Whilst chatting to some older members of my family a few questions came up as they told the tales of the shops their ancesters used to visit around the years of -
1879 - 1940
in north shields.
So can i ask if anyone can help with how i can find out what these shops were called as i would love to be able to find out more info on them maybe even find an old picture for my elders. The library is closed so that option cannot be followed.
1. There was a confectionary shop opposite the Railway Station at North Shields.
2. a butcher's shop in Charlotte Street north shields
Thankyou x

try Flickr Discover North Tyneside collection ,I have seen a similar request on ARNE with names of the family

as in opposite the station are you talking Nile Street where Hoults is or Railway Terrace or Street where one side obviously was demolished years ago ,that's a huge date range 1879 to 1940

an older friend of mine remembers a ornament shop called Mamies a opticians perhaps Richardsons and a sweetie shop on the corner of Nile and Railway but she can't be precise

Just wondering .. might the butcher ancestor have been this one? I have recently added this photo to Find A Grave re this man who was a North Shields Pork butcher.

Jacob S. Backer might not be a relevant ancestor but I thought I would mention just in case.
If you are not local I could check the biographies folders for the ancestors later on when the library reopens if you remind me again when this situation improves.
Added: Sorry - Jacob seems to have died 1859.
