Title: George Lindsay Neilson b.1874 d?1947 ***COMPLETED***
Post by: Chiad Fhear on Thursday 18 June 20 11:28 BST (UK)
Hi there RootsChatters

A Granduncle of mine, George Lindsay Neilson, was born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland on 23 December 1874 son of Dr James Neilson (1840-1886) and Marjory Reekie (1837-1918).

I have this much information for him:
1881 Census Residing at High Street, Blairgowrie, Perthshire - Scholar
1891 Census Residing at High Street, Blairgowrie, Perthshire - a grocer's assistant

There is no record, that I can find, of George in the 1901 Census or Registers of Death Registers in Scotland, however, a 90-year-old 2nd cousin, descended from his oldest brother Alexander recalls one of the "Neilson boys" emigrating and possibly dying in South Africa.  She couldn't recall his name.

I have noted a 1947 death on Ancestry for a George Lindsay Neilson in Transvaal Province, South Africa and wonder if this could be the connection?

I'm hoping someone out there can help me here.

Stay Safe and best regards

Thanks BumbleB

Had a look through all of the headings but can't find anything to confirm it's "my" George.

Appreciate your response nevertheless.

The following 1947 probate file should clarify George's background:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS3W-46WQ
(NB ignore the index at the bottom of the page as it seems that the transcription is a bit funny)

Update: His daughter seems to have grandmother's name as her second name ....

Thanks TreeSpirit

Great find. Jessie and Marjory just complete the demolishing of George's wall for me.

I've managed to trace his brother Thomas to South Africa as well so bonus points all round this morning!

Stay safe
