I have a person name Elizabeth Diggory or Gregory . b 1833 Drayton Shropshire. she married in Burslem 1862 to John Cooper( b 1831 Burslem ). looking at the census they had children before their marriage however my dilemma is they had a daughter Alice who is my 3x grandmother and on the birth certificate it says Elizabeth Diggory . The census address is shown to be correct as it is where both sides of my families were born and grew up in that area. Can anyone shine a light on this and is it possible that such a big mistake could be made. i have been trying to work this out for a long time i would fresh eyes to look at it for me. Many Thanks Glenys

Hello Glenys, I'm not quite sure what the problem is?
Alice COOPER seems to be registered Sep qtr 1867 at Wolstanton (6b/127) mmn DIGGORY, and appears in the 1871 and 1881 censuses as Alice. Or have I misunderstood?

Hi Maddy. what i am trying to establish is Elizabeth (Mother to Alice) actual surname Gregory or Diggory as it states on Alice' s birth certificate that I am in possession of yet it is Gregory on the census and marriage certificate of Elizabeth when she married to John Cooper in 1862. is there anyway to establish it at all. which is correct ??

What children do have for this couple....before marriage, 1862, and after.......
Using GRO birth records you can see how mother's maiden name is recorded.
I suspect that Elizabeth. GREGORY and DIGGORY are the same name.....transcription variations.

The marriage entry clearly states Gregory, although she makes her mark rather than signs the register. Father named as John Gregory, Potter.

Sorry, been without internet for a few days ...
Children have various mother's maiden name, so yes, I see your confusion!
Emma COOPER - 1869 -mmn GREGORY
Alice COOPER - 1867 - mmn DIGGORY
Ann COOPER - 1865 - mmn DEGGORY
James Cooper GREGORY - 1861
Elizabeth GREGORY - 1859
Mary Ann GREGORY - 1857
I think as the marriage has GREGORY, it sounds like this is correct. Pronunciation and spelling may account for the variations.
