Good morning List,
I am researching my wife's forebears who came to Australia, sailing from Tobermory on 16 September 1839 aboard the Barque "GEORGE FYFE", Donald McDERMID [MacDIARMID]and Mary [Stewart] with 9 children.
The head of the family Donald McDIARMID[McDERMID] would have been born c1793. He married Mary STEWART abt 1815.
They were from the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.
Any 'smiggin' of help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
Bruce EDMONDS

I have a Jeannie or Jane McDermid (possibly AKA Jeannie Johnston/e or Jane Johnston/e McDermid) married in 1883 in NZ to Daniel McCallum. According to the info on their daughters birth record - Jeannie was 17 at the time of the marriage & Daniel was 26. They were 26 & 36 respectively in 1892 when their daughter Jeanie/Jane Johnstone McCallum was born.
Daniel was born in Argyll, Scotland & Jeanie McDermid was born in Waianiwa, near Invercargill, NZ (approx 1866). So far I dont know who her parents were. Still have to get their marriage cert.
Do you have any marriage of Johnstone to McDermid before 1866?
Thanks

Hello BurrowDigger,
I cannot identify your McDERMID line in my pages. McDERMID is my wife's maiden name -
You may care to research the undermentioned site, and add your line. It produces some surprising results

Good luck in your research

Burrow Digger,
I have a convoluted mixture of McDermid from Argyll and Johnston originally from Ayr, connecting through marriage with the Graham family from Bute.
My earliest McDermid is Neil, about 1762 who married Sarah Campbell. Their son Donald married Catherine Clark, and amongst their children is Barbara McDermid who married Hugh Graham, Hugh's parents were Alexander Graham and Janet Johnston. Alexander Graham's parents were John Graham and Sarah McDermid.
This line seems to double back on itself a bit! Any of that helpful at all?

I cant do anything about Jeanie until I know who her parents are. I'll need to wait for her birth registration. I have applied for it, but it will take a while. Will let you know if I make any connections. :)
Thanks.

Ok I finally have Jeannie McDermid's marriage cert - she was married in 1883 and born in 1866.
Her parents are listed as Duncan McDERMID and Margaret RONALD.
There is one IGI marriage (extracted record) for Duncan McDermid & Maggie Ronald. The dates fit very nicely.
Duncan MCDERMID
Spouse: Maggie RONALD
Marriage: 26 NOV 1861 Southend, Argyll, Scotland
And I found 2 possible birth records for Duncan in the IGI - both extracted records.
Duncan born 1826 Kilninver And Kilmelford, Argyll
son of Archibald McDermid & Bell Ferguson
or
Duncan born 1831 Kilninver And Kilmelford, Argyll
son of Neil McDermid & Christian Haggart.

Hi BD
Probably unlikely, but there is a marriage showing for a Duncan McDermid and a Margaret Ronald on IG:
DUNCAN MCDERMID Marriages: Spouse: MAGGIE RONALD
Marriage: 26 NOV 1861 Southend, Argyll, Scotland
Also, one child on IGI:
ANN MCDERMID Birth: 26 JAN 1863 Southend, Argyll, Scotland
Parents: Father: DUNCAN MCDERMID Mother: MARGARET RONALD
Regards.

So if Ann was born in Argyll in 1863 and Jeannie was born (supposedly) in Waianiwa, Southland, NZ in 1866 - then the family emigrated between those 2 dates.
I guess I better get Jeanie's birth (or death) registration to find out exactly where she was born. :)

And a huge Thank you to Ninatoo for passing her unwanted McDermid-Ronald marriage cert to me. :) This takes me one generation further back.
Now all I need to do is find out how and when all these Argyll ancestors came to NZ, and why. :)

Hello Members,
Could I humbly request your Duncan McDERMID line of ancestors/descendants?
McDERMID was also my wife's lineage. Her relatives came to Australia from Argyll. in 1839.
Maybe there is some link further back to the McDERMID/McDIARMID family in your Family Tree.
Sincerely
EDO

EDO!!!!!! Just found your post. Hope you still check back after all this time. I am a direct decendant of Donald and Mary McDermid [McDiarmid] who came to Australia on the George Fyfe in 1839. Their son Huge[Ewan] was my great great grandfather. I even have a photo of him. I have only recently started searching the net for info on my ancestors for fun, not seriously. I have a second cousin who has done the family tree and he arranged a family reunion at Wingham NSW about 13 yrs ago. Wingham is where Donald and Mary settled when they came here. The farm house is still there but other people live in it. I have found websites with a bit of info on them which I was quite shocked about as I did not know that my family's details were so readily available. The cousin who lives in Newcastle NSW would have loads of info. Reply if you still visit this site.

Hello Stardoe,
Well! Well! Well!
We would certainly like an 'image' of Ewen: My wife's side of the family came northwards in the mid to late 1800s. There are quite a few relatives in Queensland.
Can you give us details of the family that you have?
I will send you a PM [personal message] of my wife's side of the family.
Your cousin Tony is aware 'of our existence'.
Waiting to hear from you ........
Regards

Hello there edo - i hope I'm at the right place. My grandmothers (Thelma Palmer) mother was Mary Mcdermid -daughter of Archibald and Rachel (nee Martin) Mcdermid. Archibalds' parents were Donald and Mary (nee Stewart) Mcdermid who came on the George Fyfe in 1840 - so I guess somehow we are related. This is my daughters project for school but I fear I may become addicted. At this point I would like to know if you have any information regarding the reason that the family moved to Australia. Also would you have any online photos of people or the George Fyfe?
thankyou so muchfrom Charmaine -

I'm trying to track down my ancestors, unfortunately my family isn't very good with keeping records.
The furthest I can go back is my great grandfather, a William McDermid, that apparently grew up somewhere in Saskatchewan, Canada. That's only info my father has on him. My grandfather (Hugh McDermid) was born in, or around, Huntsville, Ontario, Canada and that's where my father lives now.
I'm desperately hoping that there may be some Canadians in here that might have some connection and can help me out! :)
Thank you,
- Sean McDermid

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to add my Stewart family connection to the Mcdiarmid family files here, as it may help (or hinder!) someone...
Jean Stewart b. 1793 "on Park Farm" Argyll.
She married James Mcdiarmid and had issue:
Donald b. 1824
Alexander b. 1825
James b. 1828
Archibald b. 1831
I have the entire Stewart family tree back to 1620 if anyone is connected to the "Park" Stewart's.
Regards,
Charles.

Hi to all the McDermid researches especially the one with relations in Wingham NSW.
Now for my longshot - do any of you have a John Thomas married to a Sarah McDermott (possible spelling error). This couple had a son also called John Thomas who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and came to Australia in the late 1800's. He eventually settled in Wingham NSW. These people are my great-grandparents and grand-father.
My delima is that I have not been able to find a birth registration for John Thomas jnr in Scotland or immigration records to Australia or a marriage registration for his parents anywhere. He is a complete mystery to me, even the year he was born is questionable as it changes with the age he gave on his marriage and for the registrations of his children's births. I might add that my father always said his dad had another family in Victoria from his first wife but he knew no names for any of them.
He is a major brick wall for me so any help will be greatly appreciated.
R.

G'day
Most of the McDERMID'S in the Wingham district were decsendants of Donald McDERMID who migrated to Australia with his family in 1840::
Donald and Mary (nee Stewart) McDermid arrived on the "George Fyfe" in 1840
Most family members maintained the McDERMID spelling in Australia. However, Birth records indicate that in Scotland some were registered as McDIARMID.
There were many variations of the name in Scotland.
This site could be of assistance to you -
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/m/mcdiarmid/
DNA testing could identify your particular family group.
Good luck in your research.

Hi sancti
I have a John McDermid married to Margaret McNaughton c1790.
Their son Archibald was born in Ardchattan c1790. He married Mary Tyson in Muckairn 1814. Archibald died in Kilmuir 1870
I have an Archibald John McDiarmid born 5 Dec 1791 at Ardchattan who married Mary Tyson on 4 Jan 1814. My records show his parents as James McDiarmid and Mary McConnel.
I wonder if he is the same person.
-
I have a death certificate giving his parents names as I posted
-
Thanks for the quick reply sancti.
I think the names and dates are too close for there not to be some sort of connection. My information came from a great aunt many, many years ago and should to be taken at face value.
I would be interested to see his death certificate because it may provide other useful information.

Hi , I have already posted a similar reply in the Invernesshire threads ~ sorry ,stupid mistake ::)
Anyway I am a McDiarmid/McDermid desendant .I have a census 1851 and if anyone has anymore info on this branch ,it would be amazing to me ! The 1851 census shows Lachlan McLaren head aged 42 or 47 ,his wife Catherine (unsure of her maiden name either McMillan or MacDonald ,i think )then their 4 children May 22,Hugh20,Lachlan10 and Christy 7 ~ Christy also known as Christina is my great great grandmother . Lachlan snr,his wife Catherine and their daughter Mary were all born in Appin .Hugh ,Lachlan jnr and Christy (Christina ) were all born Morvern . My great great grandmother Christy married Archibald McDiarmid/McDermid .They moved to Bonhill and became the parents to my great grandfather Hugh McDiarmid/McDermid .Hugh married an Irish girl Mary Doyle 1902 and they became the parents of my gran Chrissy (Christina ) McDiarmid/McDermid b 1904 . My grandmother Chrissy married my grandfather Andrew (Andy) Connelly in 1923 ,they had my Dad Hugh McDiarmid Connelly in 1943 ,I was born 1971 my middle name is Christina . Any info on the McLaren or McDiarmid branches from Appin / Morvern would be most welcome and lovely to learn about . Thanks X

I am a descendant of MacDermids from Cumbuslang Lanarkshire . Duncan b1830 and Agnes nee McFarlane
their3rd son Malcom Mcdermid married Jeannie nee Kyle
they had 10 children including my grandfather Thomas Macdermid b1903
grandad's brother Andrew b1891 also married Elizabeth nee Macdiarmid so there is a connection to another branch of a variant spelling .
I wonder if anyone else is connected to these branches
-
Perhaps I can help
Haven't got far with my family research. My 2nd great grandfather was Ewen (Hugh) Macdiarmid born 29/7/1827 in Ardnamurchan Argyll Scotland. His father Donald was 33 and his mother Mary Stewart was 34. Donald Mcdermid died on 19th October 1910 at Palmers Island Clarence River NSW Australia.
