My Father was born in a Pub in Windsor Berkshire but, because it was in 1922 I am not able to find it in any Census.
I really want to know who owned the Pub and the names of any lodgers/workers living there. It may be that my Grandad worked there, I don't know.
The Pub in question, in case any one knows of it, was the Man of Kent which sat at the end of Green Lane in Windsor unto about the early 1960's when it was demolished.
I would be interested if there is a Web site or some organisation etc, that has records.
Obviousely I can't go to the Council Offices at this time be will, when possible.
Thanks

There are several pub history websites which will tell you the history of the property, however the only record that comes to mind where it will give occupants would be the 1939 register

The Electoral Roll is another possibility.

Thanks for the info BubbleB and iluleah I will take a look.
-
Shaun, thanks for the tip but I am not sure which one to use.
The problem I have is that I know who owned the Pub from the 1911 Census but as my Dad was born there in 1922 the Census for then is not yet available.
-
Have you looked for your grandfather in the 1920's electoral rolls?
-
No, how do I get into the rolls?
-
Ancestry has Berkshire, England, Electoral Registers, 1840-1965
-
The Windsor and Eton Express 03 June 1911 has the transfer of the "Man of Kent" from George Drury to Ernest Henry Orchard.

WOW!! Thanks Stan, I will look him up and see if he was still there in 1922 and who was lodging there with him.
-
The Middlesex Chronicle 17 June 1939 has the transfer of "The Shears" Sunbury to Thomas David Briars of "The Man of Kent" Clewer.

Ok, thanks. What I am really looking for is who was resident at the Pub in 1922.
My Dad was born there but his Dad was not the Landlord so I am guessing he was either working at the Pub or just lodging there but I can not find anyway of getting the info and the Census Records are still not available.

Have you tried looking for your gg-father in the services (1939)?

Hi Caribu, thanks for the info, which I already have. The problem is that this Ottley is NOT the one on my Grandads marriage certificate!!! that's where I have the problem as he only married a few months earlier!!!
-
Hi
Did you sort out your father's birthcert?
My theory is that George W Rolfe (senior) married Harriet Mary Ottley
which was her name from her first marriage ( to Herbert Edward Ottley ).
Her maiden name being GODFREY [ ????? ]
Marriage 1908 June Windsor 2c 945 Harriet Mary GODFREY / Herbert Edward OTTLEY Harriet Mary GODFREY born 1885 June Easthampstead 2c 414
Please put me out of misery and let me know? :D
Cheers

Hi, sorry I have not been back before.
My Granddad was George William Rutter Rolfe and he married Harriet Sabrina Ottley in 1922 at The Parish church Clewer, Windsor.
she was a Widow and her Farthers name was James McGowan!!
I think Her Mothers name was Caroline so I am now beginning
to think that my Father was illegitimate and his Mother was my Grandads Wife's mother, in other words he had an affair with her!!!
I don't know what to think as he was married 5th Oct 1922 and my Dad was born 17th Dec. 1922!!!
What do you make of it

Hi
If you tell us what you have then we may get closer and save a lot of repeated research?
There is some info that I haven't posted because I have no idea whether it is relevant.
Love to help!

Hi Ray, sorry but been busy and forgot all about your reply.
This is the situation I am in at the moment.
1. My Grandad (George William Rutter Rolfe) married a Harriet Sabrina Ottley in Oct 1922 at Clewer Parish Church near Windsor Berks.
2 In December 1922 my Dad (George William Rutter Rolfe)was born, his Mothers name on his Birth Cert. was Caroline Rebecca Rolfe (Ne. Ottley).
3. Harriet had her Father as a James McGowan on the marriage Cert. and that she was a Widow!!.
I can find no link between them or record of her marrying to get the surname Ottley.
What I don't understand is how did Caroline become a Rolfe!! I can find no Records of her.
I have found some possibility that James McGowan came from Ireland.
Hope this is clear and thanks if you are able to help.
