Title: Breedon on the Hill
Post by: christine.b on Thursday 25 June 20 17:00 BST (UK)
Are there any detailed street maps of Breedon on the Hill from, say, 1845 to 1900? I'm looking in particular for Chapel Street and Fishpool Street (1881 census) where my ancestors lived.  I can see on the maps I have that there was a Methodist Chapel, and I understand that the War Memorial now stands on part of the green formerly known as Fish Pool.  So I can guess at the approximate location of each, but it would be a bonus to see where the actual streets were.

Any help would be very much appreciated - thank you.

This one has some street names - zoom out to see the details - https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/440392/322848/12/100954

The map list also goes back to 1882 but no street names - the 1:2500 series

This gives a broader picture but no street names - https://maps.nls.uk/view/114591870

Just a thought - have you tried to contact the parish council?

https://www.breedonparishcouncil.org.uk/

Or this company for old maps:

Thank you very much, David. I need to subscribe to Old Maps as, without that, I'm not able to zoom in sufficiently. But I'll consider doing that if I can't find the information elsewhere. Christine

Thank you for the suggestions, BumbleB. I'll contact the parish council and, in the meantime, have a look at the Francis Frith site. Christine

Check this site out, I haven't looked right through it but there are images of the Fishpools along with other early images, interesting read.

Hi I lived at Breedon 1984 to 1994. During that time the old chapel (opposite the war memorial) was bought by someone named Archer, he converted it into a private dwelling. Also during this time I had some old  'electricity board' maps that referred to the village having electricity installed, I'm sure we passed then on to the parish council.

I think I replied in messages instead of here. So, to repeat, many thanks for your suggestion.

The war memorial was built from Breedon stone which my great grandfather John Gillies Shields owned.  He owned all of Breedon.  I lived there for a year and now lives abt 10 miles away.

Someone on this site mentioned the book by F. Taylor.  I've just found out that a copy of it is at Leicester University.  I have sent them an email to see if I can get it out on loan.  I am doing a lot of research about Breedon because my great grandfather was John Gillies Shields who was the lord of the manor there, as well as Melbourne and Isley Walton.

It would be great if anyone has any history of Breedon that they could pass onto me.

Thanks,
Debbie Rea

My go to site for old maps is The National Library of Scotland site, I also like their transparency overlay feature which allows two images to be blended together by making a 'modern' photo of the area to be bended onto a map. This allows features shown on the old maps to be located in the landscape as it looks today.

The above site contains maps of various scales.
Nichols, A History of the Antiquities of the County of Leicester, Volume 3 Part 2, pages 685-692 covers Bredon, pages 693-694 Bredon Priory & pages 695-704 the Priory register (much of this in Latin).
Cheers
