Hi,
Towyn died in 1974. His wife, Mary Yarmiy Jones' obit is in the Brandon Sun, Oct 6 1979. It says that Mary, the widow of the late Towyn Jones, formerly of 357-16th Street, Brandon, and lately of 110 Sherburn St, Winnipeg, died in Winnipeg on Sept 28 1979. She was predeceased by her husband Towyn Jones in 1974. She is survived by her son G, daughter in law P, and 2 grandchildren D and S, all of Winnipeg. Also survived by one brother, Jack Yarmiy of Winnipeg, and 5 sisters: Dora Benedicson of Calgary; Annie McLarnon of St. Eustache, Quebec; Sene Bedard of Victoriaville, Quebec; Hazel Martin of Winnipeg and Helen Bowen of Montreal, Quebec. Interment Brandon Cemetery.

Towyn's obit is in the Brandon Sun on Nov 22 1974. It says he was 62 and had been a member of the Sun's composing room staff for 31 years. He died early "this morning" (would be the 22nd). He is survived by his wife Mary and son G, 27 of Winnipeg. He was "deaf and mute"...born in Wales in 1912, he attended a special school there for "the deaf and mute" before he came to Canada. In Canada, he attended a special school in Tuxedo for 6 years. When the Sun converted to offset printing in 1972, he trained in how to do it. His foreman said that as a printer, he was second to none. He was active in organizations for the deaf, he was an avid bowler and a member of the St. David's society. He was the senior most member of the International Typographical Union, local 700.

Thanks RunKitty,
For the additional information, I must check the cemetery information again.

You are welcome :)
I think Dorothy's maiden name was Lamb. There is a short note in the Macgregor Herald (Dec 9 1943) saying that a shower was held for Mrs Iolo Jones (nee Dorothy Lamb)
Also from 1945 - Petty Officer Iolo Jones of the R.C.N.V.R. is spending a furlough with Mrs Jones at the home of Mr and Mrs T D Lamb.

There is an obit for Dwynwen E Jones in the Brandon Sun, April 15 1985. It says she died in Niagara on April 12. Wife of Harold. Mother of R W of Winnipeg, H W of Niagara Falls and the late Gwyn Williams. Sister of Iolo (Bill) Jones of Niagara Falls, Mrs Sophie McFaddin of Fonthill Ontario and Islwyn Jones of Brandon. Grandmother of 5 named people. Great grandmother of one named child. Interment Lundy's Lane Cemetery.

Many Thanks RunKitty,
Towyn son was Gwyn Williams Jones 1947-2016.

Obituary for William Evans McFadden in the Brandon Sun, July 22, 1978. Looks like he was the second husband of Sophie Jones. Obit says that William died June 22 in Font Hill, Ontario, in his 71st year. He was born at Broadview Farm, Rivers, Manitoba on April 26 1908. In 1934, he married Jessie Wotton. They had 2 sons, 1 daughter and 5 grandchildren. Jessie died in 1962. In 1966, he married Sophie (Jones) McDonald, who survives him. He is also survived by step son D McDonald of Niagara Falls, Ontario. Also 2 brothers Chester of Rivers and Earl of Rhodesia, and one sister Alice Jenner of Regina.

Great that you have so many leads :) :)
Yes - Towyn's son was Gwyn. I wasn't sure if he was still living, so I only posted his initial.

Looks like this was a very musical family :). I keep finding articles about them singing etc. Especially Sophie Jones MacDonald - she sang and played both the piano and organ.

Many Thanks again Runkitty,
That works fine.
And an Australian Branch where I am located.
My father was a Teacher of the Deaf and I born just outside the only Deaf Grammar School in the UK.
Have you come across an obituary for Sophie? or a date for her mother Sophia?
Kind Regards

Very interesting!!
Unfortunately, I haven't found an obit/death date for either Sophie or Sophia. I found several articles about the very musical Sophie Jones MacDonald - well into the 1950s in Manitoba. I don't know her first husband's name or where/when he died.
RK
-
Short article about Sophie Jones MacDonald McFadden - from Brandon Sun, Dec 2 1966. It lists some of her many musical accomplishments.

Thank you RunKitty

Found this which helps answer whose Sophie son was.
From Brandon Sun 25th Sept 1963
-
Found the year books for Brandon College, Manitoba 1951 and 1953 and the same picture of Mrs Sophie MacDonald appears.

Lovely photo :)

Hiya,
Latest I have seen is 1939 and still named Miss Sophie Jones, but in 1948 its Mrs Sophie MacDonald.
When did she marry and to whom where?
1976 is the last date i have seen as Mrs Sophie MacDonald.
Any help is most welcome and I thank you in advance.
Kind Regards

Hi,
Sophie Jones's second husband's obit (see reply 7), says that he married Sophie Jones MacDonald in 1966. From then on, she went by the name Sophie McFadden. I don't know when Sophie married Mr MacDonald.
RK
-
I can see some articles about her as Sophie O Jones in 1941. Certainly her....providing music for St. David's Day celebrations. (also named on William McFadden's tombstone as Sophie O Jones)
I can also see her from 1948 as Sophie MacDonald.
Marriage to Mr MacDonald between 1941 and 1948
Marriage to William Evans McFadden in 1966
1985, she is called Mrs Sophie McFaddin in sister Dwynwen's obituary. Only her surviving 3 siblings are mentioned. Sophie is still alive in 1985... and living in Font Hill, Ontario.

Found the marriage notice for Dorothy Mae Lamb, second daughter of Mr and Mrs T D Lamb of Macgregor Manitoba to Leading Stoker Iolo Jones, youngest son of Mr and Mrs W S Jones of Brandon. Marriage took place on Oct 9 1943. (Winnipeg Free Press Oct 16 1943).
This confirms that Dorothy who married Iolo was Dorothy Lamb. I suspected this to be true (see my earlier post - reply #4), but it is nice to be sure
Also in this marriage notice - it says that Mr C Jones, brother of the bridegroom attended him. AND...during the signing of the register, Mrs S. J. MacDonald sang.
I expect that the above is Sophie Jones MacDonald. This narrows the search range for her marriage to Mr MacDonald....between early 1941 and October of 1943.

Hi RunKitty,
I realised later 1976 was wrong as you had previously mentioned her second marriage was in 1966,
I search all through Canadian state marriage records and nothing was found
Thanks once again.
Kind Regards

I'm not seeing anything either. Marriages from the 1940s are not available on the Manitoba Vital Stats site yet. Marriages more recent than 80 years ago are not public information. However, since we have narrowed the marriage year to between 1941 and 1943, the information will be available in a couple of years.
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
Just a thought...have you tried Minnesota? Maybe she was married somewhere other than Manitoba?
I have been wondering if Mr MacDonald died in the War?

Hi RunKitty,
I found a source to the Flinonian Yearbook, 1964-1965 so the Year book date 1965 is the last one with a picture of staff member S Macdonald, but also H Macdonald is the last time he appears. Is he the husband?
Added 1961 year book picture this is the first with S MacDonald, I found H Macdonald appear much earlier.
Kind Regards

Hi there,
My name is Meghan (I am married now but my maiden name is Jones). My brother and I came across your post, albeit a bit later than posted, however we were quite intrigued as this refers to our family, which we have been quite interested in finding more information on as the years pass. You have quite a bit of good new info for us, and we are curious to know how all the names link up. I’m sure, of course we would have some ways to fill in gaps for you as well. Many of our family members resided in Brandon as you have noted in your posts, including our grandparents. I am new to rootschat, and hope this gets to you. Take care,
Meghan

I am not sure if you can send private message?
Kind Regards

Both my brother and I have access to this email.
Take care,
Meghan

Afternoon all. Have just found this thread re the Jones family in Canada. My partner is a Jones, the common ancestors being William & Mariah back in Briton Ferry. It looks as though another sister to William Samuel Jones also moved to Canada, possibly Brandon. She was Mary Charlotte Jones, born 1879 who married John Gomer DAVIES. They look to have sailed for Canada in 1913 and revisited Briton Ferry in 1937.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the information, always good to be sent another link.
