Title: United Presbyterian Minister
Post by: Ross996 on Sunday 17 May 20 17:46 BST (UK)
Hi
I have a person who was mentioned in a marriage certificate as being a United Presbyterian Minister.
Is there any way I can find more information about this. When and where he was ordained and possibly where he served as a minister. His name was James Miller and I have a birth year of 1800. His son Henry was born in Bristol so there are links to the SW of England, but that is all I have.
Thanks
Ross

Have you found him on any census entry showing his birthplace?

Who did he marry - where and when

When was Henry born?  There is an 1851 entry for Henry Miller 28 and George Miller 23 - both carpenters and both b Bristol

Carole,
James married a Charlotte Tapley/ Taplie and Henry was born around 1832 in Bristol. Henry's marriage cert states clearly his dad was a U P minister.

Have you found Henry on the 1841 census?

Carole,
Cannot find Henry in 1841 census, but on Henry's death cert, James is entered as a soldier, so perhaps an army Chaplain at some point. I would have thought that there would be a list of ordained ministers somewhere. James and Charlotte are potentially still alive in 1860, when Henry got married as they are not marked "deceased" on the certificate.

The United Presbyterian Church (1847–1900) was a Scottish Presbyterian denomination.

Although it was Scottish Presbyterian denomination they had churches in England.
The New Building of the The United Presbyterian Church , St. James's Parade, Bristol.  was opened for Public Worship On Wednesday September 7th 1859. Western Daily Press - Bristol.

There must be a list of ministers somewhere along the lines of those for C of E clergy.

How do you know James married Charlotte Tapley?

Did Henry marry Agnes Graham in Ayrshire in 1860?  Only Scottish marriage/death certs have both parents names and mothers maiden name

If not - who did he marry?  There is an 1871 for a Henry Miller b 1831 Bristol - wife Margaret - no children - living in Chelsea

If James & Charlotte were still alive - have you found them on the 1851 census?  Where is Henry in 1851?

He may have started off as a minister in the Church of Scotland then at the Disruption joined the Free Church of Scotland, there are also Free Presbyterians & United Presbyterians. First try the,  Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, of the Church of Scotland plus the Free Churches lists.

Carole, Thank you. Yes he did marry Agnes Graham in 1860, that's where I got his parents names, but I cant find them on the 1851 census or 1861.
Skoosh,  yes it makes sense that he could have been ordained into the CoS before 1847. I will check Fasti.
Thank you both for your assistance
