				Hi All,

I am looking for any trace of my great-aunt's child. I came by this information through an article in Trove and it has me stumped. The article reads as follows:

 FALSE REGISTRATION OF BIRTH.
A charge against Wm. S. Spillane, grain broker, of making a false statement in registering the
birth of his daughter's illegitimate child was investigated at the St. Kilda police, court on Friday. Spillane pleaded guilty. Considerable public interest was exhibited in the prosecution, the accused being the father of a youth of eighteen years, who, after being shockingly neglected, ran away with the intention of killing himself, but fortunately fell Into the hands of the police. The youth is now -In the care of the Christion Brothers at Geelong,
Eileen M, . Spillane, a young girl wearing A short dress, said she gave birth to a illegitimate. child at the residence of Nurse Arscott, Inkerman St., on 19th June, 1906. Her father took
her to the place, and afterwards went with her to Broadmeadows, where the child was given over to the Foundling Hospital authorities. Witness went under the name of Moon at Nurse Arscott's. Nurse Arscott said that in May last year accused introduced himself to her as .Mr. Moon, and arranged for the accommodation of his daughter. Blanch Manly, registrar of births, deaths and marriages, St. Kida, stated that on 22nd June a child was registered in the name of Dorothy Maloney by a man who gave the name, of Wm. Maloney, and signed the register as the father. Before registering witness read the caution that any. false statement would be perjury.
Detective Coonan deposed to accused having on 12th inst. admitted registering his daughter's child in the name of Dorothy Moloney, so that the family should not he disgraced. Witness reminded him that, he made a. false. registration, and lie answered, "I know I did." He then stated that he did not know the name of the father of the child. Until-. Detective Sainslmry told him, accused was not aware that- the child was dead.
 Accused. was committed for trial

Now, I have searched Vic BDM, plus everywhere else I can think of chasing info in this article but cannot seem to find anything at all.

As you can see from the first paragraph, this was not the first time that year that this family was under scrutiny (and there's more...but that is not for today).

Can't find a birth or a death, in any combination of names.

If anyone can suggest anything at all I can try, I would be most grateful.

 Cheers,
 Julie

Another article on TROVE, as well as the one already quoted,  says that the child died:
...the child was registered by Spillane in the name of Dorothy Moloney. Spillane stated that the father resided at the Victoria Coffee Palace. The child's mother remained with the nurse, (Mrs. Ashworth, registered nurse of Inkerman Street, St. Kilda) until 23rd August, and went to St. Joseph's Foundling Home at Broadmeadows, where the baby subsequently died.

I cant see a suitable death though.  I wonder what happened to the mother of the baby.  So sad.

 Judith

Edit to add - From an on-line tree (haven't checked any of the information) I see her with 2 marriages and death noted as 1970, still in Victoria

This other article on the same subject confirms previous information given above  and shows a lenient inclination towards Wm SPLILLANE at this level of the court system.

				Thanks All!

I got the same in results. She apparently married the twice (Richard Duncan Neil AVERY and Jonathan Kent, although somewhere I have the name Eric Bosher as well). She died on 5 July 1980 so was abt 90 when went.

William, the father, was a very lucky man in that he didn't spend much time in gaol. As well as the son running away after being neglected, and the daughter pregnant at 16, he was then prosecuted for receiving stolen goods and disposing of same. The last being after he coerced his second eldest eldest (Thomas my grandfather) into stealing 5, or thereabouts, gramophones from his place of employment.

I can see that this may be one of those unsolvables, however, I will try the archives for the Foundling Hospital at Broadmeadows and see if I have any joy.

 Thanks again!

 Cheers,
 Julie

				Me again,

I can't thank you all enough for these leads. I've been out of the action for a few years now (you know how life can get in the way!) and I was having trouble getting started. Thanks for the kick start. I'm really grateful.

Eileen was always a bit of a mystery. I was only 8 when my grandfather died (her older brother) so I had no idea about anything really. I only found out anything (and it was only hints at that) at all when my mother passed and I inherited all her papers and photos.

I guess what I'm trying to say is she's seems like a good one with which to restart my research.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Information from E roll is available which probably, but not definitely, relates to Eileen Marie/Mary.

Happy to type it up for you if you wish, but I see no further details for a death record for little baby Dorothy, which was your original line of inquiry.

 Sue

				Hi Sue,

Thank you, I would most be grateful if you would type it up - as long as it's not too much trouble.

As for young Dorothy, I think I will try and contact the archives for the Foundling Hospital which wa run by the SSOJ. The nuns usually have a good handle with the archives of their various institutions so I might be lucky.

Thanks again for your help with this.

 Cheers,
 Julie
