibly he worked on the goldfields for a time before going to Auckland to be a tobacconist. In 1878-1879 he is recorded at Victoria Street Intersects., Auckland, as Allen & Porter, Tobacconists.
It would be great if you could get to trace and picture the Album that was sent to Queen Victoria in 1897. A casket made from New Zealand native woods was made by the local Mayor. It may still be there in the British Museum.
Yes, we have been in touch with the Emms family who are supporting the exhibition.
You might like to send us your email address by private message.
-
I have not found this family in the usual 1861 London census records, but have been given an intriguing reference in The Genealogist site to a George Porter, 25, whose profession is a chronometer salesman. Could he be George Henry Porter b ca 1829? I could not see this person in the usual sites.
Also a Maria Porter who might be his sister. No Robert Porter with an occupation similar to an accountant or financial secretary.
I hope I am not breaking any rules by asking but would it be possible to confirm this? More details of this household in 1861 would be much appreciated.
Thankyou.
