I'm looking for date of birth, death, wife, children, etc of Owen LEWIS.
Owen (occupation, gardener) had a son, George LEWIS, born in 1824 at Ludlow. This would mean that Owen was born around 1800.
George Lewis married Mary Ann Lawrence in 1852 at Bethnal Green, Middlesex and the family tree from then onward is well known.
However, can't find anything about his father, Owen, or Owen's wife, or other children.
Any help would be much appreciated! thanks

Hello David
Looking at family trees on Anc the couple emigrated to Aud pre the 1861 census. Have you found them on the 1851 census and where does a birthplace of Ludlow come from??
Thanks
Kay

The on-line tree suggests place of birth as Headington, Oxfordshire (or Shropshire?)
Have just had a closer look at the details of the tree. Has daughter born in Australia in 1860 and son born in England in 1860. All rather suspect.
Family supposedly in Durham in 1861.

Yes - George Lewis on his marriage cert is listed as a Tailor but the George Lewis in Darlington in1861 appears to be an Iron Puddler??

Hi Kay and Brentor boy,
George Lewis married in 1852 and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia on 5 Nov 1856 with his wife and three children, Emma Jane, William Owen and Frederick. A further three children were born in Australia.
Yes, he's a tailor on his 1852 marriage certificate. On Frederick's 1855 birth cert he's a barman. George died in Adelaide, Australia on 24 Oct 1865, age 41. He was a labourer and his family promptly ended up in the Destitute Asylum. He didn't return to England at any stage.
George's marriage certificate shows his father as Owen Lewis, gardener.
I've a family history book 'The family of George Lewis and Mary Anne Lawrence' by Pam Flynn (nee Lewis), 2001. Pam was a family history enthusiast and suggests that Owen was born in Ludlow but unfortunately doesn't provide further information. I have found a death of an Owen Lewis in Dec 1841.
So Owen is currently a bit of a mystery.

Looks lije this was the Owen who died in 1841 GRO Death Index but at 80 he looks rather old to be George's father
OWEN LEWIS Age 80

Cant find George in 1851 but appears to be him in 1841;
George LEWIS, 15, Tailor, not born in County
Living in St Anne Soho

Thanks Kay, I didn't have the age of Owen Lewis, and yes, 80 would be too old. In that case I doubt that he is George Lewis' father.
I'm starting to wonder if my family history is wrong about Shropshire. There is another George Lewis with wife Mary A, who seem to have been in Shropshire, but the father definitely isn't Owen.

Thanks Trish, that certainly looks like George Lewis in Soho in 1841. I've added that to my tree.
