Hi
I wonder if you amazing people can help me solve a little mystery which I am at a loss how to do!
William Sherret born in 1823(possibly 1822?) in Fettercairn. Parents William Sherret and Isobella Stephen who on the 1841 census lived in Crechiburn, Fettercairn & by 1851 William (the father) was a farmer of 90 acres employing 4 labourers of Mains of Glenfarquhor, Fordoun.
William the son by 1841 wasn't living with his family and I suspect was a Mariner. In 1849 he married Mary Ann Jones in Whitechapel, London quite a way away from his original home! On the 1851 census Mary Ann was living with her in-laws so I believe William was at sea at the time. The next mention of William was in 1858 in an obituary stating that he died in Auckland, New Zealand on the 5th August of that year. It states he was the Captain of the Barque Queen at that time.
I know that barque is another term for clipper but I haven't found any mention of Barque Queen or any incident regarding William Sherret and his death. Also wondered what he was taking to New Zealand at the time. Was Mary Ann with him? Did they settle in New Zealand?
Can anyone tell me anything about William's career? Was he a captain and what happened in 1858? Also what happened to Mary Ann - her father was Edward Jones and on the marriage certificate I cannot be certain if he was a Lawyer or Sawyer?
Many thanks

Hi
Thank you so much for all the information you have sent. It has been fascinating to read all the newspaper articles which draw a picture of the life and death of William Sherret, his wife and her consequent 2nd husband! Wow!!! All of this information began with a census showing Mary Ann living with her in-laws and registered as the wife of a mariner!
My apologies for taking a while to send you my thanks. I know how hard it is to find information as I have been searching for info regarding my Grandfather for years. The Sherret's are a part of my husband's family tree. He was amazed!
Thanks again.
