Hi, I was just wondering if someone could help me with some research on some relatives.
My ancestor, Thomas Ignatius Breaden, was born on Jan 5th 1863 in Wicklow, Ireland and baptised on 11 Jan that year. His brother Patrick Lorenzo Breaden was born Nov 11th 1864 and baptised on the 29th. Their parents were Thomas and either Anastasia or Mary Ann Breaden (nee Gorman) (the first name differs on some records). Thomas Sr was a Policeman/Constable - possibly part of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). The brothers, Thomas and Patrick immigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1883. If anyone is able to find the marriage, birth/baptism or death records of Thomas (Sr) and Anastasia/Mary Ann it would be much appreciated. Also, if there are any RIC records you can find they would be really great too. They are listed as living at Crehelp, Dunlavin, Wicklow on Thomas' baptism certificate.
Thanks, Michael :)

The informant in both cases was their daughter, K. Breaden.
Note also that Patrick Lorenzo Breaden was born on the 28th November 1864.

How do the ranks work in the RIC?
Do you start as a Sub Constable and than Constable?

Indeed you do, Sinann
Sub-Constable 2nd class -> Sub-Constable 1st class -> Sub-Constable
Then
Acting Constable -> Constable
Then
Acting Sergeant -> Sergeant

Thanks so Sub would be early in his career which makes sense for the births of the children.
This family looks worth investigating further.

Is it the same Thomas married twice?
Need to find a marriage for Thomas and Mary Ann Dowling.
Think I have it 1873 between birth of Mary 1866 and James 1874

Thomas Braydon widowed Constable to Mary Doolin which fits better with the surname on James' birth.

You can search on both Ancestry and FindMyPast under the database:
‘Ireland, Royal Irish Constabulary Service Records 1816-1922’ for a record of Thomas Breaden. Both of these sites are subscription-based.

Thanks Kiltaglassan, Sinann, dathai - I never would have expected any of what you've found, it is much appreciated. I managed to find George Breaden's death record (1951), and potentially Catherine's in 1962. I couldn't find anything on Eugene and James, or a more definite record of Catherine's death, but if you are able to look too maybe something will come up. Haven't looked very far into it, but the marriage/death of Catherine's children and possibly births of grandchildren would also be very helpful.
Thanks again!
Michael :)

There is a Thomas Breaden in Drumkeeran Black in Co Cavan in Griffith's Valuation. Print date 1857
Drumkeeran Black is in the parish of Killeshandra
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0838
Registration district is Bawnboy.
It may also be helpful to note there is an Eliza Breaden as witness on the marriage to MaryAnn, she may be a sister visiting from Cavan to look after the children after their mother died.
