Title: Universal Carrier
Post by: LenVin on Tuesday 09 June 20 16:26 BST (UK)
This photo is of Universal carriers at the Military sidings at Farnborough Hants railway station. The vehicles appear to have civilian registration plates. The one in the front was issued in 1952 to a Morris Oxford. Are these numbers specific to regiment or manufactures production.

From 1921 to 1948 all British military vehicles were given civilian registrations beginning with a Middlesex area code (RMVY in this case), as well as a military registration.

Thank you Shaun. Is it possible to date this photo and is that registration also for the (RMY) series

The photo is mid to late 1930's.

Re the registration, you are right it is RMY, not RMV. It still fits as a Middlesex code as used by military vehicles at that time.
